I wonder what on earth they(Viz) are thinking, come on I strongly believe that they could of done a much BETTER attack name than that. The name kinda makes me laugh hysterically and I prefer the literal translation of it like Dragon Twister Blast or anything thats not "Backlash Wave". What are you guys favorite translation of this attack and what do you think of it? I'm going to laugh again when they name Kongousouha a really silly inane name.... By the way these attacks are from the Inuyasha anime and manga of course.

You're supposed to mention this in the thread's title. Anyway, I'd rather they kept the attacks untranslated (Iron Reaver-whatever sounds painfully cornball), but I'm not going to go to war over it if they're indeed changed. Truth be told, the more I rewatch Inu-Yasha, the more the dub as a whole begins to grate on my nerves. I just hope by the time the rest of the series is put out on Adult Swim, I can still withstand it. |

What? InuYasha spouting "IRON REAVER SOUUUUUUUUUUUUL STEALER!!!" everytime he claws someone sounds corny??! HAHA...yeah. I've avoided watching the re-runs of Inu on AS just because I don't want to get sick of it by the time the new eps start airing in April. And yes, "Backlash Wave" is a very bizarre choice for a name. Like *whoopow!* Feel the rath of my Backlash Wave! Talk to the hand, girlfriend... |

I guess your perception of cheesy just depends on your background.
For instance: I play a Pen and Paper RPG called DeadLands. There is a "Mage" (Huckster) class of character that uses poker cards to cast spells. If the black joker comes up in your hand, you receive "Backlash" from the arcane powers. Backlash can, among other things: Injur you, maim a limb, cause brain damage, induce a major phobia or psychological trauma, or outright kill your character. So, from my point of view, if I heard someone yell out "Backlash Wave!" I'd probably run like I stole something. So, yeah...I don't mind the name.

"Backslash Wave?" Sounds like surfer lingo to me.
Anyway, after watching all of the fansubs, I guess I'm just too use to the Japanese terms, hence my hesitation in accepting this name. I agree with rest of you in that the reruns on Adult Swim seem a little worse compared to the original. Ah well, I guess it's better than having the whole thing dubbed by FUNimation and having the whole soundtrack recomposed... SANKON-TESSOU!!!

Point: FUNimation only altered the soundtrack on their first anime acquisition, no others save for sequels of said show. It was simply one of those "rookie mistakes" every domestic anime distro makes (sorta like ADV with their "Samurai-X" thing and old overlay habit). Their many subsequent title acquisitions feature the original music intact. |

Yeah, yeah. I know... We've been through this before. You know this is the only beef I have with them. But don't worry, I still applaud them for everything else past the DB franchise (though much like you, I still prefer subs.) 
And yes, "Samurai X" (bleh!  *uses mouthwash*  ) is also a good example of a "rookie mistake."

Personally, I don't see what's so bad about the name. It's at least better than the likes of "Wind Tunnel," "Blades of Blood," and "Iron Reaver Soul Stealer." "Windscar" had a nice ring to it, too.
I just wish the people writing the dub script would invest in a thesaurus, for God's sake. If I had a penny for every time I heard the word "shard" in that show, Bill Gates would be my geeky little butler. |

Well for the most part, a lot of the English names for attacks have a little something in them still related to the original name. Kazaana = Kaza- being the "wind" part, -ana being hole or void, and I guess they came up with "tunnel" so it'd match his lips Sankon-Tessou = Not sure of the exact translation, maybe something like San being the number 3 (the only translation that comes to mind from my limited Japanese), -kon being the "soul" part, Tes- could be "Iron," and -sou might be "to destroy" or something like that Kaze no Kizu = Kaze meaning wind, no being the possesive conjunction, and Kizu meaning wound or scar or whatever you want it to be. I don't remember what "Blades of Blood" is in Japanese, but the point is a lot of the English names try to hold some resemblance to the original ones, though not liked by all, I guess it's good enough. I'm just glad they didn't try to translate Hiraikotsu into "Bone Cutter" or something like that. Again, this from a pretty limited knowledge of actual Japanese grammar I've read and seen from books and wherever. So, sorry if I screwed anything up. All in all, because of personal preferences, I still like the dub because it's the Ocean Group, but I still think the subbed version is better.

Other attack names: Hijinkessou = Blades Of Blood more or less
Souryuuha: Azure Dragon Blast Gokuryuuha: Infernal Dragon Blast Banryuusen= Banryuu Flash Ryuuraisen= Dragon Lighting Flash Fuujin no Mai: Dance of the Wind Blades Ryuujya no Mai: Dance of the Dragon Serpent. Dance of the Dead: ?????? Meikyoushisui no Hou:The Spell of Clarity and Serenity(sp?)... Kokoro no Kizu= Wound of the Heart Kongousouha= Diamond Spear Blast These are the more well known named attacks than this, gah I wish I was fluent in the Japanese language. |

"rookie mistake" or not, Samurai X has sold well for ADV, so... :p At any rate... If these attacks sound silly to you in English... Think for a moment how Japanese viewers might think about the same attacks in Japanese. :) |

/'bæk.læƒ weiv/ n. The whining that domestic North American anime companies hear from irate fans every time that they use translations of Japanese attack names which match the "lip flap" but don't capture every tiny nuance of the original attack name in Japanese. |

Tenchi I like your sense of humor and by the way I'm a very loyal fan of the show but still their naming skills are uh bizarre and funny at the same time. Nice defintion too, come to think of it that does make sense. Anyone knows what Dance of the Dead is in Japanese romaji? It stumps me to this day ARGH!
