They're one of the best Japanese rock bands, and they've been performing hit after hit for the last 15 years, and are still going strong with an upcoming single that will be featured in Devil May Cry 4 titled "DRINK IT DOWN" - set for April 2nd this year. Right now, I'd say we're in the third wave of L'Arc~en~Ciel music. The first wave started at their debut to '96 when Sakura was arrested. The second wave follows, with Yukihiro as the new drummer. So since their break for solo work I think it's appropriate to consider this the third wave, especially because in the last two albums (AWAKE, and KISS) they've reinvented themselves in a sense with a bit of a darker feel to many of their songs.

However, when they started releasing singles for their AWAKE album, an interesting song appeared on the B-sides of the singles. They were previously released songs from the band but with the addition of "2005" at the end of their names. And when you listened to it, it was much more fast-paced, much more heavy, much more"P'UNK". Yes, 2005 was the year that the world was introduced to P'UNK~EN~CIEL. The spin-off band of sorts, consisintg of the same four members of L'Arc~en~Ciel (and Hajime Okano in regards to composition). Despite, the fact all members were present, their roles were changed however.

Hyde went from vocalist to guitarist
Tetsu went from base to vocals
Ken went from guitar to drums
Yukihiro went from drums to base

The results were surprisingly well-received, and unexpectedly awesome! Since 2005, every single L'Arc's released has contained a P'UNK remixed B-side of a previously released song. The following is the original song and the name of the P'UNK beside it and in brackets the original L'Arc's song additional appearence:

Jiyuu e no Shoutai/Milky Way - June 2nd, 2004
Killing Me/ Round and Round 2005 - January 13th, 2005
New World/kasou heisei jyuunana-nen - April 6th, 2005
Jojoushi/Heaven's Drive 2005 - May 18th, 2005
Link/Promise Land 2005 - July 20th, 2005 (The FMA movie opening theme)
Seventh Heaven/Honey 2007 - March 31th, 2007
MY HEART DRAWS A DREAM/Feeling Fine 2007 - Aug. 29th, 2007
DAYBREAK'S BELL/Natsu no Yuutsu [SEA IN BLOOD 2007] - Oct. 10th, 2007 (yes the Gundam 00 opening theme)
Hurry Xmas/I Wish 2007 - Nov. 14th, 2007

Now that you know a bit about P'UNK~EN~CIEL. here's some music you to enjoy, and compare.

HONEY vs. HONEY 2007

I Wish vs. I Wish 2007

Feeling Fine vs Feeling Fine 2007

Heaven's Drive vs. Heaven's Drive 2005

I believe DUNE 2008 will be the B-side for DRINK IT DOWN by the way. So what do you think is the better rotation, L'Arc~en~Ciel or P'UNK~EN~CIEL?

I have only heard a couple of songs of PUNK~EN~CIEL and honestly, they didn't suit my taste. I don't appreciate heavy and "punk" music and that is what PUNK~EN~CIEL's music is. I also didn't appreciate tetsu on the vocals. So if you ask me which I prefer between L'Arc and PUNK~EN~CIEL, I'd say L'Arc. L'Arc's music is more suited for my taste, in fact I love L'Arc's music. But on the other hand, PUNK~EN~CIEL is a refreshing change from L'Arc. It's nice to see them change roles once in a while. It's amazing to see hyde on the guitars although I still prefer him on the vocals. I don't really hate PUNK~EN~CIEL it just so happens that I prefer L'Arc over them.

Of course I prefer L'Arc~en~Ciel to P'UNK~EN~CIEL, but I still like P'UNK! I enjoy the different take on their songs, they're fun, and to me just prove even more what amazing musicians they are. Anime smile

It really depends on what I feel like at the time. P'UNK~EN~CIEL is a nice change from the regular L'Arc~en~Ciel sound, but I wouldn't say I preferred it all the time - after all, it was the original sound I fell in love with - although some songs definitely sound better "P'UNK-ified"

I love both..but I prefer L'Arc~en~Ciel compared to P'UNK~EN~CIEL. L'Arc's musics are more creative and suits my taste of music, but doesn't mean that P'UNK are bad. They're also great and their musics are fun to hear. Besides, the existence of P'UNK shows that the members of L'Arc are creative, right? Let's look on how they changed Feeling Fine into Feeling Fine 2007 and I Wish into I Wish 2007. From a song that have such sweet feelings to a punkish song..don't everyone think both are great?
