Well I'll leave this up to someone else that's more into sports anime to answer, but off the top of my head I can think of:

Princess Nine - baseball, specifically a girls baseball team. It's very good in my opinion (26 eps)

Prince of Tennis - involves tennis naturally, I haven't seen this series yet. It's also a very long series (117 eps)

Initial D - street racing, I haven't seen much of it. (26 eps), after Initial D you have Initial D - second stage (13 eps), third stage (movie) , fourth stage (14), and extra stage (2 eps). There is also the Battle Stage OVA, which is all the races from Initial D, Initial D second stage, and third stage. It features only the races, nothing else.

What? NO Hajime no Ippo on that list mentioned yet?

I think Ippo is my favorite sports series overall, and it's coming out on DVD here for R1 soon. (boxing)

There are (arguably) other types that might qualify in the sports category simply because there is no other place to put them. Almost all sports anime involve personal growth through competition against others. That's why something like Hikaru no Go, which surrounds a board game, is often linked with the sports genre. IIRC, Tempest has his own ideas about HNG and Initial D not being sports anime, but if they aren't, I don't know what category he'd put them in, considering the content.

Ah… Captain Tsubasa (soccer), one of my favourites. Only seen it back when I was a mere child under the name “Super Campeones” on some Spanish network, but I loved every minute of it. I’m currently watching a few (subtitled) episodes every so often.

By the way, “Captain Tsubasa 2001” and “Captain Tsubasa: Road to 2002” are both the same, just in case there’s some confusion.

I was about to mention it, but you beat me to it.
From the Geneon trailer that I saw, Ippo looks promising the said character’s "Stick & moves" were handled well with painstakingly detail and fluidity. Not too mention that the eccentric theme song caught my attention as well. I’ll be sure to check this one out. Wink

It's only akward when you watch it with the two American Porn Stars who do all the moaning and groaning in the dubbed version. But it's still got the funniest storyline on how they're supposed to win this Vollyball tournement against a rival school.
If you like the pornographic anime that doesn't show penetration, I'd watch it just because it's so hilarious Anime smile

well even though I'm not a fan of Ping Pong club...it certainly is "unique"

and remember ping pong is a lot more popular in Asia than in the US so if they make anime on past-times like baseball and soccer ping pong would seem to fit in too.

Now if only we can get some real football (not soccer) anime. But then again, the japanese don't play football.

There should also be a Sumo Anime (not like the one on foxbox). That'll be great.

yeah I found a list just like the one above at www.bestanime.com and Isn't Ayane's High Kick or whatever its called about a girl boxer or something?? And what about all the racing shows...i consider them a sport so please help out there..lol...heres what I know of

All Initial D series, ovas, movies
Monkey Turn (all about speedboat racing...hope this gets licensed soon)
Speed Racer
F-zero
EX-Driver

I just find it funny how they can make simple sports like soccer and make them all cool with anime. I suppose the soccer animes have closeups of socceballs speeding through the air and stuff too look cool. lol

Folks who mentioned the racing anime forgot a couple.

For starters, you've got the Shakoten Boogie OAV's (a good companion to Wangan Midnight manga), the Over Rev OAV's, and I believe the Akai Pegasus manga may have been animated at one time.

None of these are licensed yet, though. Sad

Ew. I've (regrettibly) seen the cover to those types of hentai. The ones with the really ugly american porn stars on the front? Yeah. =/

It does sound funny though. Can't promise I would give it a check, but maybe sometime (when I'm REALLY bored. =P)
