After two and a half years had gone by without hearing from this project I was hoping it would just stay trapped in development hell forever. Oh well, at least they got a Japanese director. That should at least insure that it has an authentic perspective and hopefully means the film will take place in Japan.
I'm still hoping this Hollywood adaption doesn't happen though.

My first instinct is to write this off, but MHA has so much western comic influence, I can't really do that. Could turn into a decent adaptation. The director isn't great, his filmography is spotty with some decent films and some not very good ones. I do think it will be a very interesting project to follow as, by having Sato direct it, Hollywood is showing a semblence of respect towards the source material and recognition that this is something that people actually like in America, and therefore don't want a white washed, typical Hollywood version of this, ala Dragonball: Evolution.

I'm don't. I hope they keep trying. I hope we get a ton more anime films in the next decade. One of them will be good and that'll be all that matters. One The Dark Knight is worth a hundred Green Lanterns.

I feel like there are some animes/mangas that would be obvious choices for live action movies like Psycho Pass but for some reason Long running shonen jump series seem to be getting the live action movie/tv adaption.
I don't have high hopes for this either...

I mean, the Bleach movie looked good. I don't care either way about My Hero Academia enough to have faith that they'll make a passable adaptation, but visually it already looks stunning, so this guy has the credentials to make something that can look half as good as MHA in anime or as the live action Bleach movie.

Yeah, especially since when the first season was made, the producer wanted the series to look something that you could turn into a liveaction. Then again the series has been really quiet since First Inspector and only a manga has been serialized. I wonder whether that series appealed more to Western or Eastern fans.

Western comic influence doesn't mean very much when comic book movies always do their most to try to avoid being as comic book-y as they can in terms of tone, costume design, and story telling. A Japanese director certainly a step in the right direction since Japan doesn't really seem ashamed of it's manga roots in live-action adaptions, but we'll see.

Yeah, I get that they aim to adapt their most popular properties which happen to be the long-runnning manga stories we all know, but they usually seem to do a one-off adaptation of the manga story and don't plan on follow through on that nor give them any kind of closure, so it's easy to not have high hopes. I don't have them either.

I am fine with Live Action adaptions of anime. I do find it hilarious that some people actually think that the movie will be better if a japanese director is in charge. These people forget the many bad adaptions Japan has done.

Right after learning that Sion Sono had made a movie starring Nicholas Cage (Prisoners of the Ghostland), I read this article about Shinsuke Sato, one of my favorite general filmmakers, doing an actual Hollywood movie. Go, Shinsuke! I admit I've never regularly watched the anime, but with him at the helm it'll definitely be entertaining like pretty much everything he does.
