^^true statement ^^ SO here it is Is there an anime, episode of an anime type of or part of anime that is effectively uplifting and anti-depressive for you? In my experience nothing beats the ending theme of spice and wolf, I don't care how many of my extremely sparse cool points I lose for expressing this opinion but it just makes me smile every time I hear that adorable engrish! If I had a bad day i will que up that song and play me some robot unicorn attack and everything is just great! |

Definitely one of my favorites -- way cute. I have pulled it off the shelf just to listen to the song. I also have a weakness for the opening of Hand Maid May that way. Also I have found the opening to Please Twins -- especially with the monologue that starts Episode 4 -- to be quite uplifting. It really makes you want to be part of the story. Also fantastic is the closing theme to either Oh My Goddess or Ah My Goddess (I forget which, but it has the bluegrass/swing beat to it). And, of course, who can do without the dance number that closes out Harhui? I think they have the full animation remix of that as one of the extras on the DVDs. And last but not least, the cheerleading number in Lucky Star. Anime has some great music in it -- nothing like it here in the U.S. |

well i wouldn't agree with that bit :\ specially since Japanese stuff is just a verity of western music which is almost always pioneered in U.S. or England (not to discredit it at all its just i think you can't dis U.S. music industry either) But I digress you reminded me of haruhi suzumiya and that cultural festival and the home movie episodes are both unavoidably upbeat |

The island episodes of Haruhi however really P-ed ME O!
My own sure-fire anti-depressives for when I'm feeling down have always been Kiki's Delivery Service and Mahou Tsukai Tai! the OVA. Whisper of the Heart should be up there, since it's a very happy film, and one of my favourites. But it needs to be used with caution: because it's about working hard and realizing your dreams, I sometimes need to avoid it, or I'll just end up feeling like a slacker and a loser. Urusei Yatsura, double-digit volume.
(Preferably up past the twenties, by the time we got the sentimental Kazuo Yamazaki episodes.) Failing that, anything Ranma S2-4. Rumiko may have been insufferably snotty in person, but she was the Japanese Preston Sturges of her time. |

When I'm in a bad mood I used to tend to go for motivating stuff (Black Lagoon, Gurren Lagann, or FLCL; usually with the audio replaced with running cadance). Having two daughters is changing that part of me very quickly, now when I'm pissed I turn on Tweeny Witches and Jack Johnson.

Anti-depressive anime hm... I feel like pretty much any slice of life / comedy would do the trick, but that's me. I think any "moe" show should probably lift your spirits a bit also. Here are some shows that come to mind for anti-depression. Lucky Star - as mentioned before. Although the first three episodes in my opinion were a bit too Seinfeld for me, the rest of it was rather cute, funny , and relaxing to watch. Bright colors, cutesy voices, etc etc. Aria the Animation and so forth - Granted i've only seen one episode of this, but given the feel I got and from what I've heard this is a very mellow and relaxing show to zone out to. School Rumble - a very silly show filled with a large cast. Lots of fun, some interesting gags but not over the top too much like Pani Poni or Arakawa Under the Bridge. Full of attractive girls, romance interests, and pretty much steers clear or anything too depressing spoiler[minus the last ova I guess o.o? ] K-ON! - Funny, you'd think that this show would go on the depressing list, for why you're watching it... I kid I kid. Extremely happy, cheerful , airy, full of girls doing cutesy stuff boarderlinging absolutely nothing. |

Skip Beat! All of it. I have never laughed so much as during this one series. Really great when Im in a bad mood, the world quickly becomes a better place to be in.
Then Whisper of the Heart, a few random spisodes of Strawberry Eggs and the first ep of Golden Boy always manage to cheer me up. And although it is not anime as such, the opening song to House of Five Leaves gives me such a positive attitide. It became my feel-good song when I first heard it, I now usually start my day with it. |

A thread about anti-depressive anime without TTGL? What has the world come to. Okay, some parts weren't that happy, but in general it's pretty inspiring.
And I second the Haruhi suggestion. If you're looking for more escapism/romance, well, just go for whatever's your favourite/highest rated. |

They have too easy life, when they seek for bad emotions in anime. It's easy to make "depressive" anime, because bad motives appeal to anyone, no matter how his situation is. The reception of cheerful and anti-depressing elements depends on personal experiences, so it's harder to make/find something that could apply to lots of us. For example Azumanga Daioh. Cheerful, sweet, but when I was in high-school I found it annoying. Now, when problems of that time turned pale I always smile seeing that, reminding good time when I was studying and praying before exam, refreshing nervously web page after that, applications for university, and finally the great relief. (On screen details are different, but I know they felt that way:P) Someone who had another experiences would just hate it. Only Yesterday and Sentimental Journey are my another relief ointment, but here too they speak about my personal experiences. Natsume Yuujinchou brings smile of my face, because I was watching it after moving from my beloved mountains to flat and polluted city. And BTW I hate depressing anime. |

Would this be a good time to mention that I just adopted an irresistibly cute little kitten and named her Chiyo? Yes, I love Azumanga Daioh The best episode to cheer me up is the second culture fest episode. Chiyo-chan in a penguin suit- so cute it hurts.
There's something about the episode of Kamichu! in which Yurie spends the entire post new years day under the kotatsu table that has a special charming and calming effect on me, although the entire series is generally good as an anti-depressant. The slice of fantasy life Miyazaki films are all readily prescribable. Spirited Away, Totoro, Kiki's, Ponyo, Whisper of the Heart. To get me off my butt I'd go with a more propulsive comedy- School Rumble or the action/weirdness/comedy of FLCL. Somehow those shows are ones that make me want to go out and do something. |
