Forgive my complete ignorance, but I've never read/watched any of this series anime/manga adaptations. Embarassed I was just wondering if this is similar in nature to Akamatsu's other work: Love Hina, which is his only work that I have read. That is to say, is it filled with risque situations and slap-stick comedy, or is it primarily focused on action sequences, or is it a mixture of the two? And say a ratio of romantic harem sequences to battle sequences which would be greater (if it indeed is both)?

It is a mixture of the two, and somehow I would say it is quite possibly about 50/50 even mix. I'd say the negative there is that if you are a fan of one or the other (or if you have an active dislike of one with a strong preference for the other) then when you get the one you don't like it WILL get old, REALLY FAST. But if you WANT a healthy mix of the two, then you get both titillation and action.. (slap-stick comedy will depend on your interpretation thereof, your mileage may vary)

It starts off fairly ecchi and slapsick, but it shifts more to the action pretty early on once the Evangeline story starts. There still remains some ecchi comedy, but I would say the ratio is more towards the action. It almost never feels like Love Hina and, because the Negi is still a little kid, the romance angle is very light so far.

I'm more inclined to agree with Shamisen; we get entire volumes focused on combat, like this one, while the ecchi comedy portions are often used as break from the plot heavy sections. There's still plenty of fanservice and slightly pervy jokes throughout, but I see that as more of Akamatsu's personal style coloring what he intends as primarily a shonen action-adventure story.

If we exclude the most recent (Negi v. Rakan) fight (which consists only of 2 (or 4 if you count the secondaries) DUDES and no female characters, I'd say close to 90% of the fights involve at LEAST one of the girls being rendered topless if not fully nude. The Magic World arc ALONE has contained:
-A monster that only eats clothing
-An opponent obsessed with boobs
-Multiple bathing scenes, including an ENTIRE chapter devoted to a bath house and a different sequence of Asuna & Setsuna sparring WHILE bathing
-A "race" that includes the stipulation that it is "encouraged" to strip your opponent (all participants being girls of course)

And that doesn't INCLUDE the battles themselves which as I said, usually include at LEAST one (sometimes more) girl getting her top blasted off, or cut to pieces or otherwise destroyed. And that's ONLY in Magic World, that doesn't include the numerous lingerie fanservice bits in the festival arc or the "strip laser" (just to name two examples).

I'm enjoying Negima (more or less), but while Love Hina was set at a hot springs, it wasn't NONSTOP nudity and such. The slapstick and ecchi were probably MORE highlighted in Love Hina, but they are by no means "sidelined" in Negima. I'm saying that if you LIKE that, you won't be disappointed. If you LIKE the action parts, you also likely won't be disappointed. But if you HATE the ecchi aspect of Love Hina, then while Negima HAS some great action bit and an interesting story, there is a STRONG component that is just going to bother you.
