Erm, so what about all those porn magazines that apparently get delivered "in plain covers"? Or is that not done anymore? Does that mean they fall under the "artistic value" umbrella?
So what's the age of consent in Iowa ? Because I can think of quite a few Licenced yaoi titles that ship freely around the US and show explicit sex with 16 & 17 y olds.
Commercial taboo maybe - because it's ugly. Remember yaoi is written to appeal to women - can't have hairy legs, etc all over the place after all Actually, that statement is probably meant to apply to the particular manga in question - the hairless thing is by no means universal. Good point. I can lend you an AK-47, so how about we go shoot up the capitol building before it happens? I'm just saying, the slope slips in both directions. In ALL directions, actually... it's like the weird reverse of that terrain that occupied the space between grandpa's childhood home and the local school- the one that was uphill both ways, you remember...? |

Didn't know Gaiman was into yaoi, but then I'm sure he's had enough childhood cracks at his last name. [Huh, huh, he said "crack", huh huh! ] Anyway, it's obviously the gay sex that's upsetting them, not the fact that it's "minors", or they'd be going after the loli stuff like the other states. Ta-kun: Huh, huh, you said "flame", huh, huh. Anyway, if they arrested you for a copy of Tenjho Tenge, then you'd be screamin' bloody murder. Ramblin': The problem is these states' definition of obscene is harsher than the federal definition of obscene. For example, you can get arrested in Texas for ordering sex toys in the mail. |

Actually, it was illegal until a few months ago. I guess Alabama's the only one left.

Iowa.. doesn't surprise me.
"I think the courts have finally opened their eyes and looked around, which is a miracle in the South." now all we need is for the rest of society to open their minds |

Whoo, glad that was cleared up, but what will happen if they find the rest of yaoi offensive? My collection is very small, but what will happen if other people find it offensive and want to ban it? Then they could ban anything! Or worse, send people to jail because of it! Now that'll be the day.... I Just know if they do pass some phony law like that im gabbing my books and running!

It is stupid indeed. I certainly don't like yaoi (though I will admit I have a mild affinity to yuri) but these are animated and drawn images and NOT real life children. It may be distasteful and heck it still may be porn but to be arrested and likely serve up to 20 years?! I could beat my child to death and be given a slap on the wrist. We should protect the children yes, but the REAL children from REAL pedos.

If you don't think anyone should sent to prison over drawings in a manga--if you're concerned about the precedent that would set--don't just voice your concern, don't just hope for a good outcome to happen--like Neil Gaiman, do something positive, get involved, and contribute to the defense, even if it's just a small amount: cbldf.org.

Where do the Democratic-controlled Congress and President-elect Barack Obama stand on the issue?
Have they taken or will they take a stand on the issue? Anyone asked them? Last edited by Siegel Clyne on Tue Nov 25, 2008 6:06 pm; edited 1 time in total |

If they can go after you for getting hentai type stuff though the mail, then what’s stopping them from going to Suncoast type store and going after the manger for selling hentai DVD and me if I was buying a DVD when it happen. District Court = Federal.
Protect Act of 2003 = Federal. The only way Iowa comes into play, is for drawing the jury/community within which he is allegedly violating those federal issues. Iowa's age of consent rules, which were among the lowest in the nation until the past 5-10 years, isn't an issue either. |
