I was chatting by e-mail with the CEO of AnimEigo. I asked him a what if question if Macross 7 (TV, encore, movie and OVA) were licensed, what would it require, or would it be too expensive.
He said that there are music rights problems (unassociated with the other legal issues between studios about who owns Macross) associated with it, and thus if licensed would require 100% new songs and music. Which is why nobody will license it.
Anyone have more on this issue?

Considering what a prominent role music played in that series I wouldn't be suprised if they got some big acts to make music for it.

It would probably be too expensive for AnimEigo to license, but ADV, Bandai or Geneon could afford it.

Macross 7 is an awful series anyway so its not a shame that it hasn't been licensed.

I'll admit Macross 7 will only appeal to people who can defend the Star Wars prequels, but I guess if you're a Macross completist, and could endure Southern Cross and Mospeada, there's nothing wrong with seeing it once...

What's wrong with the Star Wars prequels? Actually, I am one of those Macross completists who would love to have Macross 7 even though it is kind of goofy.

Because of a horribly vauge description that compared Macross 7 to Macross Plus, I went into it with huge expectations only to be crushed by its lameness. I can't recommend it to any Macross fans out there.

I wouldn't say that.... I would say, though, that any Macross fans (people who collect M+, MII, Flashback, etc) should see this at least once and make up their own minds. I rather enjoyed it, but then, I like the music. The premise is a bit silly, though, admittedly....
The casual fan should skip it, but if you find yourself spending the cash on purchasing the various series, then you should check it out.

Personally the music only added to how awful I thought it was.

Macross 7 isn't that bad. It was a bit of a chore to watch for the first half of the series, but I thought it picked up well in the second half. Mylene was really irritating and Basara always seemed like he was just being difficult for the sake of being difficult, so they were aggravating at times, but on the whole I thought it was a decent show. Not on par with Macross, perhaps, but certainly not bad...still better than Macross II.

Not really. The music just because a huge hit in Japan, and the owners of the music are entirely seperate from the owners of the anime. The figure I was given was "As much as licensing the animation". In other words, consider how many people hate it, NOT worth it.

Part of the problem was that 7 was released during the same time as Mac Plus. Since they were so different shows it was easy to side with one or the other. This reminds me of when Gundam F91 and 0083 were released at the same time. Sure F91 was less than great, but I felt it was really panned because 0083 was so good.

If memory serves at a few J theaters you got the first LD of 0083 if you saw F91
