In real life the best teams and organizations are those which have a strong sense of group identity and great internal chemistry, traits which allow them to work effectively towards a common goal, whether it involves winning a match, striking down dastardly villains, protecting the innocent, promoting evil ends, or something as mundane as creating music or producing a play. In the anime sense such groups must also be entertaining and support the mood and tone of the source title (i.e. a team in a comedy should be funny, action teams should offer butt-kicking thrills, and so forth) and/or set an example for teams from later titles to follow. These are the main criteria on which the Best Team/Organization tournament will be judged, and are criteria which should be used when evaluating the worthiness of a group to participate.
UPDATE: The brackets for the tournament have now been set. See this post for details. UPDATE #2: Minigame information can be found here. UPDATE #3: The trivia challenge can be found here. Eligibility Any anime movie, OVA, or ONA which has been officially released in Japan or the U.S. by the start of the nominations process is eligible, as is any series which has completed at least one full season; hence, series which first started in the Summer 2009 Japanese TV season are not eligible. Groups nominated from eligible titles must meet the following requirements: 1. Must consistently have 3+ members. Always having the same members is not necessary. 2. Must either have a formally established name (preferably) or be readily identifiable by an assigned name (e.g. Basroil Bridge Crew, Seven Samurai). 3. Must not be a national-scale political or military entity, although subdivisions of such entities – such as individual military units, departments, or sections – are allowed. Groups whose main identity is as a family unit or race are also not allowed. 4. Some kind of organizational structure – a definitive leader and/or assigned roles for members, for instance – is preferred but not required. Groups lacking this one won’t be disallowed but should be considered weaker nominees. Examples of groups which could be considered include but are not limited to: military/militia/paramilitary squads, sentai (i.e. super-hero) teams, ship crews, school clubs, non-academic clubs, small businesses, mercenary organizations, company departments, law enforcement bodies, task forces, bands, Illuminati groups, and villainous organizations. One of the trickiest individual cases on classification is the 13 Court Guard Squads from Bleach. They may be nominated and voted on as a whole or as individual squads, and voting will determine which way they ultimately end up in the tournament; if individual squads get more votes than the collective then the collective will be dropped (and vice versa). This will also be the rule should any other overlapping cases come up. Nominations Rules For those who have done previous tournament nomination processes, the rules are basically unchanged from the last one: 1. Any forum member in good standing (i.e. not banned) may nominate, support, or vote against any number of candidates. 2. A nomination or vote of support for a candidate counts as +1; a vote against counts as -1. 3. All initial nominations must be justified, as must all negative votes. This is not necessary for supporting votes but is still encouraged. 4. Nominations will continue for 14 days or until I judge that the voting is tapering off, whichever comes first. Once time is up, the top 128 scorers make the cut. In the event of a tie at the cut-off level, least number of negative votes is the main tiebreaker. 5. No more than three entries from a single franchise will make the cut. In the event that more are nominated and qualify, only the top three scorers will be allowed in, so keep this in mind when choosing teams from series which have many options. 6. Team or organization name must be put in bold with the anime title in italics (e.g. Squad 7, Valkyria Chronicles); in cases where the team name and series name are the same, you may list them once in bold italics (e.g. Ouran High School Host Club). Whether you are nominating, voting for, or voting against the team must be explicitly stated right before that, although using a “Vote For” or “Vote Against” or “Nominating” heading when doing multiple votes in the same post is acceptable. If I cannot tell at a quick glance whether or not you’re actually making a vote, or which way, then your vote won’t be counted. 7. If you change your vote, correct it in the original post AND make a new post indicating that you have done a correction. Please also be aware that nominators may be expected to help write the Guide entries for the groups they nominate, so don’t nominate any group you don’t know well. Also, the cut-off in the past has generally been at a +2 score, but still keep voting for a candidate even once they reach that level because high scores contribute greatly (though not exclusively) towards determining seeding. NOTE: A .9 on the scores below (instead of a full point, as in 8.9 vs. 9) indicates a nominee with at least one vote against. To set an example for the kind of format I want to see, here are a few nominations to get started.
