Netflix's new policy hurts people like me. Currently my household is split between two countries, Nigeria and the UK. I live with my parents in Nigeria, while my siblings are currently in the UK. If they (my siblings) come to Nigeria again they'd bring the PS4, which has the Netflix app installed, but Netflix's new policies would probably make it not function.
EDIT: I also hate how whenever Netflix wants to test out a policy, they use Chile, Costa Rica and Peru as lab rats. That seems really exploitative on their part. Last edited by DamianSalazar on Sun Feb 05, 2023 12:56 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I don't understand why they don't just implement a family plan of some kind. This is just needlessly restrictive.

I take it this is happening as they are, or at least think they are, approaching the maximum amount of subscribers they can get. So they are trying to get people who use other peoples accounts to sign up for their own.

That’s exactly why it’s happening. Especially with every other content provider wanting their own service and willing to suffer losses to make it operational rather than surrender hypothetical profits to Netflix. |

So basically every time I go to the hospital I have to ask Netflix for permission to use my own account. Brilliant, can't wait for it to take effect here.

To be honest, I have been reading up about Netflix's password sharing crackdown, and to be honest I think it's going to backfire and failed. Because has Netflix calculated that there are relatives that lived in multiple states? What about families that traveled back & forth to 2 different states, I mean like for example, family A has 2 homes in Texas & Maryland and they traveled back & forth to both states every 2-3 weeks, so how is that process going to work.
Also, I read it that Netflix will make every users check-in at home's Wi-Fi every month (2nd: source: Forbes). Did Netflix not learned any lessons from Microsoft's Xbox One's "always on" DRM fiasco back in 2013 (in case you forgot, it was almost a thing when it was first announced in 2013)? When Microsoft made this announcement back in 2013, there was a major backlash toward that proposed policy and it helped the PS4's sales despite Microsoft did a 180 on the "always on" DRM policy because of the backlash. I expect this level of backlash at Microsoft to also happen at Netflix. What Netflix is doing is basically the same thing Microsoft did back in 2013, and this is going to cause a big crash at Netflix the same way it did to Microsoft. If you want more story about the Microsoft's "always online" DRM ideas/proposal for Xbox One back in 2013, Derek Alexander of Stop Skeleton from Fighting/Happy Video Game Nerd (HVGN) has a documentary video that talked about the controversy from a year ago. As I said, what Netflix is doing with the password crackdown is basically the 2023 equivalent to Microsoft's "always online" DRM for Xbox One, I expect a huge backlash and serious problem with this idea. IIRC, the FAQ said that a verified device is good for 30 days before needing to "check back in". So if they use it before they leave the UK and aren't with you for more then a month, they there shouldn't be an issue. After that, they just need to verify with a code once a week. At least that's my understanding.
There was mention that there would be an add on option for people living elsewhere, but so far no mention of the cost. Presumably it'd be less than a stand alone subscription. |

So every time I have to travel overseas have to ask Netflix for permission and stay less than a week...

Funny how they said that the new policy's details that got put up wasn't actually what they were going to implement (at least in the US) only to just immediately implement it in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru. I'm assuming that's mostly because communication between the different parts of the company couldn't stop it in time, but it just shows how out of touch they are with their customer base if they seriously thought they could have just rolled out this awful policy change and not receive immense pushback.

It's happening because they want to make more money next year than this year, more money next year than the year before. The line must go up -- consistent profits are insufficient. (It's worth noting, of course, that Netflix's pricing models already account for password-sharing -- you have to pay more money to stream to multiple devices simultaneously. Most people who share their account with other people are gonna already be paying more so that everyone can watch without interruption or limit -- this move is solely an attempt to milk as much money out of their subscribers as possible). And while they're doing this, they're also losing old content to their competitors, failing to create new content to compete with those other streaming services, and prematurely cancelling series after series for being insufficiently popular. Basically, the company is imploding. Unless there are major changes, I doubt Netflix will still be around in the next 4 years. It's cultural ubiquity is swiftly becoming a relic of the past. |

I'll say right now, Netflix can crash and burn for this idiotic cash-grab scheme.
My family already has Disney+ and Amazon Prime and with two households, there's no justifiable reason to hang on to a service that's trying to make its paying customers beg for access to their own accounts. Netflix may have started the streaming boom but with moves like this and canceling so many shows prematurely because they're not all the next Stranger Things is what I believe will lead to their extinction. |

Funny how people are enraged, that Netflix wants to stop people who not pay for their service, to use their service.

I guess the outrage is because people have been doing this for so long, but honestly it makes sense. It's basically freeloading. I don't use Netflix at all though.

And at the risk of terminating the accounts of the people who pay for their service. |
