I was wondering if there is a specific reason for rule number three when submiting a picture to the encyclopedia:

#3 It should not be the cover of a VHS/DVD. (unless nothing better is available)

Is it just because of aesthetics or does it concern copyrights and licenses?

I was also wondering, wouldn't it be better if a sticky was made to hold all general encyclopedia suggestions kinda like the anime and manga ones? Most of the posts on this section rarely take over one page worthy of posts. I kinda feel that memorandums and threads that deal with the structure and functionality of the website shouldn't be washed away by all these one shot threads. The biggest problem I am able to foresee to this suggestion would be that moderators would probably have to keep moving threads into the sticky on a daily basis.

I could be wrong but my impression is that it's because the covers sometimes have little resemblance to the contents, making them less useful than a representative screenshot in giving an idea of what the show actually looks like.

That is a very good reason, but what about on the case of manga? The question came to my mind when I was about to submit a request for picture replacement. Most manga probably won't have promotional images.

Various reasons:
* you can often find promotional art that does a better job of showing all major characters
* the DVD cover may be representative of the content in that particular volume, but not all volumes in the series
* the DVD cover usually contains the title in a large/fancy font, which means less space for the picture itself.
* people often think of the DVD cover as the "default" picture, so having that rule puts a break on mindless "oh I'll just put the DVD cover" thinking (hopefully)

All that being said, sometimes the DVD *is* the best available picture.

In fact, covers have the least copyright concern. Acquiring printed covers are much easier than acquiring textless backgrounds, and most licensees are happy to provide larger cover art (with text) in megapixels when requested by media.

Addendum: when searching Japanese websites, those promotional arts are known as "key visual" (キービジュアル). Hope that helps.

It sure did. Thanks all. Since there was recently a thread asking how long does a license last, I wondered if ANN had ever faced the problem of a company asking for the removal of an image due to an expired license (cover art of a DVD or VHS from previous licensor).