Nominating: ACROSS, Excel Saga – This “secret ideological organization” aspires to eventually conquer and rule the world but actually only has three regular members, one of which is thoroughly incompetent and two of which have bad habits of regularly dying. The organization’s haphazard attempts to gain power in curious ways lie at the heart of the series’ comedy appeal. Black Knights, Code Geass franchise – Though they ultimately become a national-level military force, I’ll allow them because they don’t start out that way and only gradually build towards those dimensions. They are initially a terrorist group/freedom fighters (depending on perspective) with the ultimate goal of freeing Japan from Britannian rule who are directed by the mysterious masked Zero. Black Lagoon Company, Black Lagoon franchise – This group of hard-edged individuals work as pirates, couriers, and other tasks of questionable legality all in the name of making a living. They are led by Dutch and centered around use of the torpedo boat Black Lagoon, although they also often undertake purely land-based tasks. Chor Tempest, Simoun – The main group around which the series is centered, this is a team of priestesses who pilot the sacred Simouns for ceremonial duties, though they also perform reconnaissance and combat missions. Ostensibly led by Neviril, they pilot the Simouns in pairs and typically must work cooperatively with other Simouns to achieve their most powerful effects. Debris Section, Planetes – The group at the center of the series (and which is composed of much of the core cast), this little-respected section of space garbage collectors is charged with removing dangerous junk from the spaceways. Gekkostate, Eureka Seven – They are an anti-government militia and counterculture movement based about the flying ship Gekko, which forms one of the main focal points of the series. Lead heroine Eureka is a founding member and lead hero Renton eventually becomes a member. The Knights, Serial Experiment Lain – An ambitious and secretive group of hackers which both helps and interferes with the heroine throughout the series. Knight Sabers, Bubblegum Crisis/Crash/Crisis 2040 – A group of female vigilantes who don advanced armored suits in order to combat rogue Boomers, these four young women become a tight-knit (if not always perfectly agreeable) combat team. NERV, Neon Genesis Evangelion – This secret U.N.-sponsored organization is ostensibly in charge of developing and using Evangelions (mecha) to combat invading Angels, but they also have a even more secretive secondary objective. Most of the major recurring characters in the series are members of NERV. The Organization, Claymore – This behind-the-scenes group is technically unnamed but commonly referred to by this moniker. They are the ones who create, train, and direct the Claymores and may have less-than-clean motives. Ouran High School Host Club – A varied collection of pretty boys and one girl (who poses as a boy) who run a host club for girls at their prestigious high school. They have a definite leader and each member has a certain specialty for attracting girls. Pumpkin Scissors (aka Section 3), Pumpkin Scissors – This military unit is devoted to war relief and works tirelessly towards that goal under the field leadership of Lieutenant Alice L. Melvin. Science Ninja Team Gatchaman/G-Force, Science Ninja Team Gatchaman/Battle of the Planets/G-Force – As the seminal anime combat team they are unquestionably the single most influential team in anime history. Although they first came on the scene 37 years ago, even to this day the structure and composition of most anime and live-action sentai teams – five members, five certain colors, even the personalities and group roles (red is always the leader, for instance) – are patterned off of them. They were the first to do combination moves and (I believe) the first use a vehicle which could fight as a whole or break down into separate individually-piloted parts. Although they sometimes have their internal conflicts, they are a team first and foremost and work cooperatively to ultimately defeat all foes, kicking much bad-guy butt in the process. Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise – A somewhat secretive police force assigned specifically to dealing with cybercrimes. Has a definite leadership hierarchy and good group chemistry and is composed of most of the franchise’s major recurring characters. Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture (aka Genshiken), Genshiken – This college club is a catch-all group for otaku, including manga, anime, and cosplay interests, around which the series is based. Soldats, Noir – The main group opposing the protagonists throughout the series, this secretive organization tries to recruit or eliminate Kirika and Mireille depending on who’s giving the orders. The SOS Brigade, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya – Arguably one of the weirder of all anime groups, each member (except Kyon) has a specific purpose for being there and a specific role they fill within the group, all under the domineering leadership of Haruhi. They all (more or less) work towards objectives set by Haruhi and have a definite (if forced) group identity and vibrant group chemistry. Vesper and SAINT, Mahoromatic franchise – These form two of the three main opposing secretive organizations in the series. Vesper, of which lead heroine Mahoro is a retired member, is a group which defends the Earth from the attacks of the alien group SAINT (although the series eventually reveals that the two groups have a deeper past connection). |

Team Rocket, Pokémon - Team Rocket has two faces in the anime; the nationwide gang of ruthless criminals led by Giovanni, and the bumbling trio of Jessie, James and Meowth. On the larger scale Team Rocket is a truly dangerous group, at the cutting edge of science and capable of threatening the entire world. On the other hand, our usual view of them is as a practically useless gang, though a lot more human than the usual faceless Rocket goons.
