Hm... wonder if I should give one another try. I enjoyed the manga, and have always been a big fan of Nakama Yukie (TRICK is GOAT), but fell off the live action series in the second season, due to it feeling like just a low-effort remake of the first season (same story, different school). Maybe it got better with the third season?

OMG this is such a lovely show!
Matsujun is so spot-on, totally in character, and Shun Oguri is both stunning and great (as usual) - you get to see him before he got famous!

I've wanted this manga in English for years. I always liked the anime. I'll have to give this a try.

My suggestion is always to skip the second season for the reasons you stated,.the third season si the same, a remake of the previous season with a few new elements, so watching the first season then the third season means you get less over lap.
For Gokusen manga readers or just anybody who has not watched this, this got changed a bit from the manga to be more like gto, so this is like GTO, except that this mc is less horny than onizuka, she is still good at fighting, tho. The plotlines in GTO are better but this one is still a good watch if you are not the genre.

First season is definitely the best season! Matsumoto Jun here was a treat.
The second and the third season, ngl, what I like about the second season is the two leading guys, Akanishi Jin and Kamenashi Kazuya. Them and their interaction with their clique is just really good. Unlike the third season, a lot of elements are kind of overexaggerated.
Watching the live-action movie is definitely an encore! Seeing them all together is after years is just great to see.

Man, Gokusen, that's a title I haven't heard in a long while, and the only time I remember the name or heard of it when it was airing back in the day on the SoCal LA 18 (KSCI) channel when they showed it back in '05 (when the second season was airing) by UTB (RIP) with English subs.
Surprised Amazon got all 3 seasons though.

I think that's the same channel that aired TRICK back in the day. A bit before my time, but I'm very thankful for it, as those were the subtitles I had to go by when I first started getting into JDrama.

Sounds like a good idea.
On the subject of GTO, that series never quite landed for me -- when it comes to "Manga about a rough teacher with unconventional methods" live-action adaptations, my favorite was probably Dragon Zakura. Which wound up starring Abe Hiroshi, who played the male lead opposite Nakama Yukie in TRICK.
Honestly, I'm talking myself into rewatching all four shows.
But to jump back to Gokusen for a bit... I do think the casting was a bit... peculiar. Nakama Yukie looks *exactly* like her character in the manga. It's pretty 1:1. To the extent I don't think it would be even a little difficult to convince someone that the manga was actually based on the TV show, rather than the other way around.
