Glad I got my copy in the mail today.
I heard they had to do a second printing, because of unforeseen sales, so that's when I ordered.

Honestly im a little surprised that it didn't do as well or
better than state side. Pretty sure too that it is still
as much of a cult classic for them as it is for NA.
Though i can understand, since they are paying twice
as much as we would be paying, even with amazon.jp's
discount prices. Even so with hardcore fans it shouldn't be
that much of an issue.

Given today's taste in anime, I'd say 10,000 units is a pretty good number in Japan. This is an over 20 yo title we're talking about.

Not to mention very few titles can even sell over 10K in DVD format, let alone Blu-Ray. Blu-ray wise, Macross F is probably the only one that could top this at the moment. Eva 1.10 will most likely do the same when it comes out though

It probably would do better, if more people owned BD, but no one wants to pony up for it until they know it's actually worth it, which is why Sony's selling the Oshii Sky Crawlers separately.

Congrats to Akira, the quality made it well worth the buy! I just hope Funimation releases Eva 1.0 on BD too.

I hope that this is a sign of the possibilities of anime in the US. Near simultaneous releases rather than one that's like 2 years aftwerwards can get you more than sales abroad than you get at home.

I'm pretty sure that's more than the DVD sold in the US.

I think Akira is more of a cult classic in America than Japan. It opened American eyes what Japanese animation is technically capable of.
