Another one? Is this happening this much in the manga industry or is it a problem in Japan in general?

The reason why these crimes seem to commonly happen is because ANN only exclusively posts about anime. Japan does have a sexual assault problem but let's not pretend they're the only ones out there.

I think what is [expletive] with me not that they found him guilty and the amount of prison time he "would've" gotten, but rather that he won't serve ANY time if he's good for the next 5 years.

I won't comment about crime itself, it doesn't concern me (and from what I saw Japanese people themselves in particular dislike being involved in other people's problems, and someone prying into their own, no matter how big), but it does make me wonder how much can an ordinary person in that country rely on police, and justice, if offenders are treated so leniently.

Suspended sentences for sexual assault are surprisingly not uncommon.
The worst part for me is he apparently worked at a magazine for children.. so yeah. Good thing he's gone.

Does Japan have a Sex Offenders Registry? Otherwise a 5 year suspended sentence is pretty lenient, many places in the US have Mandatory Minimums

I also find it extremely frustrating that none of the Japanese sources reporting on this are even willing to name the person who commited the crime in question. The man was found straight up guilty, and now not only does the entire artist collective he was a part of now have their manga cancelled because of him, but he himself has no damage to his name or reputation unless he offends again, and its not like people even know who he is to avoid him if he tries to do so again.

Naming criminals is one of the worst parts about the awful American justice system.

Prison, sex offender registries, and naming criminals are all extremely bad methods of rehabilitating someone and preventing them from reoffending.

Granted, not a fan of the US penal system, and I don't know if releasing his name to cause reputational harm to his brand is the ideal solution, but ... I mean, on the other hand, he literally sexually assaulted an elementary schooler? I guess I hope the monitoring to check for "good behavior" is substantial and careful, that there's some kind of system to enforce keeping him away from young children (and this is the part that makes me wonder if some amount of involuntary isolation, or forcing him to remain in certain areas of the city or something, and off networks where he might approach kids, is needed), and some fairly involved psychological counseling.

Are we going to continue bitching about the prison system? Does anyone in here even know what Japanese prisons are like? Cause I'm a guess no.

I look up info about Chara Chara Makiart. The creators were a husband-and-wife pair. The unit has already disbanded. [/url]

Perhaps, but you make your own bed. I for one would like to know the names of rapists and murderers that might happen to live near me and my family. Also, the victims deserve to know the name of their assailant, and the right to name them to the public if they so choose.

Unless you think cars and trains don't exist, 'knowing the names of rapists and murderers that live near your family' does absolutely nothing to protect you.
