The authentic Japanese Godzilla is getting its first U.S. theatrical release. This NPR story is of interest to anime fans; it talks about how, decades before Carl Macek, American distributors reworked Japanese entertainment for western audiences. It also says some interesting things about the intentional unrealism of Japanese monster movie effects.

Americans have a long history of ruining foreign cinema, in an attempt to appeal to a mainstream that doesn't want to watch it anyway. Look at all the butchered films from Miramax, it's the rare piece that escapes unscathed. Sure Shaolin Soccer is subtitled, which was a shocker, but it's missing 20 minutes and has a whole bunch of unnecessary songs added in.
This is one of the primary reasons why all dubbing and alteration of people's work must stop. It's not your property, DON'T TOUCH IT. |

I was hoping Godzilla would make it to the Detroit area, since we have a fair number of theaters that show indie movies.

Whedon: More like dub-titled.
From what I heard, the Raymond Burr Godzilla actually did well in Japan, because Perry Mason was popular over there. |

People in America apparently wanted to watch Godzilla, but anyway. |

People in America want to watch Godzilla without the inconvenience of subtitles. Well that's what people have been saying for years, but this print's been a hit at arthouses.

Of course it has. It's Toho who's blocked the release of Godzilla subtitled all these years, fearing cheap imports would sabotage their overpriced (6800 yen a POP, and that's NO extras. Typical J-movie is 1000-2500 yen cheaper) domestic releases. Criterion was about to release an LD about 10 years ago which was licensed from the US rights holders, but at the last minute scuttled. |

Tomorrow as I write this the NPR show Fresh Air is going to interview somebody who wrote a book about Godzilla.

Toho's admittedly greedy, but they did have some concern over how the original film would be received by American audiences, since it condemned nuclear weapons testing.

It's the American way to show how much better we are with special effects and thinking we know how to please our audiences. Is it stuffy in here, or is it our US ego

Godzilla certainly isn't dubtitled. Since only a few test audiences have heard the Shaolin Soccer dub, I can't say for sure whether it is or isn't.

Someone I know who speaks Chinese told me it's dub-titled.

I'll watch it so long as Matthew Broderick is nowhere within range of a 7.65mm round.
Ohio's concealed carry law should be put to good use, right? |
