So I got and just finished (in two sittings) Soul Eater Part 4.
I think it is rare for an anime to be able to consistently keep it's mojo for over 50 episodes, but Soul Eater does it. If anything, it didn't go on long enough -- it has a lot of minor characters that could get a series all their own, like the other DWMA students or Stein or that froggy-witch girl Eruka that Medusa enslaved (I have a thing for her for some weird reason). So I upgraded my rating for it from "Excellent" to "Masterpiece." It is hard to say what I what I like best, but the engine that makes it work that I find particularly endearing is the meister-weapon relationships. Although Soul is too cool for school, Patty and Liz were out-of-control street punks, and Tsubaki's meister is the appallingly annoying Black Star (he gets much less annoying when he is actually delivering on his boasts) they all support their partners without question and without any inter-gender complications. There have been threads in this forum about notable character pairs, but Soul Eater delivers three, four or more of them and each different. Great stuff, check it out. |

Yea, i just finished the 4th part too. It's really great. Im glad that Funimation was able to release all four parts for at least 6 months not like what they did with Kenichi which took more than a year to release all four parts.
The battle between Kishin and DWMA(Maka, Death the Kid, Blackstar with their weapons) was actually one of the best fights in anime i could put in my list. And i was really surprised that spoiler[Maka was not only a Weapon meister but also a weapon]. Well i guess i'd just have to read the manga to find out more about it. |

Yeah, the manga's pretty good too. I haven't seen the anime yet, but it's definitely high on my 'to buy' list.
I really like the art style, and the series has so much energy that it's just a lot of fun. From what I've gathered from reviews and so on, the art style and energy carried over to the anime really well, and I'm looking forward to seeing it. |

I mean the part under your spoiler tags only happens in the anime and is not in the manga. I was just letting you know since you said you wanted to see if there was more written about it.

Soul Eater is excellent but it diverges drastically from the manga in the later parts. I'm sure it is still awesome to anyone who didn't read it first, but it's kind of distracting for me.
![]() Of course, with the source material still ongoing Bones had to make a decision as to whether to create an anime-only ending or end on a 12 month long cliff-hanger. I understand that and respect their decision, but I feel that the original story is much more engaging. Still, Bones also made the same decision with the original Fullmetal Alchemist... perhaps we will see a 'Soul Eater: Brotherhood' in the future? ![]() |

Depending on how well its done, whether or not a series diverges from its source material doesn't bother me at all. For a series that didn't intend to be a weekly "follow the manga to the end" series like Naruto or One Piece, I thought it did a really go job in making its own conclusion. I started reading the manga halfway through the anime series and wasn't distracted at all by the changes or filler type stuff. Honestly I probably wouldn't have notice if it wasn't for the manga. Kind of like my experience with Inuyasha. Fillers galore but handled pretty well.
I'm just glad the DVD version has a better ending. You didn't get the nice little scenes of "what happened afterwards" like you did in the DVDs. At least I don't think you did. I remember being more dissappointed with the ending when I watched the fansubs. Can't verify now that I deleted them all. I believe in the TV versions you just got a slow panning shot of them staring off into the sky like that second or third to last shot instead of all the extra images. A bit more satisfying the DVDs are, and I'm glad I got them all. |

While I find the manga better, the anime ending was pretty good. I'm not one to complain about changes made, so long as the end result isn't terrible. My main problem was side characters like Kirikou, Kim, and Ox don't really do much in the anime, and I always loved them in the manga (especially Kirikou and Ox's awesome scenes later on) I wouldn't mind seeing a Soul Eater Brotherhood in a few years when the manga is finished.

Rather then a Brotherhood, I just prefer they just continue on with where the anime left off and incorporate the stuff in the manga into its own canon and then when it reaches a good point, switch to a more faithful adaptation down the line. Making fans sit through a season or half a season of recaps is harsh.

In my own opinion, i see the anime and manga as two different stories: the anime, what would have happened when she defeated the Kishin, and then the manga, in which she is still not even close for her to defeating him, the anime is like a 'What if" to me.

The anime has passed the line of being able to get back on track with the manga. |

Bah, they can just make a new bad guy. Although it has been a while since I've kept up with the manga... so I may not remember things properly anymore when it comes to the manga. I'll pick it up again someday.
