I didn't paticulary like it, I thought it was good though but just didn't appeal to me, I thought it was a little slow paced IMHO.

It's one of my favorites. It's rather sad though...

I really liked the series, but I loaned it to a friend and he thought it was boring. The character intro shows (1-5) are laking in action and story advancement, but they set up an excellent world. By the end of the second disk I was completely hooked.

The 13 episode series has really become my favorite format in large part due to Haibane Renmei and Saikano. It allows a lot of focus on character and setting and still provides enough material for a satisfying story.

Obvoiusly I like the series,

The first disk is a little slow as it sets up the world and introduces you to the characters. It's facinating because both of these are very distincive.
Disks 2, 3, and especially 4 are the guts of the series. It is extremely well written and has the best ending of any series I've seen.
It is a very skillfully done show that takes on some of the BIG questions without being overbearing or letting the characters be overwhelmed by the plot.
However, the "action" is mostly emotional rather then violent. If that isn't to your taste or you like your shows on the light and fluffy side you might want to watch something else.

All the best,

Nani?

Haibane Renmei could quite possibly be my most favourite anime title to date. It's a wonderful show with lovable characters, a deep, emotional story, an excellent soundtrack, and simple, yet beautiful visuals. It's a little slow, yes, but I never found it to be a problem. I began to care for the characters right away; they were believable, likeable, and the emotions they felt were incredibly well-executed. I have to admit the final episode had me in tears the whole way through...

There were several episodes in this series that I cried while watching. The finale especially. But, then I'm a big old sap for sad anime - I've even cried a couple times watching Sailor Moon. Smile

I finished HR about 1 week ago. Now how can I say it... It was pretty slow and boring first 7-8 episodes but pretty exciting last 9-13. Its very character driven drama series. Supperb picture and sounds/music. Its probably either love it or hate it situation with HR. I recommend to rent or watch first few eps somewhere before buying it.

I think that overall it's a masterpiece. I loved the way that the world was shown and left the outside world as a mystery. It was visually stunning with the music complimenting it perfectly. The storyline as a whole (I felt) was properly paced and written in a way that truly made you understand Abe's vison.

If you don't care about the characters, it won't have the desired impact on you. I just never found Kuu's character that appealing, so as the events transpired regarding her, I just didn't have the emotional experiences others might have had. That may be the series only fault, but it's hardly important compared to the big picture.

I pretty much second Nagisa, who said everything I would have. It's definitely in my top 5 anime and is especially appropriate for late December/early January when those of us in the western world are reevaluating our past year (and in certain watershed years, our whole lives). Quiet but never, ever dull. Perfect for when you want something a little calmer than the usual anime.

Yup, I'll 3rd the vote On Masterpiece and top 5 all time title.

The action is pretty non-existant, but the story is not about the trivials of the world they live in. Its seems like a purgatory, where each character has to come to terms with one thing before they can 'move on'.

The animation is nice, as is the soundtrack, but the gleaming, shining star of this series is the great depth and 'realness' of its characters. Its a fantastic piece.

I voted it Masterpiece, and it really is something. It's rather unique compared to other anime, and well, it's one of those shows where you can connect to the characters to much that it hurts. That last episode really got me crying... but then again I'm a whimp...

Just my two cents--

It came highly recommended, as is obvious from some of the posts, .... I only watche the first disc. It __was__ good in a character driven sort of way..... but it was also awfully slow. I just didn't get hooked enough to go run out and get the second disc. I'll probably get around to renting the second disc later, but I figure after I give a show 2 hours of my time, if it hasn't hooked me yet, I have better things to do. This one was on the border of that sort of opinion, after the first disc. I like character driven stuff, I just simply wanted a little more to happen in the first few hours.

Still, probably worth checking out. It was far better than most stuff I've seen.

I thought it was very well done. I liked it from the outset. Like everyone else has said, it can be a bit slow, so if you are looking for action, then look elsewhere. Further, the music is awesome.

Not really a spoiler, but spoiler[my only gripe is that I just wish they had explained what the heck the Haibane, and that whole world is. I mean, is it some kind of purgatory, or something? Then again, perhaps the mystery is part of what makes the show interesting. ]

I'm a huge fan of Yoshitoshi ABe's work, so it was pretty much a no-brainer that I'd like this one. Like most of his stuff, it's slow, slow, slow, and mostly character driven. I thought the series was great... it was really well paced, and had a great ending, as well as a great, slow ride to get there.

Highly recommended. I've never given any series a Masterpiece, but this comes real close....
