This is something that I noticed while watching those great anime. Why are there so many panty shots there? Watched "Kiki's Delivery Service" few days ago and tought they went too far.
I do have respect toward the classics they made but just don't understand why the fan service(well, panty shots)? I don't think it's necessary since it's aimed more for children. |

Not every flash of panties is there for reasons of fanservice.
I read this as being a sign of Kiki's immaturity (= innocence). That is, you are meant to think of her as a sweet child. Remember, the whole theme of the film is Kiki's coming of age. - abunai |

Fan service at Ghibli? What are you talking about? Now, it's been a long time since I've seen Kiki, but I don't remember any shots that were at all inappropriate. Kiki is an innocent girl, nothing else.

This reminds me of a Danish proverb: "For den rene er alting rent." That is, "To the pure (of heart) everything is pure".
Oftentimes, this will be jokingly extended with the words "...men for dig er alting noget griseri." ("... but for you, everything is dirty"). Not that I'm implying MasterFuu harbours impure and lecherous thoughts or anything... -abunai (We really need a "nosebleed" emoticon...) |

It's not that my heart is dirty (well, maybe a little ) but it's just that you notice those things. It's not that I'm trying hard to look or anything and I sort of understand that it's INNOCENT but Why?? I haven't seen any american cartoons (non-anime) doing that. So was wondering what Miyazaki is up to
Also in every movie except "Mononike Hime" there are plenty of shots. |

Could it be because.... Americans are uptight? Naw, it couldn't be that.... - abunai |

To MasterFuu: Ecchi nanoha ikenai to omoimasu!
Seriously though, I'd agree with abunai that Americans are more conservative towards those issues, especially American cartoons are targeted for children. IMHO that fan service, as the mainstay of many romantic comedies and as comic reliefs for other genre which has some romantic relationships involved, simply does not fit for the two major genre of American cartoon, 1) comedies with simplistic character design (thus not much to see), and 2) superheros (heroines may have skimpy outfits, but not in a fan-service style). Fan service are best with accidents; intentional skimpy clothing is not what I call a fan service. For panty shots in Kiki and other Ghibli films, there's no "candidate" around when it happens, so I'd say it's just a way to show their innocence. |

I think it's an in-joke. I'm sure Miyazaki got annoyed with all the people who thought that Nausicaa's white pants were bare flesh, so he put in the panty shots in Kiki's Delivery Service to remove any doubt as to what she was or wasn't wearing.
But that's just my theory. I could be wrong. |

Actually, jfrog, I rather like that theory. It may or may not be true, in whole or in part, but it's an attractive theory.

Somehow I have that feeling that it doesn't sound too good if translated into English. But anyways , what does it mean? Let me guess first: " To MasterFuu: you're one big perv! ? Still want to let you guys know that I'm actually normal OK. thanks |

Aww, it is the cute motto Mahoro always use to reprimand Suguru, "dirty thoughts are not good!" (えっちなのはいけないと思います!) Check out Mahoromatic Summer Special for details. |

I think he was referring to that scene when Kiki first puts on her witch's dress and was spinning around as her dad was watching, just before he picks her up (pun not intended). In anycase, fanservice in Miyazaki's works. Forget it! It is NEVER intended to be fanservice. And those don't look like panties, more like bloomers? Or whatever they call it. |
