Forgot to mention that it was briefly published here digitally. Anyway, unlike They Were 11, I hope it's a manga with transgender themes which is likely to get a prompt release date.

Who's Peow2? Are they a new manga licensing company or something?

They're a small indie-comic print company that's published a number of international books, but I believe this is their first time licensing a manga.

I remember reading this long ago and the thing is the mangaka has routinely said Hibari-kun is a boy and not trans multiple times. The company calling him "OG trans rep" is a bit concerning and makes me think this is going to be another "I Think I Turned My Childhood Friend Into a Girl" situation where the English localization is going to do it's own thing.
Hopefully this is just a bad marketing blurb and not a reflection of the translation quality from this new company.

Hibari attends school as a girl, wants breasts and wants to be a bride. She asks her father to think of her as a daughter. She's trans by any reasonable interpretation. The only reason she's routinely referred to as a boy is that the manga is from 1981 and the conflation of trans women and gay men was common back then. Eguchi wrote a trans woman, whether or not he understood the distinction at the time.

"Shounen manga is dead!"

Hoo boy. wonder how censored it's going to be. If this was Viz or Kodansha USA they'd definitely edit it given the stuff they tend to remove but I have no idea who this company is or what their track record is. The synopsis doesn't inspire much confidence though.

The real question is: will this manage to get the anime licensed? (I have no idea if the anime is any good or not)

There's some pretty jarring racist content, which is the main reason I suspected this might never get an English release. I'm not sure that removing it would even be possible, but I certainly wouldn't be opposed to changes in that regard. I know that might be sacrilege to some, but yeah, that's about where I am with it.

As for localizing the trans stuff, well... Hibari's family generally refer to her as a boy, and her schoolmates, who believe her to be a cis girl, refer to her as a girl. Whether you subscribe to Hibari being trans or not, I'm not sure you'd approach the localization much differently.

The anime is a mixed bag. It's strongest when it's adapting the manga; later episodes are mostly original material and they fall back a bit too hard on parodies and stuff. The theme song is a banger though.

The anime also has a fair bit of racism sprinkled throughout, just FYI.

Amusingly enough, TokyoPop (of all companies) handled this kind of thing the best way possible ~20 years ago, when they released Cyborg 009: Include a message at the start explaining the content & the time it was made in, while acknowledging that it hasn't been changed or altered because they want to present the manga the way it was made back then, because if the mangaka didn't change it themselves then that decision should be honored.

I mean, that's literally what Warner Bros. & even Disney have done for some of their old theatrical cartoon shorts from the days of World War II & the like, so why this can't be done more often for manga is weird. Some mangaka have made alterations to their older works in the decades since in Japan to accommodate for the change in times, but others haven't.

malvarez: Dunno about the anime, but the manga's a bit of a time capsule like Soap. I do wonder how the homophobia and casual pre-Tsutomu Miyazaki joke about being a loli will fly, though. But yeah, I still hope they don't edit it for a broad Millennial audience like Dr. Slump....
