Sounds like an easy way to drum up sales.
"You want to see Ghost in the Shell 3? Go buy the second one!"
It's sad when business gets in the way of art, but I understand that Production IG can't operate at a loss, so this is just how it has to be.

Make it, or don't make it, most people won't really care either way.
Years passed, and the world kinda moved on both from GitS, and Oshii.

If is hasn't broken even in two decades, what makes him think it's gonna happen now?

there is no way they didn't make any profits from this after 2 decades with just a budget of 18 million dollar. like wtf?
did they mean the box office?

No offense but this seems more like an underhanded tactic to get desperate fans to buy more copies of the movie or are planning a re-release and get them to pay to see it. Otherwise i have no idea how they plan to make it break even.
seriusly what the heck does he mean by that anyway? even if the 2nd movie has not broken even they had more sales from other merchandise/movie deals, tv shows and varius games they have released since.

Especially when I don't think they're even licensing it out to any streaming service.

I would like to see a Ghost in the Shell movie sequel, but nothing related to the Innocence GitS movie. I am probably in the minority on this, but didn't really care for the Innocence movie. I thought it was a departure from the original movie and the manga and it probably killed the future of other Ghost in the Shell anime movies.
I agree with many above that if the Innocence movie didn't make a profit, I don't see how it will now. So there is probably something else going on.
I would love to see more of Masamune Shirow's works be made into anime or revisited. Including Ghost in the Shell, but not Innocence.

Has it occurred to anyone here that he might have been kidding? Like, that he was yanking Oshii's chain about how the movie wasn't profitable, and that this might not actually have any bearing on whether a GitS 3 gets made?

It did, but I am pretty sure that he was at least half serious about it.

Just because the budget was that low doesn’t mean it recouped it’s budget.
The Ratchet & Clank movie cost around 20 million dollars to make and only made about 14 million dollars underperforming so badly it killed the Sly Cooper movie that was supposed to come out behind it.

Yeah it almost sounds like a cruel joke, I don't think it can possibly meet those figures now. But I guess he's serious if he says he also wants to see the movie made? It was Production IG that originally shot down Oshii's pitch video anyway, so I can't imagine the final result making them happy even if they went for it. Still, it's the movie I want to see most in the world, even if it's just me and Oshii who like it.

You are definitely not in the minority because everyone says this constantly.

They’ve got a new 4K edition, so people might be tempted to spring for that. That’s how it might turn a profit today instead of earlier.
When I saw the special promotional screening in Boston years ago, there were only two of us in the theater (I think the other may have been Mike Toole).

This is painful for me because Ghost in the Shell 2 Innocence is what I consider to be the greatest animated movie of all time, not to mention one of the greatest movies, in general.
How has this movie not broken even yet? What the heck are people watching?

Sounds eerily close to what was going on with Gainax with Wings of Honneamise & Aoki Uru...

I knew the film wasn't a runaway hit, but it didn't even break even yet? It's not like they gave a big theatrical run overseas. It was just film festivals, and those are always typically sold out. I know because that's how I first saw it.
My guess is that he's likely speaking specifically about the Japanese theatrical release. But after all this time, surely I thought it'd have more than recouped enough to have broken even after all these years.
I suspect he just wants to sell more 4K blu-rays of the 4K master. I already own the original DVD release that was subbed only, then double dipped on the dubbed blu-ray. I wouldn't mind triple dipping on the Ultra Blu-Ray, it's a beautiful film, but I don't have a 4KTV...
If they are even bringing up the sequel this much, I suspect it's pretty much going to happen.

I still care...

Why not both? Science Saru is making the TV series that I believe will closely adapt Shirow's art style, characters and depiction. So if they make the 3rd film, it'll be the best of both worlds.
I think the biggest deterrence to Innocence by casual viewers is that Innocence is a sequel that assumes you've watched the first GITS, so it doesn't bother wasting time recapping or re-explaining anything, which isn't friendly to newcomers, and also that the dialogue is written in such a way that accounts for how people in the future who are permanently connected to the net might converse where they can just quote things verbatim. An idea that totally makes sense in light of meme culture and trending topics, but which can come off pretentious and alienating.
It's interesting that Oshii had ideas for the next film that he planted in Innocence, and I'd would absolutely love to see it happen and where it goes, just as much as I've loved the way StandAlone Complex adapted it, and I look forward to the next entry and seeing the Major and the Section 9 members doing dat Science Saru walk cycle!
