I'm really disliking Viz's advertisement of this thing. They make it out to be some kind of amazing spectacle, but I've read it and it's an extremely generic series. The plot definitely has a Stan Lee feel to it, but that detracts from the experience rather than adding to it. Manga is best when it's original, unlike comic books, where the most generic series are usually the most popular.
Ultimo may be original to Stan Lee, but a good-versus-evil battle royale between puppets with special powers and assigned human partners is extremely unoriginal in Japan (Zatch Bell ). There's also a lot of storytelling Wallbangers later on in the series. This series is definitely a contender for the Deux Ex Machina award, I'll tell you that.

Isn't it their job to make the product seem good.

It wasn't anything special, to be sure, but I enjoyed the preview enough. Didn't realize it hadn't been released yet though. That preview in Shonen Jump was a while ago o.O

It's not amazing, but I'm enjoying it way more than I thought I would. Enough that I would probably buy it if it were to leave the magazine.

bahamut: Same. Moreso than Tegami Bachi, that's for sure.

so far i'm not into Ultimo at all. they should've kept the style from the pilot issue, instead they made it into every other shounen manga. also, is it just me, or is this manga very homoerotic? like more than your average shounen. i'm very interested in seeing how people take this one.

I've read the manga in Shonen Jump and it doesn't really stand out to me. It's interesting and fun to read, but it just doesn't interested me enough to completely buy a copy of it when it arrives.

v1cious: You talking about the fact that you can't tell whether Ultimo is a guy or gal?
