Oh dear.

Borders stocks yaoi manga and yaoi light novels, while Barnes & Noble doesn't. For that reason alone, I support Borders, but in addition to that, Borders' customer loyalty card is free - while B&N's is $25/year.

Support Borders - before it's too late!

I completely agree. I would only buy from them more if their free shipping wasn't a joke. I mean Come On a package sat in Sacramento for 4 days before any movement. And then when the package did arrive it took until 3 pm the next day for the web site to say it was delivered. Borders really needs to think about switching to UPS.

But i still like borders Very Happy

It's not like Borders delivers it themselves.

Holy crap, I wish it was that short for me. Media mail to an APO takes at least 2 months.

I haven't bought any manga from my local Borders in a while because they take forever to get new stuff. I asked someone I know who works there why it takes them so long to new manga and he told me that since they're not selling much they're cutting back on the amount they get. Sad times Sad

That reminds me regarding the manga market in the US, here's an interesting read about a mangaka trying to make it in America (yeah, you heard that right Laughing ):

Unlike Japan, the United States does not have a giant nationwide market of comic magazines for children. Takashima said she learned a key to success as a manga artist should be promotional activities at schools and libraries in order to gain recommendation by noted librarians and teachers.

Takashima also talked about a difference from Japanese manga and American graphic novels: Strict guidelines on sexual and violent expression.

‘‘I was surprised to see editors and others discuss whether it is acceptable to print pictures of a girl wearing a tank top before publishing. It was interesting to learn even that could be a problem in this country,’’ Takashima said.

Well, this isnt good, but at least its about $20 million less of a drop than last year, so hopefully this means their condition is at least (slightly) improving

(Loss of $86 million last year, compared to $64.5 million this year)

Yeah, while not great news, it could be worse. The fact that the loss is smaller than last years could be viewed as a positive and the increase in international sales is definitely good news.

My local store has a good selection of current manga (3 stacks) as well as a decent selection of merchandise. I guess what they carry depends on the individual stores.

The only real issue I have with Borders is the awful inventory tags they put in their books. Removing them damages the paper as often as not. I much prefer Barnes & Noble's tags, they peel off really easily and don't damage the book.

Really? I've never had a problem removing the Borders tags. Even when they're put on pages they always have come off for me with no problems. I don't disagree that B&N's come off easier though.

I do hope that Borders manages to turn things around, since they're the only book retailer near me. Yes, I can buy things more cheaply online, but it's not as convenient. It's much easier to pick up a manga at the store and decide if it's something I'd be interested in than to get that same kind of information online. With online reviews, you have to take into account the reviewer's own tastes which are going to slant their opinion of it no matter how objective they try to be. If I got the book in front of me, then I can decide on my own.

That's not the case for every Borders though. Mine gets books by release week and in the case of Tokyopop generally gets them a week early. (My Barnes & Noble gets Viz early. Between the two stores, I get most of my monthly purchases done early.)

Ditto for mine. We get are stuff on release date. Even the waldenbooks that use to be here got their manga on the street date. What borders needs to do is fix how they sell their movies and music. Too expensive and probably where a good chunk of the hemorrhaging is coming from. You need a coupon to just to get the same price you'd get from a BB. Then their membership card is crap. Spend $150 to get a $5 coupon? That might work for clothing stores but their old 5% off thing was way better. Honestly if you buy manga on a regular bases, B&N $25 a year 10% off membership saves you more money in the long run. Even after you factor in the $25 (2-3 mangas).

I would be glad to support a Borders...if there was one in my city. My local Waldenbooks got closed down (they always had decent business but the cashier was a huge dick. He would look down on you if you were going to buy manga). Our city officially has no bookstore, and when your library stocks only Naruto and Bleach, you really have limited options. I'm not going to drive an hour to buy a comic book and I'm sure as hell not going to buy manga and get killed on shipping. I've always been able to rationalize buying anime on the internet, but not manga. The price just isn't worth it.
