If, however, you have never seen the Solo Leveling TV series—or have but are reading this after the second season has started airing (i.e., January 2025)—you're better off skipping this one. The story is told better in the TV series, plain and simple.

Damn it....there goes my plan to catch up on this series so I can discuss with my friends next Jan on season 2...

I was hoping this compilation movie to act like a “cliff-note" ver but it seems this is not the case at all.

I am very grateful to be able to read this before click the "order submit" button for my tickets for next Tuesday

The ~120-minute run time is a good indicator that they cut a lot to fit in ~40 minutes of new footage. This was only made to create buzz for the second season.

This reminds me of Accel World: Infinite Burst. It is in effect a theatrical film sequel to the TV series, however the first like 25 to 45 minutes of the film is a recap of the series and the story of the film itself is basically either the length of a single regular episode or an OVA.

Nah... Demon Slayer hoodwinked me into going to its theatrical releases(mostly because Mugen Train was new, and i thought it would be that way for the next two "theater" releases). I'm not surprised anything that looks really flashy action-animation-wise is gonna try the same bit. But this series doesn't carry the same level of popularity as DS does. Its not THAT good that I'd let it waste my time for 1.25 hours to see only 40 mins of the TV series that'll appear in another month.

Neither DS nor this was ever advertised as not being exactly what it was: recap paired with new content for the next season. I still went to see both because I like the theatrical experience.

And you're underestimating how popular it is. Its first season was more popular than DS's Hashira Training Arc (according to MAL) and trailed only Oshi no Ko and Frieren as 2023's most popular series. Granted, it's nowhere near on the same qualitative level as those two, but that's beside the point; it's a legitimate international hit.

Miles Atherton has reported that Solo Leveling was by far the most popular anime of winter 2024 among English-speakers, but also that the Hashira Training arc was still overwhelmingly popular in the US. I don't know that he's done any head-to-head analyses.

Oops, I apparently got mixed up on what season Solo Leveling debuted in, so it's quite probably the most popular title debuting this year. My point still stands, though, that its popularity shouldn't be underestimated.

I watched with some friends that were fans.

I thought the story was a lame wish fullfillment vehicle, I lost it a couple times with the dialogue/plot like when the sister tells him "I didn't knew that adults could still grew" because the MC goes from lame dude to korean NTR protagonist or when I saw him conveniently get skills like "Willpower" when he needed it vs the Knights or that he is the only one with a mystical UI that gives him everything he needs, like him teleporting out of harm because he missed a "daily" and having just enough money to get the Knight effective dagger.

At least the fights were incredibly cool, the Knight Igris and Winter Elf were great foes..

The film largely skips over the first four episodes

So it largely skips the only interesting bit of the series Confused ?

After that, it was nothing more than a slick looking power fantasy with hardly any character development nor world building.
