Episode 01: The Vending Machine Travels
----------------------------------

Summary:

After sacrificing his body to save a vending machine, the young vending machine otaku wakes up to find himself in a strange fantasy world.. reincarnated as a vending machine. He is unable to move and only has rudimentary communication skills to those around him, when a female adventurer, Lammis, discovers and names him Boxxo.
----------------------------------

Comments:

I keep forgetting that vending machines are so much more elaborate in Japan than the U.S. Most of the stuff I imagine you can get in their vending machines, I figure you can just get at a store, over here. And the majority of the U.S. machines just tend to carry the most generic variety of snacks and drinks. But you take that kind of simplicity and put it in a fantasy world where none of that convenience exists, and all of a sudden, it's a godsend.

Ever since watching Campfire Cooking in Another World, I've developed a "slice of life bug" and pretty much try to keep all my options open for every and any opportunity for the next "chill and wholesome isekai with a very basic theme" to wow me over with its aforementioned simplicity and, hopefully good, production value. I guess I've watched so much stuff with actual drama and/or plot over the years, the SoL stuff is a really nice change of pace.

I am curious to see just how many modern items Boxxo can upgrade or change out. Maybe he'll even be able to upgrade his internal computer or something and be able to speak normally by the end? While not quite super-ridiculous (yet), it's seems like a cheery enough show that'll keep me invested with its slice of life elements.

Episode 02

The second episode had plenty of action and made clear just how useful Boxxo can be, be it for food/drinks, keeping an eye out with a barrier when needed or some solid cola plus mint action. I am still pleasantly surprised by how good the anime is. It is easy to write it off due to the weird premise, but it is pretty fun so far.

I watched episode 2 amiably enough. Having the guild be the focus of the expedition instead of a 1-man OP protagonist was a nice switch. And I was pleasantly surprised to find that some of the fights scenes in the middle were better than the boiler plate isekai throwaway scenes I was expecting. But mostly, I'm still interested in seeing how "Boxxo" will manage to find new ways to interact with this world.

I do hope the anime steps up it's game a bit in that regard. I thought the idea that having a vending machine strapped to her back helped right the female lead's balance was pretty lame. Though who knows, maybe Darkness over in Konosuba ought to give it a try. And the mints/cola thing didn't really land for me comedically or as a real tactic. I mean, if the king toad's flames came from igniting some kind of gaseous belch, and swallowing a carbonated fizzy bomb made it explode.....

Anyhow, after giving so many new shows a chance, I'm also a few days behind viewing schedule (haven't watched Helck yet, or forced myself to watch Sunshine Mirror, or caught episode 2 of Herectical Queen, etc), and now I've also finally started dropping some of them. Vending Machine made the cut.

Episode 02: The King Frog Fiend Appears
----------------------------------

Summary:

Director Bear of the Hunter's Association requests Lammis to bring Boxxo for food support, while they attempt to slay some frog fiends. Later that evening, the King Frog Fiend attempts to carry out a sneak attack. Boxxo devises a plan to use soda and mints to blind the King, until backup arrives.
----------------------------------

Comments:

Modern ingenuity saves the day! Like I keep mentioning about the simplicity of these SoL shows, it's these little taken-for-granted things that seem so minor, but make such a big difference that really get to me. It was literally do or die, then all it took was weaponizing soda to blast in the Frog King's eyes, and it worked just long enough for Bear and company to show up.

I'm also not surprised that someone would wanna' break into Boxxo and steal his items. But thankfully, they seem to be playing these shady guys off more as comedy relief. Some kind of conflict could be okay. But judging by how short the light novel run was, I'm gonna' guess this one season is probably all we'll get. And by that logic, there's only so much room for whatever conflict they decide to introduce, with the rest of the show staying cheery and positive.

I do admit, demi-human characters are always nice to have in a fantasy series. I feel like if they're half-animal, it makes the character roster feel more diverse. Maybe it's just from watching so much Star Trek, recently; you can dress up any alien race or creature to walk on two legs, but they're still basically just humans with different skins and attitudes.

This world continues to expand for me with a pleasant mix of fantasy and simplicity. I wonder what other everyday underappreciated items they'll highlight?

