All I can remember is that it was made in America and aired on MTV. I think it was made my the same guy that created Reign the Conqueror. Peter Chung or something like that (or maybe he drew it, I can't remember.)
Anyway, I can also say I didn't like Aeon Flux that much either. Weird character design and animation, and not a very good story from what I remember. Sorry, that's all I have right now... |

Aeon Flux is a spy story about a female super-agent. Currently running on MTV2 on Friday evenings at 9 p.m. eastern. It's not really anime because it was made in the USA, although it's considered anime-related. Bizarre character designs by Peter Chung. It's been a while since I saw it, but the storyline was very hard to follow and ultimately didn't seem to really get anywhere. I didn't like it.

Aeon Flux RAWKS. It manages to be a hyperkinetic mood piece, of all things. I didn't like it when it first aired, because I found it so unsettling. Now I revere it for the same reason.

It was part of the "anime is not kids animation, and Aeon Flux isn't for kids so it's gotta be anime!" mainstream phase.. which thankfully ended shortly after Power Puff Girls came out (does anyone recall the threads on raam suggesting that "Power Puff Girls" should be considered anime? Heh..) Of course, my younger brother watched it when he was in 5th-6th grade, so maybe it was for kids. ;p We include it as "related" because it's by the same director... I don't think there's any reason other than that. Kinda like how we include Osamu Tezuka's experimenetal animation in the encyclopedia (Jumping, Broken Down Film, etc) even though they really wouldn't fit anyone's mainstream perception of "anime".. and even though we exclude dozens (if not hundreds?) of other independent works animated by Japanese artists. In the end, it's just an arbitrary decision that keeps one title in, and dozens of other titles out.. |

Jumping and Broken Down Film are well worth tracking down; I saw them on Showtime once, then on a videotape documentary about international animation. |

Aeon Flux should never be catagorized as Anime. The concept is lame and Peter Chung blows period! How he got to do another lame ass series like Reign and 2 segments from Animatrix is beyond my comprehension.
No talent whatsoever, but extremely lucky..at least for now. Another reason to hate MTV folks. |

He only did one Animatrix short, that being Matriculated. Anyway, I'm very...critical of Aeon Flux. It seems like an idea that was at one time a decent concept, but the actual execution became dragged down by needless "symbolism to pretend we're being deep" and outright hideous designs. Animatrix suffered the same fate. Reign did too, to a degree, though Chung's role in that series' creation was limited strictly to character design. It at least had gorgeous scenery, decent battle scenes, and a nice plot spoiler[up until Persia fell (after which it went downhill quick...like a near-vertical drop).] |

So, it's safe to say Chung is like the Wachowski brothers of Anime?

No, because Chung has a unique style, instead of shamelessly stealing from a bunch of other (better) sources. Which is about the only thing the Wachowski's know how to do.

Well since the term anime in Japan is used for any animated series, no matter where it comes from, then, technically speaking of course, PPG and Aeon Flux both are. But of course, I prefer to not be technical about things like that. |

Well... I have to disagree somewhat. I personally think Aeon Flux ranks in top 5 of serious animated science fiction, hands down. And I really would like to see a decent DVD release of at least the ten ~20 minute episodes.
Yes, the series definitely sometimes is pretentious as hell (hopefully I chose the word right, not a native speaker here) and tries to be "deep" so damn hard that it hurts. But when you have episodes like Last Time for Everything, Chronophasia and End Sinister that have absolutely kick ass, well thought plots, I wouldn't complain too much. Besides, with all the weirdness going on the series has an unique feel to it (depending on the episode, though) and simply oozes the "sense of wonder" we scifi readers like to talk about. Visually it's nothing special - ok, visually it is downright plain - but it really isn't the main point of the series. The design of the visual side is actually quite good, from characters to the world in general. People feel like insects most of the time... Aeon Flux definitely isn't for everyone, it is something of an acquired taste, but I'd recommend anyone who has interest in science fiction animation to at least check it out. -Juha |

You got a point there. Didn't they steal like a ton of ideas from The Invisables? |
