Does anyone have an idea whats going on with Hellsing Ultimate. Its nearing about a year and a half since volume four came out on our shores, and there has been no news about future installments since. Have they discontinued it or are they waiting for more to come out in japan before they start releasing again over here. Can some one tell us something?

There are two main problems that I see: Geneon USA shut down after completing volume 4, and following that Geneon Japan merged with Universal.
Geneon USA is not going to be licensing anything new, but they still own the rights to the frist 4 episodes (they distributed volume 4 via FUNimation). I don't know if whatever contract Geneon USA had included the volumes that weren't released or whether they just got then as they came. If no-one has the license to vols. 5+ then someone like FUNimation could pick it up, but to be worthwhile they would also need to rescue the initial volumes from Geneon. Then there's the problem of the dub - FUNimation doesn't have direct access to the Hellsing VAs so would either have to recast the whole thing or farm it out to NGP, which is extra expense they would need to justify. Then there's the question of whether it can be licensed at the moment given the ructions caused by the merger in Japan so...
Basically, there is no easy answer and I don't think anyone knows the anwer, at least no-one in any position to tell us about it.

Well Funimation has said that Crispin Freeman would be involved with the upcoming Slayers Evolution/Revolution dubs. So maybe they can get him again when/if they can get the rest of Hellsing Ultimate?

IMO NOBODY ELSE should be Alucard, but Crispin Freeman!

I'm not sure how they're doing that logistically, since Crispy is Union-only and FUNimation is not Union. I guess they'd have to get his parts recorded in LA rather than fly him in in person, but it shows that it is possible and that they are willing to do it, which is promising.

You said that right, except it should be nobody else other than Jouji Nakata.

I was under the impression that Funi was distributing only. I don't think they have any control of the dub. I've been to Crispin's fanpage but he hasn't said one way or the other. But he's not allowed to, though. Sad

But I agree with Eric. Crispin is Alucard! Very Happy

I wouldn't be to sure about that. There have been many cases where union voices actors will bend the rules to get rolls. The best example is Steven Jay Blum who is often heard doing non-union rolls under the name David Lucas. So who knows, maybe Crispin plans to do something like this. Or maybe Funimation might finally try to work with the unions for once to get a large pool of VAs to choose from.

As for the distribution and dubing is concerned according to ANN the license holder of Hellsing Unlimate is still Geneon and Funimation is only in charge of distribution (as rinmackie said). The Geneon products seem to fall into limbo in these cases. I think technically Geneon is the only company that can continue the release and production of the series.

Some people do bend the rules, and I think Crispin may even have been one of them in the past, but he is firmly Union-only these days from what I have heard.
FUNi can't directly employ both Union and non-Union actors at the same time as that would defeat the point.

I already said in my original reply that FUNimation only distributed volume 4. I'm not sure whether they are also distributing the earlier volumes. It was made clear on ANNCast that Geneon USA will not be licensing or producing anything new so whether they hold the license for 5+ or not, someone else will need to re-license or sub-license it and produce it themselves.
As for the database, if Geneon had released only one volume they would still be listed as the licensor. If someone had else rescued the series they would be listed there also, but Geneon would still be there (see Gad Guard for example).

If there is a problem it most likely stems from the fact that 5-7 were animated by a different animation studio, Madhouse. There might be a complication with the distribution rights. Either that or they're waiting for more episodes to fill up a disc.

Kinda funny though because spoiler[Alucard wasn't even in the last three episodes.]

The other OVAs were all put out one episode at a time here.

Yes, I have them. Doesn't mean they can't change their mind, it's their property.

Yah, like with getting When They Cry Seasons 2 and up (plus OVAs/Specials), Shakugan no Shana Seasons 2 and up (plus all movies, OVAs, and specials), and The Familiar of Zero Seasons 2 and up (plus OVAs & Specials).

It's especially ironic considering that one of the reasons Hellsing Ultimate came to being was Geneon USA playing a part in it, as well as the western fanbase.

And now, we can't even get it. If that isn't the ultimate nail up the ass, I don't know what is.

Precisely. It's times like these where being misguidedly righteous gets you nowhere...
