Confidence from the fault to deliver them on time beforehand — considering they were supposed to be shown through the whole of March to the beginning of April this year, but Aniplex screwed the production with multiple delays?
It sounds more like the way to just end it by buying the free 2-hour slot on a weekend instead of the whole recap — and just call it a day.

Well, at least they AIR episodes. And I read somewhere that 24 episodes were planned. Let's wait and see.

Yeah, this strikes me as more of a "let's just get past this" move.

The studio has little say on how many eps will get made. The production committee controls the money and if they see value in finishing this then it will be. Will the staff or studio keep that potential assignment after tanking the anime´s launch twice and being forced to pump and dump the season´s 3rd act? Who knows.
Automata sold at least 7.5 million copies and is part of an active IP. That alone will save season 2´s chances as this is an advertisement. It being a good take on the material is us getting lucky.

Aniplex and Square Enix were planning it to be 2 cour nonstop from the beginning so it'll continue but might come back for the next year so not the same scenario happens.
