Y'know, I was sitting in class today, not really doing anything (it was the first day back, nobody was doing anything), and I started thinking...

Hypothetical situation: if you were going to introduce someone to anime who had never really seen any before (friend, family member, co-worker, etc.), and could only choose ten titles to do so with, what ten would you choose and why?

To get the ball rolling, here's what I came up with:

The first six I selected because I feel they're all rather easily accessible to a wide audience, and display a fairly good variety of anime types (in other words, if the person I'm showing them to doesn't like one, they may well like another, and would later seek out anime along a similar vein).

1. Cowboy Bebop (plus Knockin' on Heaven's Door) OR Trigun
2. Full Metal Panic! (plus Fumoffu)
3. Rurouni Kenshin (plus Tsuioku-Hen, but excluding Seishouhen)
4. Witch Hunter Robin
5. Fruits Basket
6. Tenchi Muyo!

These last four I selected because they're genuine anime classics that any newcomer to anime should make something of an effort to become familiar with. Again, I tried to go for wide audience appeal and variety here, yet at the same time aiming for genuine historical value.

7. Super Dimension Fortress Macross OR Mobile Suit Gundam (0079)
8. Ranma ½
9. Neon Genesis Evangelion (plus End of Evangelion)
10. Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (it's Lupin and it's Miyazaki, so it gets two birds with one stone)

Anyway, that's what I'd pick to introduce someone to anime, but what about you? Keep in mind, this isn't a "what are your favourites" list, but a list of anime you think would be good to get someone hooked on the stuff.

Hey you changed it. Razz

I'd show them Otaku no Video,...oh, wait wrong direction.

Seriously:

1. Cowboy Bebop
2. Rurouni Kenshin
3. Tenchi Muyo
4. Oh! My Goddess
5. Gunsmith Cats
6. Evangelion

If they didn't like any of that:

7. Naruto
8. Inuyasha
9. Akira
10. Mezzo Forte (hey, I figure I tried everything else)

Yeah, I'd mostly stick with the extremely popular shows, they are popular for a reason.

hm, I suppose this topic is slightly different. 10 for a noob you say?

1. Escaflowne TV series (Because nothing beats agood story)
2. Record of Lodoss wars. (because nothing beats a good story Laughing )
3. Beserk (Are we seeing a theme here? Lots of action decent plot)
4. El hazard (because Jinnai has the most insane laugh I ever heard of in an anime).
5. Full metal Panic (MINUS Fumoffu which was too off topic to the original theme I dug)
6. Kiddy Grade (Because Eclair and Lumiere were the best duo I've seen since OVA dirty pair.)
7. Shingetsutan Tsukihime ( I dont think its availble in the states as of yet but this is a short and schweet 12 ep mix of romance and action)
8. Lupin III (any movie or any TV ep is all good. Some of the TV series now can be seen on CN I believe)
9.GateKeepers (I thought they were like X-men on crack)
10. Argento Soma (great plot every character was well explained and the ending was way better than Evangeliion)

Extended for noobsters:
11. Outlaw star
12. Boys Be
13.Vampire hunter D (OVA and Bloodlust)

That is all enjoy.

D.W.
Cool

hmmm.... no order, but Otaku should go last....

1. Super Dimensional Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?
2. Tonari no Totoro
3. Grave of the Fireflies
4. Mononoke Hime
5. Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on Heavens Door
6. The Wings of Honneamise
7. Armitage III
8. Kaze no tani no naushikaa (Nausicaa)
9. Gunsmith Cats: Bulletproof
10. Otaku no Video

All movies or short films... No n00b has the patience to sit through a 13 or 26 episode series, not for an introduction....

If I had to pick only three, it would be

1. Grave of the Fireflies
2. Tonari no Totoro
3. Super Dimensional Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?

Just a couple. Will add more when home.

1) Spirited Away ( great for beginners to the genre. For that matter, anything by Myazaki)
2) Patlabor Movies 1 and 2
3) Macross OVA's. Especially M-Plus. If they like that then SDF-M
4) Hellsing (short but sweet)

Then on to the bigger stuff
1) Bebop (no question)
2) Kenshin
3) Ranma 1/2
4) Lodoss Wars OVA then TV

My goal was to ease them into anime. I tried to concentrate on shows/movies that are either not too japanese (face faults, bloody noses et al) since they would be asking more questions than necessary. Other shows/movies on the list are ones which I think would have some mainstream appeal.

My list:

1. Cowboy Bebop
2. Witch Hunter Robin
3. Hellsing
4. Kare Kano
5. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
6. Last Exile
7. Kiki's Delivery Service
8. Castle in the Sky
9. Azumanga Daioh
10. Crest of the Stars

I'll bust out with the hentai afterwards...

I don't think Kare Kano should be there; the expressions and the reactions of the characters might scare off the person.

It all really depends on what genre they like, but in general I would have to say:

1) Cowboy Bebop(Plus Knockin' on Heaven's Door) (A great story with amazing action-packed adventure and is sure to keep anyone interested until the end.)

2) Hellsing (I mean come on, who doesn't like vampires. This short series should really turn anyone on to wanting more anime titles similiar to this one.)

3) Mononoke Hime (Classic Miyazaki title that focuses a great deal on the action sequences. Not to mention the fact that this was one of the first anime titles that I have seen and I must say that it mezmorized me from start to finish)

4) Trigun (A little something different. Western style anime with lots of gunfights, a good plot, and cool, likeable characters.)

5) Excel Saga (Throw in the crazy yet loveable comedy title with odd characters and wild action. This ought to keep them laughing non-stop throughout the entire series.)

6) Record of Lodoss War(not COTHK) (Any Lord of the Rings fan should appreciate this OVA. It has action, fantasy/adventure, and love.)

7) Witch Hunter Robin (Great detective style , fantasy/action anime. If he/she has already seen Hellsing, drop this on them, they should appreciate this one even more than if they have seen Hellsing already. I know I did.)

8) Gundam Wing (I only need five letters: M-E-C-H-A. But the fantastic story and wide arrangement of characters doesn'y hurt either.)

9) Grave of the Fireflies (Need I say more?)

10) Neon Genesis Evangelion(Plus End of Evangelion) (Why not? GIve them the ultimate brain freeze of their life. It's a classic, it has extreme depth and symbolism, great action, loveable characters, Pen Pen, and an amazing plot. What else would you want?)

Well, I am currently helping my friend with anime. She is my test pilot Razz These are my recommendations:

1. Chobits - Who can't stand a cute robot girl who puts panties on her head?
2. Sailor Moon - Classic
3. Cowboy Bebop - It is funny and full of weapons
4. Excel Saga - The randomness is enough
5. Trigun - Kicks some major booty
6. Di Gi Charat - More randomness
7. Card Captor Sakura - Sweet, and sugar on top
8. Rouroni Kenshin - After the first few, weave into it
9. Hellsing - The gore is a change of pace
10. Lastly, Ah! My Goddess/Oh! My Goddess - Boy/Girl love with magic involved

All hypothetical, I find this a good plan for my friends Anime smile It only depends on the persons tastes. Tat is how it worked for me though. Razz

3. Rouroni Kenshin (Tokyo and Kyoto arcs)
4. Hellsing
5. Azumanga Diaoh
6. Tenchi Muyo!
7. FLCL
8. Evangelion (plus EoE, Id personally do this one last...and then give them some time to recover from the severe mental trauma Smile
