This seems like a good way to advertise a show. Is there any history behind doing something like this?

That's actually not a bad idea.

This is a really good idea. Hopefully we'll see more of this kind of thing.

Thats a great idea. Its one way to get new possible fans into both the series and anime at the same time.

Well, that's dumb. The first episode is one of the weaker ones- Hagi shows up near the end, but as I recall no actual action takes place until the second episode, unless you count the prologue and the opening, which are themselves pretty vague. It's pretty much just scene-setting, with shoujo-ai undertones thrown in for effect. You need the first two or three episodes to get the idea of what the show is about. They would have saved everyone's time by just doing a trailer...

See, this is exactly the kind of thing I've been wanting to happen for a long time now. If more people are going to get interested in anime, it's going to have to be advertised outside of things that anime fans already read/watch . . . and what's a better incentive to be advertised to than a whole half-hour show's worth of footage for one to watch?

More like 22-24 minutes. And I generally don't count OPs and EDs are part of a show since they are OPs and EDs. So more likely, 20-21 minutes of actual content.

try and look at it in a different light.
yes, after seeing subsequent episodes the flaws of episode 1 are clear, but there is a clear horror theme present in the Chiropteran's appearance near the end, hence including it on horror movies. If a fan of horror movies decides to just check out the first episode with their purchase and decides that it looks like an interesting horror series, then the goal is accomplished.
My problem is that as Blood+ gets further on, it moves away from the horror aspect, although it still retains the action. The Chiropterans were scary (well, not really, but still) in the beginning, but the story moves past basic monster slaying pretty quickly, and i don't think it's fair to market it to non-anime fans on that basis. Although, maybe I'm just being argumentative, because if someone checks out the series on for horror, but likes it anyway, there's nothing wrong.

It's good to get it out there, I suppose. But really, 1 episode out of 51? 52? If someone, with little knowledge of anime and thus none of Blood+ saw this episode, they would get a very short sighted view of the anime.
It's more true than a preview in that you don't have cuts all over the place but atleast a preview lets you see some of the meat that this first 2% obviously won't.

I'm thinking that Sony is aiming this at people who have maybe heard a couple of things about this whole weird "anime" trend, but mostly, think it is either kids' stuff, or porn. Then they watch the episode, and are intrigued enough to drop twenty bucks on the first Blood+ DVD. Whether or not they then decide to go any further, that's still basically twenty bucks a person that Sony gets for little or no expense on their part.
(...this is also why things like Afro Samurai and Witchblade sell absolutely incredible numbers.)

$30 is more like it, actually... and I don't see how a stereotype of "vampire crap" is any better then "kids' stuff and porn"- vampires were overplayed in the 90's to the extent that only the hardest of the hardcore goths are into them nowadays. I like Blood+, but after Hellsing, Trinity Blood, and now Black Blood Brothers, I'm getting sick of these vampire shows. No more, please. We're all stocked up on bloodsuckers here, k thanks.
(EDIT: WTF? this board censors t-h-x? But how am I suppossed to talk about the wicked new stereo on my entertainment center? ~_^ )