Ala Alba, Mahou Sensei Negima! OVAs - Also known as Mahora's "British Culture Reseach Club" this was originally formed to help Negi find his father and bring him back safely, though since being stranded in the Magic World there's been more of a shift towards defeating Fate and saving the world. Advised by the Dark Evangel and led by Negi Springfield, the members have a diverse range of abilities and training, including specialists in computer hacking, information gathering, healing, sword fighting, martial arts, ninjutsu, mind reading and magic. One vote for Chor Tempest (Simoun) because they really come together together in the face of disaster.
One vote for the SOS Brigade (MoHS) because they are hilarious and never let spoiler[ the world be destroyed. ] They complete their goals and overall have a good group chemistry. Nominating The Inner Sailor Scouts ,Sailor Moon- They always get the job done. The friendship of the girls in this group is phenomenal. Each one of the girls is willing to put their life on the line for any other scout. They were all brought together by their leader spoiler[ and princess] Usage (Sailor Moon.) Even though scouts get added from season to season the inner senshi are always there. |

Let's see now:
Nominating: -Beck (BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad): The first of three anime music bands I'm nominating for this tourney. Beck is the titular rock band of the series featuring four members who are struggling to make it big and is the major push that helps protagonist Koyuki out of his boring outlook on life. -Trapnest and Black Stones (Nana): The other two music bands I nominate for this tourney. Both are punk rock bands with Trapnest being a widely popular music band that Nana Osaki's lover Ren joins with and the Black Stones being the band led by Nana O. as she struggles to become a famed musician. -The Flower Four (Hana Yori Dango)- Four of the wealthiest and attractive boys at Eitoku Academy who dictate all the actions that take place throughout the school and become acquainted with the lower class girl accepted at the academy, Tsukushi Makino. -Akatsuki (Naruto)- A group of ten powerful ninjas who each deserted their villages and created a criminal organization desiring complete control over all the powerful ninja nations. -The Paper Sisters (Read or Die TV)- A detective agency consisting of paper magic wielders Anita King, Maggie Mui and Michelle Chang who accept cases that involve missing books, pets or being bodyguards for targeted authors. Okay, let me see my brain actually works today:
Nominating Inner Senshi, Sailor Moon - Five girls from different backgrounds who become a unit to save the Earth from Evil. While they, frequently, have differences with each other...when it comes down to it they buckle down and get the job done. STN-J, Witch Hunter Robin - another group of different individuals but who have one thing in common - witch powers. And in one member's case, mad hacker skillz. Some of them are hiding secrets from each other but, again, they are together when it comes right down to it. The TAC, Blue Seed - a Government group created to study and defeat the strange creatures that have been popping up all over Japan. This group works together to prevent Japan's destruction and the destruction of one of their own. Clamp School Detectives - Three very charming boys who cannot leave a damsel in distress and work together to solve the mysterious happenings on their school campus. The Warriors of Suzaku and The Warriors of Seriyuu, Fushigi Yugi - two groups who have rather similar goals but with entirely different desires in the end. One works to protect all and the other led down the wrong path by their leader. Magic Knights, Magic Knight Rayearth - Three girls plucked from their home and taken to a different world to protect it and to keep it from being destroyed. Nadesico Crew, Martian Successor Nadesico - A group of people who are completely different from each other - crazy, unwilling and just plain weird at times, but they work together to protect their world, the people living on it and each other. Leafe Knights, Pretear - Warriors born to protect two worlds from Evil and to be the Guardians of one very special girl who will help them keep the destruction of all they know at bay. Kisaragi Girls' High School Baseball Team, Princess Nine - once again several different individuals who come together to make a team and struggle through their differences, misunderstandings and their dreams. Imperial Flower Brigade, Sakura Taisen Franchise - Different girls from different backgrounds but with one thing in common, the skills to save their country and the people who live there. And, despite, the initial rockiness of a new member, they learn to work together. Crew of the Nirvana, Vandread - In two worlds where men and women have nothing to do with each other, a pirate crew and the men that they...kidnapped, borrowed, shanghaied... and learn to work together to defeat the Evil that is consuming the Universe and heading for their respective worlds. The Dragons of Earth and The Dragons of Heaven, X - two groups with goals that are similar but take very divergant paths. One fights to protect the Earth as it is now, flaws and all. And the other seeks to destroy everything including the people so that the Earth may live. Seconding Ouran High School Host Club - Because they are wildly hilarous and down right fun. The Paper Sisters - because while one denies her "heritage" the other two never scold or look down upon her for it and support her in her decisions. |

Nominating: (can't believe these haven't been mentioned yet)
Band of the Hawk, Berserk - A near invincible group of young mercenaries composed of powerful warriors, such as the main character Guts and others, they seeking to fulfill the dream of their leader, the ingenious and charismatic Griffith. Grandis Gang, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water - A trio of jewel thieves consisting of their leader Grandis Granva and her former servants Hanson and Sanson. They start as the heroes' adversaries (think Team Rocket, only less bumbling), but soon switch sides and become their steadfast companions, often saving the day with their multipurpose versatile tank Gratan. The seven samurai, Samurai 7 - A group of seven very different samurai led by the war veteran Shimada Kambei, they have been hired to protect a farming village against raids by mechanised bandits. Supporting: The Paper Sisters, R.O.D. the TV. Black Lagoon Company, Black Lagoon franchise. Debris Section, Planetes. Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise. The very definition of the word professional and my personal pick for the winning team, though I fully expect to be disappointed when they get taken out by some magical girl outfit or moe band. Also supporting Team Dai-Gurren, Gurren Lagann, once somebody bothers to nominate them. Against: Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture (aka Genshiken), Genshiken, They are more akin to a group of friends than a team. Vote Against
Leafe Knights, Pretear - They didn't work well as a team. None of the knights seemed to understand each other IMO. In addition the whole spoiler[ switching sides of Sasame ] doesn't really bode well for them. They previously failed big at their goal and the younger and older knights don't really get along. I can't really find a set leader either. |

I'll go with some more obvious ones too:
Team Dai-Gurren/Dai-Gurren Brigade, Gurren Lagann, this team has several goals that all boil down to protecting the Earth and humans, first from the beastmen who kill any humans who come to the surface which forced humanity to stay underground, then from the anti-spirals who wish to destroy all of humanity. The Children of Befort, Fantastic Children, this team consists of 7 white haired children dressed in black with mysterious motives. As time goes on, we find out that they are trying to find a girl named Tina, from the distant planet of Greecia after they were forced to send her to be reborn on Earth, and send her soul back to Greecia. And I'm just going to let popular demand decide who doesn't get in here: The Digidestined, Digimon Adventure, Adventure 02, Tamers, Frontier, 5th season, (i apologize in advance for this) 7 young kids go to camp for the summer/ wind up living in a digital land/ where everybody gets to meet his own digimonster/ a digital companion, a digital friend/ a digimon in training, will digivolve to rookie, and digivole to champion and ultimate too/ I'm gonna save the digital world for me/ I'm gonna save the digital world for you. In every series, there is a different set of kids who must save the digital