The only title for me that I have recognized that would have value is Tenhjo Tenge because I'm a fan of the anime but since it's edited I wouldn't know for sure until I see it.

This is terrible! Go-Comi going under was bad, but I find this much worse.

Swan is my favorite shojo series, and they've only released fifteen volumes out of twenty-one. Their site says that volume sixteen will be released in October, but this is pretty much putting the nail in the coffin. Are they going to release what they had planned for later this year, or is July it?

I had high hopes for CMX when I found out about their line - they have great shojo titles like Swan and From Eroica With Love. The only store near me that had their titles is nearly an hour away and I still went out to buy them.

It worries me that this may cause companies to think twice about licensing older series.

EDIT: I just notcied that they had even licensed a series by Usamaru Furuya- my respect for them just increased tenfold.

(And no, Megatokyo never claimed to be manga.)

No, it's not really about all of manga, just the shoujo stuff that never really sold that well. And CMX had well...mostly shoujo. Hell, shoujo anime doesn't sell that well either.

I'll admit I never really read CMX, but it's sad to see them go. For the sake of the fans, I hope that some of those series get picked up. I was interested in Shisso Holiday and Nyankoi!, so with any luck...But, I think part of the problem came from them not licensing more profitable series. It was mostly shojo, and I believe that they had a nice amount of older ones as well. When we look at the publishing industry, the companies with a fair amount of shojo that do well always have a nice amount of male-oriented, newer series. Nyankoi! could have probably done well enough, but there just wasn't enough time, I suppose.

The amount of publishers out there just keeps falling, and it's very sad, especially for those who lost their jobs. It feels like we'll just see more drop in the upcoming months...VIZ (even accounting for the recent downsize), Del Rey, and Yen Press seem to be fine. Tokyopop was/is struggling and seemed to be regaining stability, but their current exploits make me wary. I really don't hear much about DH nowadays. Vertical seems to be getting some sales and doing alright.

Does anyone know what happened to DrMaster? Their website is never updated and they seem basically dead. Same thing with Demented Dragon...Anyone know about that one?

So that leaves us with Dark Horse, Tokyopop, Del Ray, (the now shortened-staffed) Viz, and Yen Press as the big guys, with a few other smaller companies somewhere in between... Looking on the list on Wikipedia,

my eyes hurt after reading "defunct" so many times Sad Miss Broccoli Books... some nice quality paper and prints there!

Another vote for Nyankoi! here. I was really looking forward to that series.

I admit, I haven't bought anything by CMX, but then I live in the UK and CMX titles need to be specifically importing (what I was planning for Nyankoi!) so if a different company picks it up, it might be a good thing as I might actually be able to get hold of it easier! (not that I'm saying a company closing is a good thing of course, but it's not the end of the world for the titles it's licensed...unless DC Comics are bastards and don't relinquish the licenses it owns. Then we won't be seeing any releases of Nyankoi! and others for a good long time...)

so that's 2 manga publishing imprints shut down in as many weeks, while rumors of Bandai and Viz collapse circulate as well.

God help us all.

Now perhaps they'll start thinking of all the money they could have made had they not censored Tenjho Tenge.

Shame, they had a bunch of titles I was thinking of checking out eventually. Guess I'll have to make it sooner rather than later. Luckily everything I was interested in has already been completed, so I'll only have to worry about them going out of print.

Really hope some other company will pick up 51 Ways To Save Her, I was looking forward to it.

Dammit, really? I was just starting to get into shojo manga and they were at the top of my list for currently publishing the best shojo manga. I hope I can still get their stuff at Otakon, I need Tower of the Future on the basis that it is by Saki Hiwatari. Guess this Otakon will be a massive CMX collecting spree for anyone who cares. And just last month I bought all of Land of the Blindfolded! REALLY glad I bought them now.

I hope they relaunch if the economy gets good again though since I highly doubt DC as a whole is going out. I will dearly miss their shojo titles Crying or Very sad I will need to take advantage of the next CMX sale at TRSI for sure, I don't want to not get my Tower of the Future!

And Megatokyo gets to be saved by DC but nothing else? That just upsets me, upsets me dearly. I hope someone rescues some of their incomplete or more prominent titles. And Cromartie High School for, even though that was ADV, I must mention "Cromartie High School" and "title rescue" in the same breath.

And I really hope the rest of the industry finds out what paper CMX was printing on most recently, it's not so thin that you can see through it, but it still makes the manga nice and thin to fit on your shelf Razz And I could use more shelf room, that's for sure.

I have not bought any CMX titles before; I tend to buy original "raws" nor I am interested in the titles listed they were working on.

But for sure this is a sad day. It must be a very tough day for people who are working inside CMX; I wish them best of luck Sad.

Well, that sucks. Was thinking of picking up Emma later, but now may have to buy it now. Anyone know if the anime follows the manga exactly, or were there some major things the anime left out? I'm trying to decide if I should get it or just be satisfied with the anime (which was great).

It has a very different resolution. spoiler[Of course Emma and Will still get together.] But how it all happens is very different. Plus there are neat little side stories, and explorations into minor characters. I really enjoyed it.

If you like Emma then pick up Shirley, it's a one shot volume with maid stories. Very cute.

Hmm, I may have to pick up Emma then too; I loved the anime series. CMX seems like they have a few interesting shojo titles, but this just wasn't a company I heard much about. Sadly, it looks like I'll be missing out on some titles now Confused

the sales of one title would not have saved the entire publishing division.

Another sad Swan fan here. Crying or Very sad Not only was the story engrossing in a way that only 70s shoujo can be, but it was, in a lot of ways, porn for dancers. I can stare for hours at her dance images...

What strikes me is that with all of these companies going under, this could really be feeding the scanlation fire. After all, don't the chances increase of a group picking it up after a company drops it? Doesn't that just add to the number of scans out there?

Damnit! And they just put up the new releases for this summer on their website. I guess DC took a swing and the CMX staff didn't see it coming. not-so-nice-people. Looks like I won't be buying anything from DC anytime soon unless they decide atleast finish the series that haven't ended yet.

This a big loss. I have 15+ of their titles on my shelves and while most are complete now, I will really miss Swan and From Eroica with Love. And I want to know how Apothecarius Argentum ends! And I was looking forward to 51 Ways to Save Her. And there were some series I hadn't started reading yet, but wanted to... and... and...
