Nick Mamatas, the editor who was hired to head Viz's new Haikasoru science fiction novel line, remains employed.
Phew, the translated novels appear to be the only Viz products I'm buying at the moment.

If you'd actually bothered to read the article this thread is about (or even the subject line) you'd know that at very least cancellation is not being discussed right now.

I know I've heard that line before . . . .

Well, this relieves some of my anxiety on the issue.

Not to defend Viz, but the mangaka for Zatch Bell pulled his license from Shogakukan after some legal problems. So Viz had no choice in this matter cause the license was most likely void since it was negotiated through Shogakukan.

I did not know that. I thought it was odd they dropped it, it seemed popular enough to get 3 video games, at least more popular than Flame of Recca...now I know why.

Does that mean some one else could possibly publish the remaining volumes if they felt like it? Sort of like the Samurai Deeper Kyo incident?

Man, I definitely will be buying more stuff. Maybe this is all working on me as intended, but still I don't want to see stuff go away. That being said, I was already going to buy a lot of the stuff that is coming out anyway but still.

While I understand Wooga's pain, I didn't know about the legal problems of the situation. Is Zatch Bell in permanent limbo now? I'd kind of like to see (my library pick up) the last 8 volumes.

If I recall the news story Vertical_Ed is referring to, it was when it was reported that Shogakukan had lost a bunch of the original color artwork pieces of Zatch Bell. The mangaka took them to court over it and won, and pulled his series from them. So Zatch Bell (Konjiki no Gash Bell in Japan) has no current license holder/publisher in Japan for Viz to license it from. So no, the chance of a license rescue is not likely, unless someone can license it directly from the author. Very sad, but nothing we can do about it.

As for the article, I've actually started to buy manga in some force again, trying to pick up the back volumes of One Piece (as I only started reading the manga recently) and hope to get all caught up on the volumes over the summer. And looking at most of my recent purchases, few as they may be, they've all been from Viz (Biomega, Dogs, FMA... and One Piece). So I'm doing my part. Keep going Viz. We'll support you.

To the people worried if Viz will publish more series: it looks like they will be doing ok. Amazon already has listings for Kurozakuro, Puzzle+, Sieho Boys High School, Grand Guignol Orchestra, etc. So they are definitely not ending new releases, slowing down maybe but not ending them.

FORTY PERCENT of the workforce booted and you people are doing the rag dabbing on the head over releases (or soon to be~) not being effected... Again: Funny so much my sides are aching!

I still remember how Newtype USA went down with the Senior Editor crowing over the 15% increase in readership over the last year just before the LAST magazine hit the shelves with a small little notice on the LAST page mentioning that the magazine was kaput.

While you're digitally patting each other on the backs, just remember that one Frank Drebin scene (The Naked Gun) of him telling the crowd that "Nothing is going on here.. move along~"......

While behind him the Chinese fireworks factory is in FLAMES with people fleeing the collapsing building~~~~~~~~ Laughing