Episode 3

This one really showed how diverse Boxxo can be. Be it food, drinks, shampoo, condoms or a bit of stealthing, he is your vending machine. The world he is in is anything but safe though: a snake monster wrecked the town, a thief is after him (he did not learn his lession it seems) and now there are even girls fighting over who deserves Boxxo. crazy premise aside, every episode is a lot of fun.

[Still fighting flu]

Hey Tony, I don't know how you deal with the flu, but I always put on some low stress comfort TV that I've seen before, the kind where it doesn't matter if I fall in and out of sleep while I'm watching it. Then I drink lots of orange Gatorade and soup and bundle up so I'll sweat a lot.

As to stressing out over updating anime threads, I'm pretty sure that's not what the doctor ordered. And yes, I have a doctorate in slacking and crashing. Get some rest.

Anyway, about Vending Machine, I'm still watching it and still going right along with it.
It's not as weird or groundbreaking a concept as I expected, but it does give a different perspective.

For example, in a lot of Isekai, there would be a monster attack, and the protagonist would go out and handle it, and then a chesty receptionist and a tsundere rival would be all over him while the townsfolk cheered. But in this episode, we saw a town where nobody stopped the monster from wreaking lots of havoc before it was killed. We got a bystander's perspective and saw survivors pulling their lives back together while the MC donated food. I'm not saying it was beautifully done or had incredible world building or anything, but it was different enough that I'm still watching this isekai while I dropped Am I Actually the Strongest.

And again, I also Iike the way the protagonist keeps trying to find new ways to use his limited vocabulary to communicate, or changes into different kinds of vending machines, or uses his stealth or barrier modes to be useful. The limitations of the premise forces the show to get creative in a way I find entertaining. Mildly entertaining, for me anyway, but genuinely entertaining.

I was able to work from home all of last week and am 96% recovered! I took a lot of Ny/Dayquil and just have the nagging remnants of congestion left, which usually takes another week to get over.

Last time I had the flu, I was still working retail, meaning I had to work with the flu, which made it take a little longer to recover from. But I just need to pace myself and make sure I maintain my 9 hours a day of sleep, and I'll be up and running (and hopefully not into the ground) again!

Episode 03: Rebuilding
----------------------------------

Summary:

The party returns to the village and discovers it was damaged by a monster attack and begin to rebuild. Acowi of the Merchants Exchange reveals the village is running out of silver coins, but then realizes she can get them back as change putting gold in Boxxo. Director Bear asks Boxxo to help Shirley, a brothel owner, where diseases are becoming a problem. And a rich girl named Suori begins vandalizing Boxxo, who also tries to buy him from Lammis, but she refuses.
----------------------------------

Comments:

Some nice reminders of hygiene, here: soap and condoms. I don't know about y'all, but to me, it's imperative that I shower every day. I like feeling clean. And if I slept around as much as they seem to be implying these village people do, then yeah, condoms would be great to have, as well, to prevent the spread disease and stuff.

I feel this was one of those episodes that went slice of life and highlighted the simplicity of some basic items that we probably take for granted in the newer modern world, but are considered, yet, another godsend in under-developed fantasy world. I imagine bathing in a world like that would consist mostly of just throwing water on yourself. If you were rich, maybe you could afford a bath. And they probably hadn't even invented actual soap or shampoo, or probably just use a very rudimentary version of 'em. Like I mentioned earlier, I like feeling clean. But in that world, staying clean is probably the least of your problems (i.e. monster attacks).

The condom thing I suppose is more indicative of old-world living. Realistically speaking, I'm sure life expectancy was pretty low, fantasy world or not. So all you really had to do for yourself every day in life was try to stay alive/happy, which means you're either working, doing nothing, or if you have some disposable income, making yourself happy by paying for sex. And sex is fun, so you'll wanna' do it a lot. But if you're doing it that much, and supposedly with different people who are also probably doing it with different people, you gotta' protect yourself and them to protect everyone else. Henceforth, condoms = good.

