Hey,

I was wondering if I could get some opinions on the Dot Hack Sign Dub. I've been thinking about going out to buy the DVD's, but I've only seen it in Japanese. Any thoughts, positive, negative about the Dub? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Well, the great thing about DVDs is that if you don't like the dub, you can always watch it in Japanese. However, I enjoyed the dub. I thought Mimiru started off a little ditzy and blase, but she improved in later volumes.

If you like the series, then I say go for it. You can always turn off the dub if it doesn't suit your tastes.

What Sakechan-sama says is true. The whole sub vs. dub argument is easily solvable by just switching the languages on your DVD player.

As for .hack//SIGN's dub, I really can't stand it. I first saw some of the series on Cartoon Network and later at a friend's house after he got some of the DVDs.

He prefers dubs and thinks that for any show he really likes, the dub is all that, and the Japanese version doesn't exist. But when I finally bought all the DVDs myself and watched it in Japanese, I loved it, which then leads to my pet peeve of "the more I like a show, the more I expect from the dubbing."

And in the case of .hack//SIGN, expectations were NOT met. But that just goes to show you that I like the series very much. Basically, my problems were with voice tone, pitch, and inflection. If they didn't dub it right to what I wanted, then it automatically got a bad rating.

Tsukasa sounded a little too raspy and less like what spoiler[ she] should have sounded like in the Japanese version.

As Sakechan-sama also said, Mimiru sounded quite ditzy throughout out the beginning, only I chose not to "get used to it." Not to mention I also thought she sounded like a b**ch somtimes. Mad

Subaru sounds way too quiet and unassertive to bring out that same kind of attitude she possesses in the original.

And... well, I could go on and on, but I don't want to seem like a stupid fanboy.

Anyway, if you want a more subjective opinion though, I'd say it's a good dub if you really don't want to read the subs. It's nowhere even near my standards (except for Silver Knight and A-20,) but it's a lot better than some (*cough*, GTO...) Laughing.

Be forewarned though, if you plan on watching this on a home theater system, be sure to watch in Japanese because that awesome soundtrack is much more prevalant in Japanese than in the dub (*whispers* the dub voices are a little quiet at times and they had to turn the music down so people could hear them... Rolling Eyes)

Like Tony K. said I can't stand it either. But when I watched the sub I thought it was kind of better...then again I didn't really like the show in the first place Razz but I don't really think it was a good dub either.

:nods: Also I pretty much hated Tsukasa's voice. And Mimiru just acted ya know...a little ignorant to her surroundings.... Confused

Well, I'm not a huge judge on dubs, but I thought the dub was alright. The dubs did have its down parts, but it was still good. The japanese one however is better than the dub. I think so anyways.

Its fine in either language I think, infact I'd insist you watch it in English first, just so you have no ppre-made concepts on what the voices "should" sound like.

Also, Tony k., not meaning to nitpick but why do you put -sama at the end of peoples name, when you're not even speaking Japanese? Just wondering.

It's just a little "thing" of mine to show how much I respect that person, to show that I admire them for their (usually) intellectual and/or enlightening demeanor when they reply to questions or make comments.

By the way, can you refresh my memory on what a "eunuch" is? I've seen a few in Hong Kong movies, but I don't really know what they're supposed to be.

I believe eunuch is a title of some sort, buy I can't remember what. Confused

Castrated male servant, or something like that.

Or in some cases, Singers? Nagisa is on the mark there. and Tony K., I wasn't asking what it meant, I was asking why you were injecting faux-Japanese into english sentences? makes no sense really.

I thought it was pretty good. The only voice that I thought was a little off was the Silver Knight - spoiler[I've never known anyone in their early 20's, as we eventually find out he is, who actually sounds like that.].

I thought Dave Wittenberg's Sora was a scream and stole almost every scene he was in, but that's just my opinion.

The actual translation seemed to be extremely close to the Japanese original. I noticed upon watching the sub that a few mild curses were edited out, probably to meet PG-13 broadcasting standards, but that was no biggie. The one real difference that I noticed was spoiler[B.T.'s prediction to Sora. In the original, she ominously warns him he's going to "die like a dog" (not all that off from what actually happens to him) - in the dub she only mildly warns him that he's going to "pay"']

I found that I like watching the dub version first so that I don't have to actively read while watching. That way I can be more observant of the animation and character interactions. Then if I like the series, I'll then watch it in Japanese as time permits, and assuming that there is a legitimate copy avaliable that I can afford.

Thought so. I heard something about that in the audio commentary. Just wanted to make sure...

I wasn't trying to explain what it meant, I was merely telling you why I do it.

It's just for fun. Sorry if it annoys you steventheeunuch-sama... Laughing Arrow Wink

Ok, ok. Jeez, I guess forums aren't the place for having fun then... Sad

You and Cookie are the only ones that've told me to stop doing this, only Cookie was nicer and said to not put those titles on his name, but that it was Ok for everyone else. Rolling Eyes

Well then, I'll heed your request and stop respecting everyone. Okie-dokie, Steventheeunuch? Wink
