EDIT: See this post for voting.

EDIT #2: See this post for results.

We've been off for more than a month now, so it's finally time to get the ball rolling on this. (And I know some of you have been champing at the bit for this.)

This time we must decide three things:
1) What the next theme will be.
2) Do we keep it the same length or run a shorter tournament with a field of only 64? The round will get condensed a bit in the later stages regardless - at least if I'm still running it. Which brings me to #3. . .
3) Who might pick up administering the game if I decide to bail on that duty?

I'll freely admit that part of the reason it's taken so long to post this is because I was stalling to see if I could refresh my enthusiasm for running another one. It hasn't sufficiently come back yet. Maybe it will by the time we decide on a theme and start forming the field, but we should have a stand-in (successor?) lined up to take over should I choose to abdicate. And that decision could be forced in another month anyway if my job situation heads in the direction I think it will. . .

Anyway, comment on the other two as you're offering suggestions. We'll let things fly freely for most of the week and at some point I'll pick the top 4-5 ideas for a vote.

Standards
1. Themes offered must be ones which can be judged on criteria other than just pure popularity. They must also be conducive to illustration with video clips and broad enough to allow for, at the least, several dozen viable candidates. Ideal themes are ones which can cut across a broad swath of different genres and/or are interpretable on multiple different levels.
2. The following themes, or ideas close to these themes, may not be used, as they have been done before:

Best Team/Organization
Best Duo
Most Clever/Intelligent
Best Hero
Craziest Character
Most Moe
[EDIT: added] Most Evil

The floor is open for nominations.

Biggest Badarse. I don't want it but it seems to be the forgone conclusion, so might as well get it out of the way.

Best Supporting Character. Let's celebrate the side characters who so often contribute more to a show than the main characters manage to do.

Did Key forget about the Most Eviltournament, or are we open for a rerun?
I'm completely out of ideas at this time, since it's been an extremely busy week; week that won't end until Friday or so, when I start my weekend's half day shift.
2) R: I'd say we could try a shorter route this time.
3) R: I'm quite sure there's someone interested, so I'll wait and see how it works. I guess it's a bit too much for me to handle, as I could be starting to do 80 hours a week at work sometime before the end of this month. Afterwards(that could take from 4 weeks up to 6 months) I'll be moving back to 36 hours a week, and that's probably when I could possibly volunteer for anything else. Besides I'm far from a good organizer.

I like the idea of shortening the tournament. I always lose interest after the first couple of weeks because there will be so many candidates I know nothing about other than what I read in the summaries. It also becomes kind of a chore after a while because it gets to a point where I'm going, "Man, I have to vote again."

As for theme suggestions, how about Best Fighter? There would be no clear cut winner with candidates like Mugen, Spike and Kenshin. We could probably even throw in mech fighters if their skills are great enough. It'd also be really easy to make a video that consists of their coolest fight scene.

1. I'll propose a couple ideas used from the last nominations, those being Biggest Badass and Best Old Person. Of course, said old person needs to have had some sort of role to play in the events of the show they were featured in besides just being there. Some notable examples being Coach Kamogawa from Hajime no Ippo, Roshi from Dragon Ball and Katsuhito Masaki from Tenchi Muyo.

I would like to offer up a new nomination called Best Comic Relief Character which features characters whose sole purpose in a title in many of its moments are to bring about comical antics and moments to either help ease the tensions from dramatic or intense scenes and staying detached from much of the main activity occurring in a title. Some nominees fit for this sort of tourney would include Dragon Ball Z's Mr. Satan, Issac and Miria from Baccano, Babbit from Kodocha and Ayame Sohma from Fruits Basket.

2. Whether its 64 or 128 nominees, I'm still taking part in voting.

3. This seems like a tempting opportunity to take up. I'll have to think long and hard about this considering these tournaments have taken half a year to get done in the past. Laughing

Hmmm. I think I might actually give this a try again after getting a bit of a sour taste from some of the previous tournaments. As long as we can pick a topic that doesn't lend itself too much to spoilers. The most evil tournament ruined a good part of my enjoyment of the Soul Society arc of Bleach.

I rather like this idea. Often the supporting characters can be more fun than the main characters. If we go this route, do we need to further narrow it down to a certain genre? Otherwise there might be way too many potential characters to choose from. Plus, a character from a drama series can be great for entirely different reasons than a character from (for example) a comedy. How would you really choose between someone like Mechazawa from Cromartie High School and Kuu from Haibane Renmei for instance?

Anyway, despite these possible issues to work out, I like the best supporting character idea. I think we can find a way to make it work.

I don't think we should narrow it down to a specific genre. I mean, I think being multi-genre is actually a Good Thing. For example, Biggest Badarse would in practice only focus on certain genres, which would not appeal to a wide cross-section of ANN forum-goers. But supporting characters are in virtually every Anime, let alone every Anime genre. Hence, a Best Supporting Character tournament would be very inclusive, with many great candidates to choose from. Additionally, while the two finalists for a Biggest Badarse tournament have already been decided in many voters' minds (Guts versus Dark Schneider), a Best Supporting Character tournament would not be so predictable.

