Did you see Innocence? He didn't even have enough GitS for TWO movies, let alone three.
Just let your protege, Kamiyama, handle it, Oshii. You were great once, but you haven't put out a good film in 30 years.

Innocence is a more well-made movie than the first.

Well, I'll give him a chance. But I do agree maybe Kenji Kamiyama is probably better suited for a hypothetical 3rd Ghost in the Shell film. I'm not even sure if a 3rd film would really happen anyway.

Still need to give Innocence a rewatch to see if I appreciate it more now than I did in 2005, but I'll gladly take another stab from Oshii at the series than more Ubukata

A third film would be interesting considering Oshii has never done one (Urusei Yatsura, Patlabor, GitS) and he has always done better on the second movie. If it were to happen I would just hope that they actually get a good team behind it, though I doubt we'll ever see anything like the original GitS or Innocence again at this point; the industry just doesn't do that style of realism anymore

You want to know something really interesting?
The movie is set in the year 2029 that is less than 5 years from now. It is amazing just how much the stuff it has shown is actually what is happening in real world society.
Granted the cybernetics is nowhere near the level shown here but everything else is surprisingly accurate.
if they want to do the 3rd movie it would be appropriate to release it in the year it was originally set in

I like both films but so many years later, I feel there is no good in trying to relive the past days of Ghost in the Shell. The story has moved on in cultural understanding. With even Stand Alone Complex's expansionist internet days cultural relevance long sing past and several spinoffs of more average fair past since.

"Giving it to Kamiyama" wouldn't make any sense at all, the topic is "third oshii GitS". Kamiyama does make GitS - his own GitS. Which is not Oshii's. Which is the topic.
Late period Oshii is very niche and unlikely to be well-liked by most, but that doesn't really matter to us Oshii fans at all. I've wanted Oshii's Gits 3 to be made for a long time, and I know most people don't even know it was ever planned, so hopefully him speaking out about it more leads to something happening.

Innocence will always be divisive, but I love it - I've seen it several times, thank you. But I'd agree that late Oshii is hit-and-miss - I enjoyed Sky Crawlers and Garm Wars, found Fire Hunter infuriating. I'd be more excited in the very unlikely event that Oshii reconciles with Kazunori Ito, who scripted Oshii's Patlabor work and the first Ghost, and they started developing a new Ghost together. Ito and Oshii seem to have been estranged for the last 20 years, but stranger things...

I welcome a third Oshii GitS movie as much as I welcome a Science Saru GitS. I for one loved Innocence, even if I obviously prefer the first movie.

Sure, why not?
More GitS is always a good thing.

Wonder if the new tv series in development motivated him to say this. I mean, this is a big deal considering the manga's style that resulted in censorship due to its adult comedy content in contrast to its more serious movies.

Can't say I've enjoyed other Oshii movies outside of GITS and Innocence, but I would certainly welcome a third instalment.
As for Kamiyama... I enjoyed his take on GITS with SAC and 2nd GiG, but can't say 2045 was any fun, felt more like a very watered down super mid arc in the og SAC, just spread over 24 episodes for no reason. I would like to think this is because of Sola's and Aramaki's involvement in the production and direction, though that's a whole different can of worms...
Anyway, Oshii's take is one thing, and Kamiyama's is another, they are two entirely different interpretations of Shirow's work I have enjoyed, and we have seen plenty from Kamiyama's already, so more Oshii is a good thing, or will be if it gets green lit.
Now, time to wait for a perhaps new remaster, rescan, restoration of both movies, with a juicy collector's package with plenty of storyboard, notes, discarded ideas and whatnot as extras, please? The release from 2018 was very barebones...

I personally can't envision another GitS movie without Atsuko Tanaka as the Major.
