Just going to repost what I said over at Mania's Anime/Manga forums (god, that doesn't sound right to say...):

Someone posted this over on ToonZone and from looking at the schedule, seems that from March 16th and on, Rave Master will be taking the midnight slots and airing. Seems double Gurren Lagann is also making it's return to the Sci-fi channel as well.

Everything up to this point, has atleast fit the network to some extent. Rave Master, with it's current dub... I honestly can't figure out why Scifi channel is airing it. Heck, I thought the rights with TokyoPop lapsed, to be quite honest.

In any case, hopefully this will open the gates to other series outside of Bandai and Manga's series...

I'll be skipping on GL, because I'm following that one on DVD instead. But what's the problem with the Rave Master dub? Is it a hack job?

I still refer to it as "AoD", though it's obviously not the same as before.

This is disappointing. I tried watching Rave Masters and hated it. I'm hoping they're just doing this until they find something new to put up there. Sci-Fi had a really good run airing allot of awesome stuff. But now they're throwing Rave Masters in there, it's just sad. Why can't they just re air Noein or show the Ghost in the Shell movie again. That would be great. They've shown a whole bunch of Manga stuff, why not show all of it?

Somewhat. The dub was toned down to younger boys and had some terrible dialogue to go with it at times. There were also some bizzare edits and cuts to go along with it. Honestly, even if it has an uncut dub, it still seems somewhat of a risky move to show it on Scifi Channel, simply because compared to just about everything else that Scifi has aired, this is rather tame.

Rave Master on Ani-Monday? I thought all the anime on the block was anything from Bandai or Manga Entertainment. Confused

I disagree. I have seen most of Rave Master when it was aired elsewhere (was it CN that aired it before? Toon Disney? I forget now) but missed the end, if it aired. Or maybe if it finished, maybe the anime itself ended in a way that left one hanging, I never checked around to find out for sure.
Anyway, I don't see this as more "tame" than say Noein.
Completely different to be sure. While I can't say I loved it, I was finding it interesting enough to watch, and I'd be interested in seeing the parts I missed. Nothing I'd rent, but most of what they have put on SciFi is in that category.

CN originally aired Rave Master on Toonami. From what I hear, CN had aired the entire series. Since the manga to the series was ongoing during its original run in Japan, it lacked an ending.

I saw most of it on CN, and I don't recall anything egregious- IIRC early on a cranky old man was getting drunk on tea, and the OP/EDs were either replaced or rewritten in English. There may have been some covered titties, too, but that's what DLsite is for. If anything, when Rear Admiral and his Big Butt Bandits busted out their Super-Combo Triple Fart attack, I wished for some more editing.

(That was also the last episode aired before the series moved to the graveyard shift. Gee, I wonder why?)

Mind you, you may not get a bankable answer around here. A goodly number of otaku will bash any changes just to prove they aren't taken in by the EEEEEEEEVIL U.S. anime industry, and I myself am biased because I hate those guys.

In all seriousness though, the major problem with Rave Master is that it's a resoundingly mediocre fantasy series in the vein of jRPGs of the mid-90s. It's watchable enough, if you can get into it, but it suffers an extreme lack of originality and some rather bland characterizations. It is however, better than a lot of the third-rate shonen drek and toynime that was airing at the time, like the slow and overblown Yu-Gi-Oh, the excrable Dual Masters, or the tedious D.I.C.E.. Give it a shot if Blue Dragon isn't enough to satisfy your fantasy fix- you can always just change the channel if you don't like it.

Well, it's far from the strangest scheduling move I've ever seen. I remember when Toonami was airing Hamtaro, which even Tom couldn't take seriously on the block. You're right in that I'd rather see them air something like the criminally underrated Heat Guy J, or perhaps the R.O.D. series that goes with the OVA they showed a while back. But hey, if wishes were fishes...

But on the other hand, maybe they have a good reason. Like, they're not sure when they'll have the second season of Gundam 00, and they don't want us to get attached to a new series, then have us bitch at them when G00 comes back.

From reading the 2 DVD reviews on this site, it sounds like Rave Master's dub wasn't a complete abomination, but it was still pretty cheezy and toned down. Also, they completely changed all the music from the show.

Considering the show is already apparently fairly generic... well, not a good thing. Still, the first DVD managed to get a C rating from Carlo, so it can't be as bad as some of the stuff Sci-Fi has aired. Still seems an odd choice though.

Rave Master on Sci fi???? first of all,it does'nt seem the type of show to air on Sci fi,I remember seeing this on toonami years ago,the manga was good, but the anime version sucked because it ended up going into fillers after the"King arc"

I think that Sci-Fi should dip back into the Gundam franchise. I'd like to see some more Gudam. I mean, the last time I saw a Gundam on tv (besides 00) would have to be when toonami aired Gundam Seed back in 04. We need more Gundam on tv! They could also do more of the Manga stuff. You don't see manga getting much air time so it's good when it does (aside from some of their properties like Tokko and Descendents of Darkness)

A question for y'all -- this seems like a really mediocre series even without the 4Kids-caliber butchery. No wonder it never got a full series release on DVD...it might have sold that poorly, I imagine.

Err, right, the question. The manga at least passable/better in comparison? Or is the franchise a total "pass" altogether? My only real interest in it is the fantasy elements, really. Also, "Rave Master" makes it sound like the series has to do with dancing or some crap like that. Couldn't they have picked a better title for the US? Confused

I read a few volumes of the manga, it's pretty fun, but extremely shounen to the core and doesn't take itself too seriously. Still, not something that really jives well with what Sci-Fi had been showing, this one is definitely aimed at children and tweens.

If they use the exact same dub, that will be a very weird choice to air on Scifi since that dub was clearly aimed at kids and pretty bad in some respects.

If they were going to pick up a former CN dub, I'd figure they'd go for something like Zoids or maybe one of the older Gundam shows like the 0083: Stardust Memory or 0080: War in my Pocket.

Yes, that's what I'm talking about, more Gundam. I really liked seeing 00 after not seeing a single Gundam for the past 4 years or so. It was refreshing and I was hoping for more.

Also, couldn't Sci-Fi at least try to get an anime that's actually SCI-FI. I think it might fit a bit better. I'd say Rave Master is more of a fantasy fighting series. It doesn't fit.