world, and often their own world almost by default. So far there have been 5 sets (although it could be debatable as to wether the first two seasons could be combined), but their goals are generally the same. Outlaw Star crew, Outlaw Star, while not officially named, the 5 crew members and the ship itself are on a journey to find out about one of their members, Melfina, while trying to not be completely broke all the time and fighting against the McDougal brothers and space pirates and anyone else who might stand in their way. Big Fire, Giant Robo, an evil organization set to destroy the world, in part by taking away the usage of the Shizuma Drive that humanity has come to depend on as their new energy source and plunge the world into darkness. The International Police Organization, Giant Robo, the good organization that is fighting against Big Fire's plot to gather the three special Shizuma Drives that would lead the world to destruction. The team consists of members with special abilities who can help the world and the giant robot known as Giant Robo. Team Earth, Oban Star Racers, the team from Earth who is participating in the racing contest set up by the Avatar for the ultimate prize. Squad 15, The Super Dimension Calvary Souther Cross/Robotech Masters Saga, a sub-division of a larger military organization, Squad 15 follows the exploits of Jeanne/Dana as they fight against the alien race trying to take over the planet known as the Zor/Robotech Masters. Gin, Hana, and Miyuki, Tokyo Godfathers, three homeless people from the streets of Tokyo, their lives forever change when they find a baby abandoned near Christmas and do everything in their power to reunite the baby with her parents. The Shinesmen, Shinesman, business men by day, and also the super sentai parody team known as the Shinesmen whenever it's called for. Most of their enemies are aliens who are also business men attempting to ruin business and do generally vague evil things. Most of their personal goals include driving a car, getting in with Turkish twins, and bringing a stuffed fish to his daughter. I'm going to try and get away with this, although I highly doubt it'll get through, but would it be possible to nominate the Aang Gang from Avatar: The Last Airbender? The obvious conflict here being that despite how anime inspired Avatar is, it's not technically anime (although I know a lot of people on these forums have seen it) 2nding (already) Debris Section If anyone beat me to typing these out, just consider anything above as 2nds. |

Seconding:
-Band of the Hawk (Berserk)- This mercenary group did enough to secure victories for the kingdom of Midland. -Ouran High School Host Club- The organization of this apparently self-absorbed school club makes for some great humor in the series. Opposing: -Dragons of Earth (X)- Unlike the Dragons of Heaven, the Dragons of Earth had no real sense of organization or structure as all the members were around for their own individual reasons. |

Oh, already thought of another one:
The Night Troops, Kekkaishi (I'm going on the manga here, not sure where the anime cuts this off), A secret group under the command of Masamori Sumimura, they do various activities that usually include tracking, hunting, and destroying ayakashi. Crew of the Esperanza, They Were 11, a group that was supposed to be 10 now numbers 11 as they enter the desolate ship called the Esperanza in order to complete their test and join the elite Cosmo Academy. This group's objective is to remain on the ship for 60 days without killing each other and while fixing the ship to prevent it getting too close to the sun and over-heating and over heating as a result, which would release a deadly pathogen upon the crew. Kaleido Stage crew, Kaleido Star series, the members of the Kaleido Stage are either in the productions put on by them, or working behind the scenes supporting them. Their main objective is to put on a good show every time for their audience. The Z Warriors/Fighters, Dragon Ball Z, any sort of world destroying enemy immediately gives this group of Earth's best fighters uncontrollable hero urges as they risk life and limb to save the world (not necessarily their world either). doesn't Shugo Chara have some sort of school council? Someone who has seen more could probably make an argument, I've only read the first two volumes of the manga. |
