Mothers! Don't let your babies grow up to be anime figure collectors.

Maybe he doing it in sign of respect. Isn't that a ritual thing in Japan? Burn things in ceremony?

Isn't that cremation? And if so, just what kind of ritual ceremony was this?

I could come up with a suggested, sarcastic death more memorable to the Gundam canon, but, for the life of me, I just don't watch that much of Gundam.

A 29 year old man living with his mother.
What, no shocking twist at the end of this story?
So much for expecting a sequel.

It didn't say that. The article mentioned that the home was his, not his mother's. Yes, she could be living with him, but it isn't a fact. I got the impression that his mother had come round to do some cleaning (as mothers do) and had thrown out his "silly toys", not knowing how much he valued them. If they lived together then she would probably have had a better grasp of how much they meant to him.
Anyway, the point is not about his mother, it is about him. Him and his disturbed mind. I mean, if my mother came round and threw out my DVDs I would be pissed off. But I wouldn't burn my flat down. This guy doesn't deserve to be arrested, he deserves to be committed (to an asylum).

My post was sarcasm against the all-too-typical stereotype often associated with the mother-son issues at home.
But I guess the "sequel" reference was lost.
*sigh*
Failed again.
Note: It's not uncommon for Japanese children to have their parents living with them. We Americans often don't recognize this as being common, since we often toss our parents into nursing homes.
But without this knowledge, I can see how my post was overlooked as sarcasm.

I also got the impression that he was living with his mother.
Doing something incredibly immature as to throw a temper tantrum and want to kill himself and burn his house down suggests his position. Wanting to set fire to the house was an additional action against his mother, as if he's trying to get back at her.
Dude needs to grow up and learn to be a man.

I think SGT. FROG (KERORO GUNSOU) would be a more appropriate reference--it really sounds like something right out of KERORO(especially the son's impulsive, vengeful, self-destructive anger) with son/mother replacing Keroro/Natsumi.

Damn, that's a big house to be getting rid of. Especially in Japan.
