Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, Lady and the Tramp...stop me when I come across an old fairytale. Besides, Ghibli has its own share of adaptations (Grave of the Fireflies, Kiki's Delivery Service, Only Yesterday, Whisper of the Heart, etc), so if you condemn Snow White and Pinocchio, you're going to have to condemn those, too.

Disney did have a good imagination for making interesting movies back in the day and they still come out with original pieces now; they just suck nowadays. Disney lost it's edge a couple decadse ago, compare their modern works to Ghibli and it's no contest.

I don't think anyone is seriously arguing that Disney has done anything good in the past decade (with the exception of Lilo and Stitch).

Actually, 'The Lion King' is based on Osamu Tezuka's 'Kimba The White Lion', which in turn is based on Shakespeare's Hamlet (which is based on an old Norse legend).

The Lion King is a ripoff of the Skjoldunga Saga.

No, this is wrong. I don't see any significant elements of the Skjoldungasaga in The Lion King. It seems fairly obvious that the "storytelling pedigree" (such as it is) of Disney's The Lion King is as follows:

    1. The Lion King is an uncredited remake of Kimba the White Lion
    2. Kimba the White Lion is strongly inspired by (but not completely derivative of) Shakespeare's play Hamlet.
    3. Hamlet is derivative of (but not identical to) the Danish legend of Prince Amled, which is to be found in the Gesta Danorum by Saxo Grammaticus (publ. ca. AD 1200).
    4. The Gesta Danorum is a Danish attempt to create a national history out of legendry, similar to what the Venerable Bede did for the British Isles, in the early 8th century.
    5. Bede, in turn, drew upon traditions harking back to Livius and Vergilius (Livy and Virgil, if you're not a Latinist), who incorporated legendary elements into semi-official Roman history, back in the 1st century BC.

Just thought I'd clear this up.

Of all of these, the only "plagiarism" (or "process of inspiration", if you will) which really annoys me is Disney's - since Disney has repeatedly denied it. There's absolutely nothing wrong with letting your art be inspired by others, but denying it is the mark of a lower grade of morals.

Um, wow. I'm not all that familiar with the Skjoldunga Saga myself, but I had read that it was one of the earliest sources Hamlet could be traced back to. I must admit that you know way more than me.

Even if Disney did know they were ripping off Kimba the White Lion, I would still have trouble getting worked up over it. Mainly because I still respect Sergio Leone, even though he not only didn't credit Kurosawa for A Fistful of Dollars, but also claimed he hadn't seen Yojimbo (which he did). It's like bashing Bush for stealing his election, but praising Kennedy.

Besides, who cares if The Lion King is a ripoff? Even if it was just a coincidence, The Lion King has fart jokes. That's enough to condemn any movie to the scrap heap.

Well, as it happens, I am a professional historian, and while my current specialisation is in the subject of medical history, I do have a secondary specialisation in mediaeval history (the two overlap). I've even had the opportunity to see the actual Angers fragment of the Gesta Danorum, at the Royal Library in Copenhagen - the only known fragment of the original text, still with Saxo's emendations, in the manuscript.

Very good point - I'll have to grant you that you can't do one without the other. Of course, I've always done both, so this presents no obstacle to me.

Heheh. Smile Now, now, what's wrong with a fart joke or two? Mel Brooks got excellent mileage out of them in Blazing Saddles.

Oh, now, that would be taking away my raison d'etre - I could stop proving you wrong, but all the life would go out of me, and I'd end up homeless on the streets, begging passersby for a bite of their Pocky.
