Yawara!!! Yessssssssssssss. I've been waiting and waiting for this set to come out. I couldn't agree with the review more; they just don't make 'em like this anymore.

Was this a new release or and older license re-release? I do like the idea of older shows coming out in boxsets, even if they have to fore go a dub, but I just checked the price on Rightstuf, rather steep.

AnimEigo did some contest about three or so years back - like "A Show You'd Never Believe We'd License" or something like that and Yawara was the show selected and that they pursued the rights for. Then they took preorders and said they'd set the price based on how many preorders they received.

I'm so glad to see Yawara get a positive review. I loved this show ever since I found the video tapes in Tsutaya in 2004. Glad I can own the DVD here in the US thanks to AnimEigo.

Oh man, what would have happened if Legend of the Galactic Heroes was pulled?

This series would've completely slipped under my radar if it weren't for this review. I'm a sucker for old school anime, and from reading the description, I know this one will fill me with nostalgia since the humor and the style seem similar to the anime that I loved back when I was a kid.

Same as before, some years ago, when someone tried if enough buyers would pay $2000 each to bring all 110 OVAs of LoGH. Laughing

I remember watching fansubs of Yawara a decade ago. It was coming out so slow, and with more than a hundred eps... No chance it'd catch on like Ranma 1/2 (also with more than a hundred eps), even though Yawara was rating more than Ranma 1/2 back when both were airing on Japan (probably the real Yawara-chan helped). But the 1992 Sydney Olympics is way over now, and even Yawara-chan has her own little Yawara-chan. Judo is not what it once was.

I would like to buy this series but the price is way to steep for a sub only set.

Hey, I like AnimEigo's multi-colored subtitles! The footnotes are a bit much, though. That's what liner notes (printed or on disc) are for.

Anyway, watched the first 40 episodes dubbed in Tagalog. Wonder if it's related to AnimEigo also releasing the first forty in one set. Need to save up my birthday money next month to buy this baby.

Excellent review. They certainly don't make them like this anymore. I've been watching both my Yawara set and Maison Ikkouku lately, and there's something so refreshing about female characters like Yawara or Kyoko who come across as real *people*, not slotted into particular fetish zones first and other personality feeling like an afterthought.

Even before that, back when they did the pre-order thing for the first time with Kimagure Orange Road (for the LD's, I think?), they did a survey at Otakon about what other series should get the same treatment. Yawara was my choice in that survey, and I've been eagerly awaiting this set ever since. Smile

I just hope it doesn't take them another 3+ years to do the next batch of episodes.

Only a handful of people would have bought it and then those few hardcore fans would keep showing it to people so they could see how awesome it is.

I would have been one of those few Anime cry

I didn't know much about Yawara! when I pre-ordred it, but I figured it had to be pretty great if Animeigo was investing so much time and love into it. I was not disappointed. The characterization is fantastic as well as the story.

Quote:
At the risk of sounding like an old curmudgeon, they just don't make them like this any more. That isn't to imply that the quality of anime is declining—I'm not stupid enough to believe that—it's just that it often feels as if shows are trying so hard to carve up the viewership pie that they have forgotten the drawing power of a simple story told well.

Couldn't agree with you more!!!

BTW- I emailed Animeigo last fall and asked them if they would continue to release the rest of the series. They graciously emailed me back and said to watch for an important announcement after the New Year. So for those of you who were worried, it looks like they'll continue to release the series. (Thank goodness!!!)

For those of you who think the set is too expensive please consider that it is 40 episodes. If this was released on single discs it would cost much more.

I'm ready for the next box.

Everyone, join me in a big "FINALLY!!"

Seriously, why wasn't this released ages ago? Yawara! is wonderful; even though it's nothing like his other work, you can see Urasawa Naoki's touch of genius in it.

And maybe now this will prompt someone to license and release the manga, too. 'Cause if not, the moment I get to Japan, I am buying every last volume and just reading it in the original.

Oooh, I've wanted a look at this one! Must have!

Of course, I'd love to say that, but the only box set I could find available goes for over 130 smackers. I guess I'll wait till something cheaper comes up ._.

I'm hoping that Viz might consider it after they release 20th Century Boys...
