I think it's generally categorised as an artbook rather than a manga and thus not eligible to be included in the encyclopedia.
I could be wrong though... |

The Robot series is artwork comprised mainly by Range Murata, and there are contributions by others. So, technically they are not manga. Here is a page to the first book in the series if you are interested in it though.

I have the first volume and it's pretty much all manga except for 3 pages of pure illustration.
It's manga, for sure...just presented in a very glossy, fancy, all-color style. |

It counts as an anthology more than it does an artbook, and while there are some single pieces of art in Robot, it is mostly made up of manga short stories (in full color, too!). Range Murata actually has very little of his work in there; the main focus is on the lesser-known artists.

Opinions evidently vary: Right Stuf call it an "artbook" (see fighterholic's post for the link). The series' own publisher (DPM) call it an "illustration book". Del Ray's Manga: The Complete Guide states in the "what's not included" section of the introduction that Robot isn't included because it's an "anthology magazine". J-List's product description says it's a "short manga in a thick, large artbook format" (kinda hedging their bets there). Personally, I think it straddles the borders between artbook, anthology mag and manga book, making it difficult to definitively classify. The encyclopedia staff have obviously opted to designate it as an artbook though - hence it not having a listing. |

Range Murata himself often refers to it a "magazine" in this interview. If you had to compare it to something else, though, it's most similar to a manga anthology when you consider the format and presentation. |

It's full of full-color manga, so I'd say its more of a manga anthology. But the presentation is more of what you would expect from an artbook than an anthology (like, say, Shonen Jump or Shojo Beat).

Well, if the general concensus is that Robot shouldn't be regarded as an artbook, maybe somebody should open a thread on the encyclopedia board and try to get it added.

Maybe, but if it was to my understanding I have not seen too many anthologies in the encyclopedia, if any. |

Anthologies have their own section in the encyclopedia. |
