The best defence I can offer Final Fantasy: Unlimited is my avatar and my review of it on My Anime List (which needs some updating in the other titles). I won't deny that it has many faults, but I love it nonetheless.

I agree with you. While I understand anyone who complains about this being a horrible entry in the FF universe, I personally found it amazingly entertaining once I got through the first 4-5 episodes. And was subsequently very disappointed when I heard it was cancelled due to low ratings. The sudden change in gears right around episode 18-19 or so, when the characters were in the Ocean Puzzle, iirc, was so obvious it was sad. Then it was mad dash to the end of the series, and left with a nice little, "Oh, we're done, but we're not done, and the bad guys are still there. Maybe we'll make more some day, if the viewers retcon this series into a masterpiece." Like that'll ever happen. 
PS> I originally watched this series with my younger sister, eight years my junior, as the DVDs were coming out, and she recently asked to borrow it so she could rewatch it. She could still sing along with the opening theme. Go figure... |

Hmmm, looks like next week's question might get some good answers, I might actually read through each reply. My take is this: while it would do much better on CN (because who doesn't get that channel?) ratings wise, Disney does treat their anime well (except for that part where they cut out with Miyako slapping Ken in Digimon 02) and it looks like it belongs on the same channel as Batman TAS. CN is turning into a cesspool and it looks like they're focusing on original programming and ridding the channel of its namesake.
I don't want to see Naruto on [AS], they already have Bleach, we don't need more than one long running anime with new episodes every week. |

I say Disney
 has a chance with this. They do treat their anime fairly well. My only concern would be how much editing would be involve. Would it be the drastic One Piece from 4kids  . Or will they live it well enough alone. I mean Disney can turn out better shows than CN apparently now.

I'd read that it was in fact cancelled because Square could no longer afford to fund it due to the financial failure of that awful CG movie.
I might be overly optimistic here, but I think people would have been much more forgiving of the first couple of episodes if the series had run for the full 52 episodes it was intended to. Especially having read (what was published of) the After chapters myself. Oh, if only the television series had made it this far... |

If Ben thinks Tenchi in Tokyo is bad, he should stay away from the third Tenchi OVA, because it's even worse, and it's from the guy who actually came up with Tenchi Muyo!

I wouldn't agree with Ben on that one as I happen to like Tenchi in Tokyo even though I will say of out Tenchi Muyo (The first two OVA's_, Tenchi Universe, and Tenchi in Tokyo, Tenchi in Tokyo is the weakest of the three. The third OVA was okay, but it felt off overall. It was like something was a miss the whole time. |

Yeah, like the comedy, the romance, and the overall fun the first 2 OVA's had. I think the whole OVA was a miss. |

Agreed wholeheartedly. Tenchi in Tokyo was very OTT/wacky/zany compared to the previous two series, and was still quite funny at times (I loved the whole "throwing a spanner in works" in the form of Sakuya, until the revelations later on), but I still preferred Ryo-Oh-Ki and Universe over it. In regards to Ryo-Oh-Ki, it was very good... up until the third OAV came out. I didn't quite know what to think at the end of it, and I agree that something just didn't fit (too many new characters at once? increasingly complicated character relationships? very average action compared to the previous two series? little to none of the trademark romance-comedy?) It's a shame, considering that, up until that point, I thought that the first and second OAV series were the best out of the Tenchi Muyo! continuities. Of course, one must consider the third OAV as part of that series now, so overall it went downwards in my books. Universe was always my favourite continuity of the three. It was well balanced, didn't drag out too long, and I was relatively satisfied with the resolution. It even spawned two movies (the first one was awesome, the second one was meh). It helped that the continuity-specific characters were solid as well (Nagi served as a decent rival to Ryoko, and what can I say about Kiyone Makibi? Probably her best version between this, her Tokyo outing and her OAV first appearance). Apologies for my wall of text. Carry on... ^_^ O-O~ |

More of the same. I believe the hero gets the girl eventually, but I assume any dissection of the plot itself perhaps contradicts the author's intent. I for one am not going to vilify the work, but I will say it works in certain ways for certain viewers.*
Surely, the monetarily gifted fans should know a bit about the titles they wish to obtain merchandise of. Do any deeply-pocketed enthusiasts actually fall for these items, on the grounds that they believe them to be genuine components of the animation process? Perhaps they're just happy to have an official product, regardless of its actual importance to the production itself. *I would say "different strokes for different folks", but that'd sound contextually suggestive. |

I still have the Final Fantasy Unlimited thinpak, because while incomplete there were many aspects of it that still made it for me. The most memorable episode to me was when the girl meets a lonely little boy and finds out that he's the spirit of a plant she took care of; I actually found it a little touching.
To this very day, I remain a fan of Tenchi Muyo and all its spin-offs (including Sasami-Magical Girls Club). In saying that, while I understand everyone’s beef with Tenchi in Tokyo, and I can acknowledge it as the least best of the Tenchi series, I still love that one. Yes, the animation’s crude, but it’s always great seeing each of the characters go through alternative adventures and develop in alternative ways, and this show had me hooked all the way to the end. And on the subject of the third OVA series, the only fault I found in it was that nothing happens. I thought I heard they planned on having Tenchi choose one of the girls finally (Funimation even advertised it as much), but then backed out of it at the last minute. Still, Sasami had a kick-ass fight scene and it was really nice seeing Ryoko and Ryo-ohki have a genuinely affectionate relationship for once. I am so, so, so, so, *so* glad someone thinks the X movie is as godawful as I do, because really, it is. It just is. It was awful the first time I watched it, it’s awful when I just remember it. I never thought of Akira as a particularly great movie, but next to X it really is a masterpiece. |

I wanted to submit Garzey's Wing for last week's question, but didn't get a chance becuase of work.
 I read about this in Buried Garbage and couldn't believe it was as bad as he said it was. I bought it and it is so bad its hilarious (iin the MST3K kind of way). 
My friends and I are constantly quoting some of the ridiculous lines. I believe thus is one time where they stayed too close to the literal translation from Japanese to English. The uninspired voice acting is the worst I have ever heard. The worst part is that it was created by Tomino and I love Gundam. How this could come from him boggles my mind. That's what I've heard as well. Because apparently it wasn't enough for me to hate FF Spirits Within and consider it the worst FF "series" ever, now I have to find out it may have screwed over Unlimited (which I found so-so). Is Lina's over-eating in Slayers meant to be looked at that way? I saw it as the typical "main shonen lead loves to eat a ton without gaining a pound" trope. Just because the lead happens to be a girl in this instance doesn't mean they're implying something else, it's no different from Goku, Luffy, etc. |
