The Otaku Encyclopedia: An Insiders Guide to the Subculture of Cool Japan (Paperback) by Patrick W. Galbraith (Author), Frederik Schodt (Foreword):
Coming out first in the UK then in the US, amazing! I have emailed ANN many times with news items - never know whether they even get there .... none result in timely news items so I guess not. Therefore this. I DID make both general & forum searches & could not find any reference to this. Also the Community Forum is locked - maybe it's in there, for special readers only. Amazon UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Otaku-Encyclopedia-Insiders-Guide-Subculture/dp/4770031017/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1244874793&sr=8-1 Amazon US: http://www.amazon.com/Otaku-Encyclopedia-Insiders-Guide-Subculture/dp/4770031017/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1244875016&sr=1-1 Danny Choo On the Release Party in Japan - funny guy! http://www.dannychoo.com/detail/mac/eng/image/20233/Kodansha+International.html And his take on it (complete with dolls as usual): http://www.dannychoo.com/adp/eng/1714/Otaku+Encyclopedia.html With best wishes, having pre-ordered it, Nico M |

I have mixed feelings about this sort of thing. I'd fathom that simply being an active member of an anime discussion forum eventually teaches one the encyclopaedic terms that apply to one's fandom without the need for secondary literature. Naturally, precise definitions are arguable, but in the case of nuanced terms such as moe, one can validly use them simply by being aware of some of the shows which they are used to describe, regardless of whether one's understanding of such terminology is encyclopaedic.
This being the case, I'll pass on this book for the time being. I'd rather put aside the money for my next DVD purchase. |
