Hello folks, I have a question:
On the My Neighbour Totoro DVD, I've seen (on amazon etc) that there is English audio, Japanese audio and English subtitles; my question is, do the English subtitles fit the English or the Japanese audio? The reason I ask is that ages ago I bought a Ghibli box set from ebay, which of course I then found out isn't legit  and on my version of Totoro from that, the English subtitles are obviously in accordance with the English audio - but I want to watch the Japanese version and be able to understand it!
Why, you ask? Well I'm sure somewhere on here there's probably been a debate on this but I like the original Ghibli style of film - when they're dubbed the Americans tend to put in a lot more dialogue and miss the subtleties of the original scipt, anyway I don't mind If you completely disagree - I just want to watch the Japanese version and understand it without having to take Japanese lessons! |

No worries, many of us feel that way. And luckily, the subtitles are for the Japanese audio track so you can watch Totoro in unaltered cuteness.
The same goes for other anime btw. If you find that the subtitles you see match the English audio track but not the Japanese one, you probably have turned on the worng subtitle track. |

I encountered the problem ezziecat is describing when I watched the official R2 DVD of Totoro. The subtitles were the simply the transcript of the English dub which was available. Text would keep appearing on screen when nobody was talking.
I don't know about the R1. |

rti9 where did you get your dvd, and have you tried again since to get the right subs? I'd like to get a proper, legid dvd but don't want to invest the money if I find I get the same problem =/ |

I just checked my DVD. It's the R1 (Disney) edition, and has Japanese, English and French audio tracks, along with two English subtitle tracks. The first one matches the English voices and has things like "[giggles]" and "[moaning]" inserted whenever people make sounds without words. The other subtitle track matches the Japanese voices and doesn't have the sound descriptions. I think the first is intended for hearing-impaired viewers or so. The second one is what you'd usually select along with Japanese audio.
Oh, I see the DVD menu describes them as "Captions - English - For the Hearing Impaired" and "Subtitles - English". |

The plot thickens then!
I'd be interested in the R2 version as I live in the UK, so prob wouldn't be able to play a R1 (I usually use our PS2 to play DVDs, as I have a DVD player but its background whirring noise is really loud). |

P.S. apparently this kind of thing is a case of 'Dubtitles' lol ^^
That's according to this site: http://homecinema.thedigitalfix.co.uk/content.php?contentid=4957 ... which explains that the R2 subtitles are indeed transcript of the English Dub, rather than translation of the Japanese
I'm hoping there's been a newer version released or something with true subtitles though? Pwetty Pwease?

I haven't picked up the newest Totoro DVD yet but my new Kiki's Delivery Service has two English subtitle tracks. One is the normal "literal" translation and the other is "English for the Hearing Impaired" with is of course the subtitles for the dub as they are what they are meant for.
So, be careful which you're choosing. |

I pretty much own all Studio Ghibli films that Disney released, and they all have English subtitles with Japanese audio as an option. So, just look for Disney marked as the distribution company and you'll know you're getting a legit copy of the movie with all the basic option you want on a DVD.

Thanks Guren A 4, good advice but do you know if Disney distribute any R2 Ghibli films? I've looked on amazon.co.uk and can't find a disney version, and the American site only seems to have the R1, understandably!

The review you linked to, EzzieCat, is of the Japanese release. The official UK release by Optimum seems to have both subtitle tracks as I described, as seen in the screenshots in this review. You can buy the UK edition from Anime On Line. I have other Ghibli movies from that same series, and they all have the right subtitles.
