The explanation for Ken is oddly fitting. Ryu looks kind of rough, but in a way that says he has been off in the wilderness training. Ken, on the other hand, looks like he threw on whatever clothes were within reach and dragged himself out the door because winning a tournament is the last chance he has to turn things around.

Like the Genesis Mini before it, whether I get the new mini will depend mostly on the games it has, but I could see myself getting it to go next to the first one.

The Silent Hill 2 remake isn't off the table, the orginal rumour was that Bloober was wroking on 2 projects, one of which is an original game.

The Sega CD is easily emulatable, we don't need another Mega Drive or Genesis Mini with Sega/Mega CD support, they need to do a Saturn mini badly as Saturn while far easier to emulate now than 5 years ago, is still something that is only for mid end computers and mid-high end tablets at the minimum. Also, the Dreamcast Mini even though tiny emulation machines can run Dreamcast well now, since they are still very niche.

You really think that Sega could get away with selling the Sega CD on it’s own?

That’s precisely why they’re doing this. With that added hope that this new version fixes the issues with the original Genesis Mini

how come there isn't any Final Fight representation?

I guarantee you there will be Final Fight representation in some capacity. They’ve had FF characters in 4 & 5 you seriously think they won’t have any of the cast from the 1st game at the least?

Damnd himself was in the trailer (whether he’ll be playable is another matter).

The most unexpected surprise: that sci-fi horror game Routine was re-revealed, a decade (10 years!) after its original announcement!

Also, did ya know the new Marvel game Midnight Suns by Firaxis (of XCOM fame) was influenced by anime, JRPGs, and even dating sims:

Quote:
"Fire Emblem, Persona, yeah," Solomon cuts in. "When Fire Emblem: Three Houses came out, we were a couple of years into development on this, and the name of the place [in that game] was the Monastery or something like that. It wasn't the Abbey but it was real close to that, and I was like, holy shit, you've gotta be shitting me! But yeah, I played a lot of Persona, and I went even deeper than that. Japanese developers have been doing awesome tactics games combined with RPGs – especially relationships. It creates this resonance where I'm worried about [characters] in the short-term in combat, and then I'm worried about them in this meta way back on the strategy layer. It creates this interesting loop."

Solomon even looked to dating sims for inspiration, particularly as Firaxis was toying with "the idea of coming up with mechanics for increasing friendship". You'll see this influence reflected in the way the Abbey functions, and in the way you can interact and bond with the various heroes around you.

Moellers recalls watching anime with his daughter before and during the development of Midnight Suns, and what he saw would ultimately shape the way the game presents its heroes. "I was watching these scenes like, how? Why does it feel so good, like what's going on?" he says excitedly. "And it's like these full-screen flashes that they're doing on impacts, they're holding anticipations, they're going through these extreme camera angles. They're speeding up and slowing down time to ridiculous amounts. In the MCU, I think that stuff feels really good, but they just go double and triple the power and strength sometimes with some of this stuff."

Moellers points to a few popular moments from recent anime as standouts in the highlight reel he assembled and studied. Levi shredding the Beast Titan (opens in new tab) in season 3 of Attack on Titan, for example. Tanjiro eking out a win (opens in new tab) in episode 19 of Demon Slayer season 1, which lit the entire internet on fire when it aired. He also looked at Dragon Ball Fighterz, which he praises for nailing 2D flourish with 3D models.

"Yeah, you were also very upfront with Marvel that that was the animation style. You were like, 'we're going to be very anime-influenced with the animation'," Solomon adds. Moellers responds: "And they were cool with it!"

M2 does the emulation itself for anything it works on & doesn't rely on any previously-existing emulators for any of its releases. It doesn't matter that Sega CD emulation has existed for years, and the Famitsu interview that came out after the Mini 2's announcement even clarified that the only reason why CD games are even being included is because M2 had been experimenting with that emulation on their own for the fun of it before the Mini 2 even got approved. That's even why the Saturn & Dreamcast Mini idea didn't get approval (aside from the general chip shortages), because M2 had no really started work on emulating those consoles yet; even 32X games won't be included in the Mini 2 for this reason.

You can certainly argue over why M2 feels the need to "reinvent the wheel" when there are already emulators out there, but at the same time doing this kind of stuff is what the staff at M2 love doing the most, to the point of just doing it without even being hired to do so, and that work just happens to be why something like the inclusion of CD games is given to go ahead.

That's some interesting influences @enurtsol, thanks for the info Smile

I loved the recent X-Com & X-Com 2 games, but was less thrilled with Chimera, so hopefully this turns out well Smile

I pre-ordered the Genesis Mini 2, but I hope we get a NA release in the style of the Genesis Core 2 as that was the version of the system I had. I think I'll pass on the Sega CD cosmetic add-on though. I never had that and I don't have space for a plastic decoration anyway lol

I don't think we'll see a mini Saturn or Dreamcast for a long time, even if Sega could afford the rights of third-party titles and the materials needed to make the consoles the Saturn and Dreamcast didn't have as much of an impact with mainstream audiences as the Genesis did. The Gen sold around 40 million units while the Sat and DC only sold 9 million units each, outside of hardcore gamers and Sega enthusiasts those consoles aren't well known to the general public, not to mention that people aren't as nostalgic for the 32-bit era compared to the 8 and 16-bit. The PS1 Classic was a clear example (I know Sony rushed out that mini console to capitalize on the success of the NES and SNES mini), many games from that era didn't age as well as the previous generation. Also, while the Sat controller would be easy to replicate, the DC controller would be another story even if they don't include the VMU, even Sony didn't bother to make a Dualshock controller for the PS1 Classic.
