Hey all. I was talking with one of my good buddies and he was reading an article that Suncoast was going to be removing some titles from their shelves because they were far too mature. Some of the titles that were to be removed where Berserk, La Blue Girl and some others. When the press wanted a statement, Suncoast officials were un-available for comment.
I guess when I heard this I was kind of stupified by it all. I mean Suncoast sells Porno on their shelves, and they took this stuff off of the shelves because the parents complained. My question is why target anime? Some may say because cartoons are for kid, and anime is a cartoon. Well to be honest, video games were originally for kids too, but look at games like grand theft auto, and streets of LA. These are not for kids, and parents complain about them every day and pretty much nothing is being done about them. I just don't see any purpose in this move. Anyone have any theories that they would like to throw out into the frey?

The thing is a lot of people have problems with animated porn and erotic comics. Be those people in the minority or the majority, stores tend to listen to what people say if they think it'll hurt business (just look at the way Walmart bows down to bible thumping soccer moms all the time). To us it's no big deal, but to others it is. I guess that just goes to show how far we have to go.

(edit: Oh, and here's a previous article and comments on this.)

Because many a parent has bought their 4 year old La Blue Girl

It USED to be that they would slap "must be 18 to buy" stickers on every anime tape they had. The real question is how profitable those H DVDs are in relation to the comlaint level. It could be they're more interested in having the shelf space for something else.

ah sweet, thanks for pointing that article our for me Emerje. I guess it just kind of makes me mad that they are doing this because where I live Suncoast is about the only place to buy anime, and berserk was going to be one of my next buys. Oh well though, I suppose that I'll survive.

Well you may not be able to get it at a b&m, but you can always buy it online. Deep
Discount DVD
has the Berserk individual dvds for $17.98 or the boxset for $83.98

because Berserk (despite how being utterly great it is) is stupendously violent, contains the occoult, rape, children as sex slaves, homosexuality, deamons and what not. Not exactly "your-average-consumer-friendly" product.

It's Suncoast. The 7-11 of video stores. Yeah, it sucks. It sucks that they don't carry Cannibal Holocaust, either. Don't like it? Shop at an independant store instead.

BTW, Suncoast will still special order 18+ anime and manga. Also, in case it wasn't clear it was the Berserk manga that was pulled from the shelf not the anime.

The thing is, the prono that Suncoast sells is soft, as to La Blue Girl is pretty much hard. The many I have been to, they sell most video that came from Playboy and Penthouse, which are pretty soft, while you got DVD from Anime 18, which are mostly hard.

Wow...I guess I didn't that about La Blue Girl. I just knew it was hentai and that's about all. And thank you to the person who pointed out that the Berserk Manga is being pulled, and not the anime, that makes me happy. As for independant stores go, my small city does not have any. I live in South Dakota, and although I'm no ashamed to live here, it's hard to get things like anime and manga. Oh well though, at least there is still the internet Wink

It makes no difference to me since i don't shop for my Anime there. their prices are way too high, compared to Deep/Anime discount dvd and even Best Buy. (which sells practically anything!!) And if there's one thing i despise is a bunch of focus groups comprised from "soccer moms" and christian right-wing "moralists" who are so quick to ban, censor or form a boycott against media material that they find objectionable.
And retail chains I.E. Walmart (ugh, what's with the lame rollbackman commercials?!?) are so quick to give in to pressure from the aforementioned groups.

IRC, this is America, not the taliban. Mad

I think that it doesn't matter to me one bit. I dont buy Suncoast anymore because money doesn't grow on trees. Wink

I could care less what happens to Suncoast's anime stock. That just means less competition for the people I buy from.

They have a problem with porn in general. The real problem is that not all stores are careful to seperate it out. Remember people, if you need to watch porn, get porn with real people instead. At least there is a remote chance of you actually getting to go with them, and celluloid and paper can cause major damage.

Actualyy it's WalMart dictating to the soccer moms. The entire owners and boards of WM are bible-thumping evangelicals who make pre-emptive descisions as to what they will or will not carry.

Well the porno that they have for sale, is of the softcore genre.
Not that I've ever bought one myself, but by just looking at the cover you can tell it's gonna be ****. I can sort of agree to remove La Blue Girl from the shelves, because that is some pretty hardcore hentai. But the titles like Berserk shouldn't even be concidered to be removed. And if the parents complain so much about their children LOOKING at these boxes, all the store has to do is move the hentai titles to the adult section and the problem is solved.

And it's interesting you made refrences to violent video games that are out which all children play, no matter what the age rating is. Personally, I think it's the parents way to pick and choose their battles and since they can't do crap about the video games, they're just looking for their next target they think NO ONES children should see.

It's a crazy world we live in these days, but for the rest of us anime junkies, we shouldn't be too upset. It's not like Suncoast is the ONLY place to get these titles, just look around and you're bound to find them in the same mall probably Anime smile
