I'm really getting disappointed in a website that I used to frequent more often since it was sold to a conglomerate. Initials of said-place -- AOD.

The quality has dipped, the new frontend layout is harder to navigate, and there are fewer reviews on this site and next to no plot descriptions for upcoming releases! The site is increasingly looking like it's been abandoned and the situation is getting sadder, IMHO.

IS there another website that has quality reviews of as many releases as humanly possible that are not dependent on people having the latest, greatest A/V setups and which actually update new week releases with plot synopses? That seems to be something easy to ask for but there's a heck of a lot of elitism floating around some sites and not much common sense in the face of a declining market...

Ever heard of this site? It gives listings of reviews, though you have to click on a series to see which sites have reviewed it.

I'll look at that site.

Thanks!

Elfen, that WAS funny but I'm afraid they just don't do enough reviews around here to be very helpful to me. I buy a lot of stuff and I like to know about what's been released in the last month, not something that came out 3 months ago, or even over a year ago!

I'm not knocking ANN as a site in general, but reviews of new material are not its strength.

Darn it, I really wanted to use that joke. I guess the early bird catches the worm.

The late reviews for Anime here at ANN doesn't affect me as I live in New Zealand. We are the last to get almost everything, the sunrise and the Lord of the Rings trilogy excepted.

Basically, when the reviews are just coming out for North America, the DVDs haven't even got here yet. So I don't mind the timing of the reviews here at all. They only serve to get me interested in series before I see them here, allowing me to plan my buying schedule ahead of schedule. Haha.

That's my two cents.

I'm still looking for some good previews/reviews of the Winter 09 season. There are a bunch of shows already out and I haven't seen any coverage of them on ANN like they did for the fall line-up.

Oh okay I see GeorgeC... but still, you should use this site too, theire reviews are good, and plenty, but yeah. Yeah the one that Unit showed you, i was gonna show that one because it is good, even though i do perfer this site over the others, so yeah, you should use both at once you know, that's always useful. Afterall, more than one review, can provide more than one perspective into a show, which is always helpful.

You should try living here..
I'm still putting off importing the remaining Lucky Star LEs in the hope they will be released here (I refuse to buy this series three times as I did Haruhi), but eventually the boxes will run out so it is a gamble.

I'm in Britain too, so I can't help but wonder... Why'd you buy it three times? I just imported the LE and called it done. Smile
I'm guessing that you bought it once for the original US LE release... Once for the local LE release... And the other?

Well, I'm sure Konata would approve of that kind of collecting anyway. Laughing

Yeah i was iffy in posting that, i wans't sure if he meant here or not.. but either way, it still stands in y opinion that this place is bueno. I think this place is really good for this type of thing. Theres a site called Anime-Source.com or something i've heard about from my friend who sorta watches anime, but i dont' really check it, i just konw it has very detailed reviews of selected anime, and then just random reviews by people like you and me meaning that they're not given the job as reviewer... they just say how they liked the show and follow a general format of the review... but again, i'd vote this place over there in an instant.

Oh, you mentioned AOD, right? My snark with them isn't that they sold out, it's that they rarely ever give a review specifically of an anime's dub -- which is a big factor for a dubophile like me in deciding whether a show is worth it (if it's a talky show and has a middling dub I'll probably avoid it, for example).

Elfen and Yawny,

I'm pretty sure The website GrorgeC is complaining about is Anime on DVD. It was recently bought by and incorporated into mania.com (basically an IGN wannabe), thus the dip in quality and content.

Ohoni,

I don't know of any website that does in depth looks at what is currently playing in Japan, except for some blogs, and they have to pick and choose what they can cover. Probably your best bet is to check anime blog aggregators like animenano.

I imported the R2 LEs as not only have I been importing every Kyoani series since AIR, it's also a Hirano Aya series to boot. I imported the R1s for the dubs and subs, the box and the pack-ins. I then got the R2Es as I never expected an extras-packed release in the UK and I wanted to support it - plus I have friends without multi-region players.

ANN has stated they are only doing those for Spring and Fall, since Winter and Summer are sort of off-seasons in Japan for anime and unlikely to produce big hits.

But hands-down the best Winter 2009 preview is found at http://hashihime.blogspot.com/2008/12/39-new-winter-anime-full-previews-staff.html None of the others even compare.

There are a couple other decent ones that have some staff and cast information and some background/tie-in data. You just need to Google. But most of them are just fanboy sites whose comments consist of "lulz" and "fail".
