I love Eureka Seven so very much...own the original DVD release, the manga, all that jazz. Posters and soundtracks, you name it. Last year as many of you are aware, they made a movie. I waited for the Japanese release like a good little otaku, and checked out the fansub when it dropped. Loved it, great stuff! Different, but great. The human military EIZO battling the alien Imagi, all the while our young heroes fighting through it to be with one another....splendid!
Now Bandai has finally released the DVD, and I have witnessed perhaps the biggest localization cock up of my life. Ok, as I said the aliens are called Imagi and the military is called EIZO...on the case, in the SUBS, and IN THE DAMN DUB THEY ARE BACKWARDS!! You hear a character say Imagi in Japanese, and the subs read EIZO. You hear JYB voicing Renton talk about the alien and say EIZO - it turned my stomach and, four MINUTES into the film, I turned it off. That's before the title screen for those keeping track.
I am full of the nerd rages by brothers - a curt letter is sent off to Bandai's customer support, but short of re-dubbing the film (which I don't see happening) there is no resolution to this problem. I drove an hour round trip because I saw this DVD was in at a Best Buy near here (not the one in my town, but a half hour away). I paid cash money for this "professional" DVD release, drove all the way home, and it's screwed up. How do you miss something like that ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE DUB?! Nobody caught that? Nobody questioned it at all?
So, while I await response from Bandai, I bequeath you - do not support this shotty release!! It's a small release, and I don't know how many of you are interested in E7 even...but spread the word to anybody you know that is. I love the film, there is nothing wrong with it - but this is the just the biggest screw up in recent history, and frankly shakes my faith in the domestic release market all around (which I am sure will pass once I settle down).
Thank you for hearing me out, and if you're a fan let Bandai know how miserable a job was done on this. I don't really know how to start petitions or anything, but if somebody does I will support it. Thanks.

Maybe the subs got it wrong?

Negatory - I speak a little Japanese, and I listened - they definitely say "Imagi" and subtitle it EIZO...

Oh, and all the original Japanese promotional material calls the aliens Imagi and the military Eizo - and I'm hard pressed to believe the original creators got their own project mixed up that bad.

I know you're upset about this, neoboy3000, but that's no excuse for violating forum rules. Consecutive posts are not allowed. Just edit your last post if you want to add an extra comment on after you've posted.

OH NO!
Consecutive posts on a forum... the fate of the world hangs in the balance.
This place can be so far up it's own backside sometimes.

Can anyone else confirm neoboy3000's claims? Because I want to believe this, as it certainly would be hilarious. I've never heard of a company make that particular sort of error, one which is undoubtedly big yet so easy to not have been made. But I just want to make sure that it really is true, because I would have thought that news like this would have been well-publicised.
So as I said before, can anyone confirm what neoboy3000 says?

I think you may be mistaken neoboy. While it is true that the dub refers to the aliens as the EIZO, it is not true that the original Japanese dub refers to the military as the EIZO. This is not a mistake on the part of either bandai or the dub studio, its part of the rewrite and English conversion done by tony oliver. Not once did they refer to the military as the EIZO in the original audio, unless I missed something.
From what I understand the renaming of the "IMAGE" to EIZO was to avoid confusion in dialog as the word image in english is fairly common. It's also just a better name overall for an English audience. Also I believe eizo is the Japanese word for image as well, although I may be mistaken.
A lot of rewrites were done and almost all for the better. They still couldn't salvage that horrible script. never understood why they went ahead without dai sato on board. Other than that I'm a huge Eureka fan.

I'm going to review the version I originally saw, and also dig back into the Japanese material I saw before. I watched the film three times, so I'd be hard pressed to think I'm in error...not to say I couldn't be, but like I said I'm going to review my information again this weekend.
Maybe if I could get some kind of official statement from Bones or Bandai to totally clarify for me...
**UPDATE** -
-15 minutes into the film, battle display shows alien entity on screen with label "IMAGE"
So I guess the earlier post about the swapping of Image for Eizo (which is in fact Japanese for Image) makes sense. I must have heard eizo somewhere along the way in the film, and that's where I got confused. I must admit that it really threw me, and I don't understand why they changed it for the subs. I suppose that is why it is all caps...liner notes would have saved me some embarrassment here.
I sincerely apologize for my nerd rage, I was over-tired at the time and really caught off guard. Thank you very much to everybody who gave input on this, and helping me to understand what was going on. I know this sort of reaction is reserved to newbies, and not enthusiasts like myself who have been studying anime for a decade now...sorry again. I feel rather embarrassed and a bit ashamed for it.
I hope everybody can see and enjoy this movie, regardless of the localization. *bows* Thanks, and once more, sorry for running such a nerd-rage...

Well, the "nerd rage" here was most likely caused by confusing subs. Not surprising, given how bad subs often are, especially on Bandai's releases. So don't be so hard on yourself, neoboy ^__^

I'm sorry neoboy3000, but you couldn't get me to buy my DVD even if you put a gun to my head. I know I only watched that movie for 20 minutes, but I just couldn't get into it. I loved the original series and all the movie seemed to do is ruin it for me. When I first heard about them making a movie, I was looking either a sequel or prequel...NOT an alternative re-telling.
Pocket Full of Rainbows was a Pocket full of crap!

Here's a thought, who gives a crap? They pronounce something wrong, oh no, let's not watch the movie Funny how you complain about something so small, and yet you don't find it funny that they prounounce Eureka's name as Areka instead of Eureka. If this is true, then it's the fault of the director, not the actors, as they're forced to say Areka and therefore would work that way for everything else.

Phew, that is a relief, even though I'll be only watching the movie with the english audio track and have the subtitles turned off.
