I don't know about what conventions you attend, but I've been hitting CMX panels at just about every Comic-con International since they launched & there was always a corner of the huge DC booth devoted to CMX. Granted, we only get around 100,000 attendees at Comic-con every year, but I usually hear it described as one of the largest in the US.

I also seem to recall they were trying to work out the whole cell phone delivery a couple cons back.

Awwwww....damn this is terrible...... Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

I really wanted to get the shoujo titles by them, like Swan, Ah! Itoshi no Banchousama, Venus Capriccio, I Hate You More than Anyone, Tears of a Lamb, Land of the Blindfolded, etc., but I guess I won't be going that......This really ruined my day.

I don't know one person who bought from their line of stuff.

I bought Gon, Shin, and Emma, but was bored by the latter title. Oh, and that disappointing Natsume Batman.

Feral:

Maybe for the readers of shonen, but their shojo line was fantastic. They had some real gems--anything from Nari Kusakawa especially.

I've seen better material from other companies. Hell, even Crimson Hero's more engaging than The Devil Does Exist, and it's from the same manga-ka!

ABCB:

Thanks for your concern. And your concern for people who may have lost their jobs because of this.

I feel bad for them, but they should've seen the writing on the wall a while ago when DC tried to undercut them with Minx.

Quote:
Congratulations, America. You're right on your way back to 1994, when the only stuff released was ultraviolent and pornographic OAVs.

Hey, if you want these companies to stay afloat, you have to get your friends to buy their stuff. It's simple math.

bahamut:
Quote:
They had no potential hits whatsoever (except Tenjo Tenge which got off to a rough start).

TenTen would've probably been as niche as Futari H. Maybe it'd do slightly better, but it wouldn't be a hit here, because, in the U.S., fan-boys like to get porn for free, and fan-girls only go for BL stuff. Hell, even Air Gear, which was published uncut, is already being released in omnibus format.

wilson: I read more than SJ, and CMX's line-up just seemed average to me.

Greggo: Oh, c'mon! What's so bad about MegaTokyo? Wink NSFW.

forty: Not sure if "dropped" is a good word, given what happened to the manga-ka. Crying or Very sad And yeah, I'm still hoping they make it to vol. 12 anyway, before they pack up their bags. Though at least I made it past the C1 version, even if CMX's volume 10 is edited.

Lys:
Quote:
they just didn't have the means to get them to all the readers who might enjoy them.

Actually, they did have the means, given that they were a subsidiary of Time Warner. The problem is that TW knew as much about manga as it did about AOL. Rolling Eyes

silver: If TenTen was one of the company's better sellers, CMX wouldn't have to mislead people into thinking it was uncut.

Sepherest:
Quote:
It worries me that this may cause companies to think twice about licensing older series.

If Vertical can bring back Black Jack, then there's still hope for the oldies. But what's important now is to support the companies which are left.

Romuska: Please. The people who bought TenTen uncut wouldn't even be interested in CMX's other titles, anyway.

Agent: Actually, they're in a legal battle w/ the estate of one of the Superman co-creators. And Minx was axed because it was the worst name you could come up with for a comic line aimed at girls and because the company had the audacity to hire male writers to write stories for girls, thus defeating the purpose. As for CMX, the marketing for it was marginal at best.

Ktimene: Tokyopop has Fruits Basket re-prints to keep the company going for a while. Just like Viz won't take too much of a loss, because of Naruto.

Ah well, looks like my 2 Swan volumes are going on ebay, as there's no way I can afford to buy the rest now before they get expensive. (curse being a poor student with no money)

Oh god no.

Not another one *sigh*

My thoughts go the workers and families affected by this.

If anyone says "No one cares because they have better taste than me" again, I might get upset.

Not everything is your shounen/ shoujo crap fest.

Anyway ...

I was collecting Fire Investigator Nanase (Hell yeah. Manga with chemistry!) but other titles such as "Swan" and "Erotica with love" lost will be devastating. (I also didn't mind 'The Palette of 12 Secret Colors'.)

I was looking forward to Shisso Holiday, Carved and 51 ways to save her.

Sad to see it go. They were publishing actual good series.

Ha. This is weird timing. Just yesterday I was saying to my American-comic fan English Teacher that he should try some manga.

He went "No. That isn't for me. I don't like it." and then I said I didn't like American Comics, he freaked out going "What?! You don't like them?" "Nope. The ones I have read are all predictable and boring. And they just are very limited to the appeal. I have yet to see a really well girl comic with super heroes." Then he gave me a rant about X-men and various comics which I never heard of. "Okay I will try them." then I asked him to the same and he went "What are you saying? Comics give a larger variety then manga. Plus, I wouldn't like it anyway."

Then a random female walked by and he asked her. "Do you like American comics?" she just looked at him and said, "What? You think I LIKE slutty dressed girls? What are you thinking?"

