Despite the problems mentioned here, I was enough of a fan of MF in series form that I'll still probably check this out if it's playing in my area. (Sheryl is one of the franchise's most interesting songstresses, 2nd opener "Lion" is still easily a Top 10 All-Time OP, and I still consider the climactic battle scene to be one of the most epic of all sci-fi action sequences in anime.) Love that at least the movie summaries are finally becoming legally available in English.

I really hope we get a Blu-ray of this at some point. Maybe AX will bring some news on that front?

I have a friend with ways of watching the series, and I plan on seeing Frontier soon enough, but I figure there's no harm in seeing the films first. I mean, that's what I did with the original Macross (I saw Do You Remember Love first).

Got my ticket, heading out to see it in an hour
I liked the movie when I first watched it, but I throw in the caveat that it should not be watched on its own, it should really be checked out after watching the series. At least that way you learn about the characters in a way where it isnt rushed.

I watched the television series but I kinda have blurry memories about the story other than the basics. I don't remember Saotome being that unlikable. I mean nowadays whenever I hear of mechas series people seem hate pilots who don't wanna get into the robot or are too sensitive. Saotome seems to want to fight which gave me a weird laugh when he got punched by a superior for trying to pilot a thing. I really don't remember well but yeah the franchise has a thing for this like Rick Hunter making weird love comments or the singer from 7 being a really extreme pacifist to the point he hates punching enemies. Then again these three are the only Macross series I watched.

Just got back from the movie after having not seen the series in well over a decade or so at this point. I remember Alto being pretty meh, but I think what I missed the most from this movie was honestly the Sheryl and Ranka friendship, which is totally absent here. They barely feel like professional rivals, whereas in the series they practically felt like besties verging on sister-wives. Even knowing that the latter third of the series put Ranka on the sidelines for the most part as the plot kicked into high gear, I suspect these movies are going to be focused largely on Sheryl and her development. And don’t get me wrong, she’s a great character, but I always felt like the one area the anime could have improved on was equalizing how much spotlight each girl got, so it’s kind of a shame to see the movies repeating that mistake.

I love the movie but that's not my goddamn problem. I'm trying to add fansubs to my japanese bluray but the opening of the home release seems to have scenes rearranged from the fansub scripts. Was there more than one version of this movie released?

I went and saw this last night at my local theater. I missed Macross Plus and regret it. I want to show my support for Macross and prove to Big West and HG that people still love the show. And I'm sure we will get the Delta movies after these two, I think the DVD release is soon for Delta part 2?
We also have to make the argument that if we show our support for Macross shows and stuff here in America it will resonate back to Japan that they need to keep giving us new shows more often. With the North America and other regions now open to Macross that's a lot more potential fans and consumers.
Anyway, it was great seeing this on the big screen. The theater wasn't packed by any means but there was 20 to 30 people easy. frankly I'm supriised that many turned out and it puts hope in my heart that the fan base is there.
I had forgotten how often I listened to these songs and how many of the lyrics/melodies, I knew and could sing/hum along too! I'm going to have to reload my IPhone with my old Macross playlists now. OK I lied, my Macross Paylists never left my phone and I listen to Sheryl, Ranka, Ishtar, Sharon Apple, and yes even Nekki Basara (Listen to my song!)
Can't wait for part two on the 30th. DECULTURE!

No matter how many times I've seen this movie I somehow always forget about the random "goddammit" scene.

I went to see this last night. Regardless of my thoughts on the movie, I was wondering if anyone else had a problem of the movie feeling like it was playing from a DVD player that was projected on to a large screen. Basically, the movie looked blurry as heck and made it hard to really appreciate the visuals.
I was told by others there that it's a given with some anime Fathom releases (as it actually is a DVD being played for the theater screen).

I'm not sure about the visuals, but the audio was definitely kind of jank at my movie theater screening. The audio mixing was kind of all over the place with some of the songs being rather quiet instead of booming.

Agreed on both accounts. As someone who has been spending quite a lot of time at my local Regal courtesy of all these Fathom Events, this movie specifically seemed to be not quite up to par with the usual HD look I’m used to, and the sound of the battlefield was usually a little louder than the songs which was weird.

Yeah, it made me consider asking for a refund for my ticket for Sayonara no Tsubasa.
I just wasn't happy paying $18 for something so subpar.

Saw this last night. It's okay, but the series version was better. I also noticed some of the quality issues above especially the audio being stereo and not having any bass kick like a normal movie would have.