I think the biggest problem with a Best Supporting Character tournament is that it is hard to define "best". But then, we had a Best Duo tournament, a Best Team/Organisation tournament, even a Best Hero tournament. So I believe that defining the tournament would not be an insurmountable obstacle whatsoever, or even a difficult one.

Have you guessed yet that I have a favourite theme in mind . . . ?

.....Biggest Nerd....

Now, the thing with "nerd" is that this can apply to games, otaku, geeks, physics nerds, engineering nerds, whatever. I personally seem to have an affinity for the nerd or geek characters in a series, particularly ones involved with romance (I find nerd romance about 1000 times cuter than non-nerd romance in anime), and not to point fingers, but I suspect there are several otaku and video game nerds on the boards as is :3 And surely some of us must have rooted for the nerd at some point while we're at it (Izzy from Digimon!!!!)
I think it could still cover a decent number of series too, sure, comedies tend to have at least one nerd, but then so do most sci-fi (I'd consider Leeron to be nerdy over mecha in TTGL for example, just look at the way the guy interacts with mechanical stuff!) and even more action oriented series have nerds or geeks in them (Ed from Cowboy Bebop). Not sure on romance series, not my forte, but I bet something's there...

And I never miss an opportunity to revel in nerdiness!!

Quick clarification as to why this isn't the same as Most Clever/Intelligent: here we'd be measuring their nerdy passion and not necessarily how smart they are. There are perfectly stupid nerds in anime too who could have a pretty good shot of going far while smarter but less passionate ones may get left by the wayside early on.

I thought of Kaoru Yamazaki, from welcome to the NHK, like almost immediately.
Also, Tenchi's dad from Tenchi Muyo. He has a whole house dedicated to manga!
When it comes to book nerds, Yomiko Readman.

Hmm, ok I've already though up potential problems that would need to be differentiated with my idea:
1) differentiating "passionate about normal things" vs "passionate about things generally accepted as nerdy". For example, Yamaguchi from Cro High is passionate about comedy, but comedy alone isn't particularly nerdy and neither is he despite how nerdy that show might be overall. On the hand, that guy from Excel Saga (Sumiyoshi) who collects dating sims but never plays them due to them being collectible? Yeah, that's damn nerdy.
This partially would lead to a debate on if we could count Vice Principle Uchiyamada from GTO for the thing with his Cresta, car loving seem particularly nerdy to me (same goes for the guy from Shinesman), but at the same time, he might just be passionately obsessed with a rather non-nerdy object.

2) differentiating "passionately nerdy with machines" vs "adept at using them skillfully as a career without being that nerdy about it". For example, Leeron is rather nerdy about machines while a mechanic like Stan or Koji from Oban Star-Racers are both good with machines but don't seem to really get :3 faces to it, it's just a job for them for the most part. I suppose this could also count things like that guy in Speed Grapher in the recap ep who got :3 face doing accounting vs someone who is good with numbers but clearly not nerdy about it.

3) Definition of what constitutes as "nerdy", what is nerdy to one might not be particularly nerdy to another (although some general things will probably be agreed upon by most people on this board, I'm mostly talking about moderate inclusions here). I'm guessing things would end up going on a case by case basis depending on the point argued vs wether or not its countered by a lot of people, just like normal I suppose.

I'm glad my idea of Best Supporting Character is still kicking it. I'll second that, but I suggested it two tournaments ago and it still hasn't come forward. I think it would be more interesting then Badass which I think would come down to "No gutz is more badass" "nooo, revvy is more badass" "you're wrong" "no you are".

But that's just my personal opinion.

Yeah, Best Supporting Character has been in contention a few times now. It's just never gotten enough support to make it further.

I don't know, I'm half inclined to just go with Biggest Badass just to have it DONE with. But I don't know how much participation I personally would have in that one, since I don't know what I would care about who wins (though I suppose we'd have to see the nominations first to know for sure).

I like several of the previously mentioned topics, particularly biggest nerd and biggest badass since they seems a little different from what we have done in the past. If Biggest Nerd was to be picked, we would need to make clear if social ineptitude is attributor to nerdiness or just a non-factor. Nerd tends to have this connotation when the word geeks tends to lack it. I will probably participate regardless of topic, but they are already a few topics that I think would be better than others. Best supporting character could have merit if it was clearly defined or even slightly tweaked into Best Scene Stealer, a supporting character that has an ability to make a bigger impact than any of the main characters. Heck some of these minor character could even be the reason why we watch the show if the shows leads turns out to be a little lackluster.

As for new ideas, I have always thought that a Most Incompetent tournament would be entertaining, and I think it would be different enough from most crazy. This tournament would seek out the people who just seem fail no matter how much effort they put into something. Their heart could be in the right place or it could be pitch black. They could be for the most part normal, but they don't just get it like most other characters. Characters who are a little nutty, but are fairly successful, such as Light or Lelouch would be extremely weak contenders and most likely not included in the tournament. A number of stubborn characters who choose to try to do the same thing over and over again hoping for a different result may also make a character incompetent. Characters who are synonymous with failure would be among this tournament's elite tier. Internet posters often like to criticism characters on their incompetence and their poor decision making and this would be a great outlet to do just that. In a sense this could be coined as an opposite of a Most Successful tournament.