And then he said he would check out some of the female comics for comparisons. Most from this line.

Considering that CMX used the worst paper possible (even worse than Tokyopop) and so most of its manga is almost unreadable after several years, it's not such a big loss for manga fans.

Huh? Mine look just fine. Okay, the the first few volumes of From Eroica with Love are hard to read because of the paper, but I think that's because of the binding and not the paper itself.

As a mangafan, I'd say not having CMX around is a big loss for mangafans, especially the ones who love shoujo. CMX had a lot of great series, it's just too bad so many manga readers refuse to look further than Viz and Tokyopop.

Maybe if we're lucky, a few of the stronger contenders might get picked up -- but until kids start buying manga again (instead of reading it in the aisles at Borders), that's what we're stuck with.

One can only hope. As for Borders manga cows... that shit gets my blood boiling.

I just counted, and I have 37 CMX volumes on my shelves. (While I was counting I couldn't help but also notice all the manga I have that was published by Aurora, CPM, Go!Comi,... so depressing!)

So completion of I Hate You More Than Anyone is doomed. ::sigh:: Unfortunately, by the time something like this happens, the series is often so long out of print in Japan that it's impossible to find for sale online even there. ::silent scream of frustration::

Sad Sad Sad

First Go Comi, now CMX!? Ahhhhhhhh...

At least, I have majority of the King of Cards manga. Just need to get the last volume. =_= T__T I liked CMX for picking up a lot of titles that either went under the radar, is really well-known but not popular, or never heard of before. Tsk... Hopefully, another manga publisher does pick up some of their titles. I'm glad they finished KoC before this, at least.

I've also read "Land of the Blindfold", The Empty Empire", and "Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne" from CMX. T___T NOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo... Guess, I'll have to check Book-Off more often these days...

Different strokes, as they say. I really preferred The Devil Does Exist more because Crimson Hero seemed more angsty & drawn out, although I was only following it in Shojo Beat. I'd have to say Seimaden is preferable to Higuri's Ludwig.

And Eroica--that is so much fun I don't see anyone else going for. We don't get enough humorous yaoi for my money. Not that it was actually yaoi, but yeah.

Now perhaps they'll start thinking of all the money they could have made had they not censored Tenjho Tenge.

the sales of one title would not have saved the entire publishing division.

It would have shown good will towards manga fans who can't stand the thought of being Big Brothered, and thus would have resulted in more people buying their titles instead of boycotting them. As it is, they screwed the pooch big time, and now the karma police are shutting them down.

The first book for Land of the Blindfolded came out more than five years ago, and it finished about 3.5 years ago. If you really want it, then hurry up before it disappears entirely.

Not surprised at all what so ever... I don't know one person who bought from their line of stuff.

It's sad, but they had no titles that people actually cared about. No big loss.

I've never known anyone who actually bought any CMX manga and I certainly never bought any manga form them. Nothing ever interested me, which is very rare since almost every manga company has had at least one series that caught my attention, even for only one volume or so.

I've been buying CMX books since about the time that the label launched, and a screw-up with Tenjou Tenge wasn't going to keep me away from the series that were handled appropriately. A few titles were ones that I bought only the first couple volumes, and some others I bought in their entirety and later gave away or sold after deciding that I wasn't likely to re-read them.

The series that I was buying that won't be completed, or the ones that I bought the full runs of were: Dorothea (*), Emma, Gals!, The Girl Who Runs Through Time, Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne, Land of the Blindfolded, Monster Collection, Name of the Flower, Orfina (+), Oyayubihime Infinity (*), The Palette of 12 Secret Colors, Penguin Revolution, Recipe for Gertrude, Shirley, Tower of the Future (*), Two Flowers for the Dragon (+), and Variante. 106 CMX books in total in this list.

(*) is for the series that I got gave away or sold, and (+) is for the series that will be unfinished.

A couple of the titles that I own are possible candidates to go during my next shelf-cleaning, but the rest won't leave until my whole collection goes. I've been quite happy with CMX, and it's a shame that some of these titles will fade away and never be seen again (not that CMX reprinted things indefinitely, either). One less company also means fewer titles getting released over here, so I'm sure that we'll miss some good stuff in the future.

Oh, no! My very first manga series, the one that got me hooked, was "Land of the Blindfolded." And I just bought all of Apothecarius Argentum and was eagerly anticipating v.9, due out on July 13! I've also bought other titles from them, both for myself and for the library collection, even though I had to actually go to their website to find out what they were offering. I've always tried to support a variety of publishers, but I keep getting burned with half-finished series. Now pretty much everything I buy for the library is from Viz, although I've still got a couple of Tokyopop titles holding on and I've picked up a few from Yen Press. Of course, three of the Tokyopop titles I'm buying are on hiatus....

*goes off in a corner to sniffle dejectedly*