I will say I do appreciate Lammis' optimism, though. She definitely strikes me as shounen-esque character with a pretty good moral compass, but is also very likeable. I feel like her super-strength inadvertently makes her come off a little masculine, yet she's got this lovable girliness, as well.

Episode 04

A bit of excitement this week with Boxxo getting kidnapped by a bunch of thugs. We also got to meet Hulemy, who seems like a kind person. Things got a bit tense a few times, but thanks to some creative thinking everything ended well. I do have to say that an oxygen machine is a new one for me as far as vending machines go, it came in handy though. As did the porn magazine version. I would suggest that Boxxp keeps investing points into his stats, we may get an overpowered vending machine that way.

Was it that CGI Lorax movie where somebody was selling air? I seem to have blocked most of that movie. Anyway, the idea that you'd have to pay for oxygen seems pretty dystopian to me. Although I can maybe see towns near paper mills or tire factories offering a service like that for tourists. .

Hulemy <---(spelling?) seems fun and flirtatious to boot. It's too bad that our MC doesn't have any sexual organs, not that this makes him unique as far as male isekai protagonists go.

The show succeeded in making me curious about what kind of undertaking the menagerie team desperately needs Boxxo for.

You should get Gina to mix you up some purple drank Wink Sounds like it will either put you back on your feet or knock you off them.

I'll take my chances with the -quils. I don't need the extra sugar and stuff from the soda mixing, anyway. Although if a certain isekai'd sentient vending machine suddenly appeared and gave me a freebie of it, I might try some! Razz

Episode 04: Boxxo is Abducted
----------------------------------

Summary:

Boxxo is taken by bandits and put in a room with Lammis' friend, a kidnapped engineer named Hulemy, who is told by the kidnappers to figure out how to open Boxxo for his money. Boxxo and Hulemy develop a rapport, when one night, some of the bandits attempt to sneak in and attack Hulemy in her sleep, which is countered by Boxxo dispensing free sex magazines to sway them into a different course of action. Before the deadline to figure out Boxxo, the hideout is attacked, with Boxxo and Hulemy getting buried beneath the rubble.
----------------------------------

Comments:

Another taken-for-granted thing in life: if you're feeling a little too much pent-up stress and/or aggression, try having sex (with yourself, or a partner, if you have one). I guess it also highlights the convenience of porn. I'm thinking back to an episode of Sweet Reincarnation (also airing this season) where the main character has the power to magically put images on handkerchiefs. And he puts the picture of a princess on one for this prince, but the prince asks him if he could make the image a little sexier. You can probably guess why he wants a sexy picture all to himself. I'm not gonna' delve into human sexuality and the positive conveniences I personally feel porn can provide, as it's more of an aside, here. But I think that covers the "vending machine item of interest" for the episode.

The main takeaway is the introduction of Hulemy. While I do like Lammis, I feel Hulemy is kind of her opposite. Lammis is strong and optimistic, whereas Hulemy is more intellectual and.. not pessimistic, per se, but realistic? I know it's only one episode, but I like how she gets by more on her smarts, akin to how Lammis gets by with her strength. It's a neat contrast and might be interesting to see how their dynamic flows if they end up fighting over Boxxo or something, later.

I wonder how many different forms Boxxo will end up being able to change into. His standard form is classic vending machine, but then he's also turned into a candy dispenser, and now an oxygen dispenser, which I didn't even know was a thing. He'll obviously keep making lots of money with all the convenient items he's capable of providing, which will raise his points and offer more upgrades.

I'm still optimistic he'll eventually be able to upgrade so much, that he'll become a kind of supercomputer vending machine with fully capable speech. But it probably won't be till the end of the season. Regardless, this was a very good episode, and I hope it continues to keep highlighting common, every day, useful items while expanding the character roster and their progressions.

[u]Episode 05[/i]

Another week, another episode filled with a vending machine being very handy. This time there was a magical item show and a restaurant chain trying to take over. Regarding the former I would like to believe that tinkering with a human's soul is not a legal/wise thing to do, there was also some nice bickering between the noble ladies. As for the restaurant, given the huge lines of people it kind of seemed like it would fail even without Boxxo helping. Make people wait long enough with a hungry tummy and they will go elsewhere.
