Unfortunately, the universe really hates Ethan

The universe looked at Ethan and said “see this guy right here? I’m goanna ruin him for the next couple years..” I guess it was too much for me to ask for a Survival Horror character to have a semi-happy ending, let alone in Resident Evil.

Overall, I liked the game. Inevitably, I’m goanna compare it to RE7 and I would say I didn’t think RE8 was as nauseatingly scary. But there were parts of RE8 that absolutely terrified me. That section with the baby...Uh... Really got to me.

our favorite, perfectly normal everyman Ethan Winters

spoiler[Given the game's ending, this isn't exactly an accurate statement, and as a result got a good chuckle out of me.]

In fact, I'd even go a step further to say that every section of the game feels like a callback to a specific game in the franchise. One section will have you exploring a beautifully rendered mansion, being chased by an unkillable enemy signified by music cues. Another section will leave you in a seemingly abandoned house shrouded in pure darkness and dead silence. And yet another section will be a tough-as-nails gauntlet of enemies. At every corner, there's a new obstacle to deal with.

VILLAGE presents a natural evolution to the gameplay style established in the previous game: maintaining the claustrophobic, first-person perspective but with a snappier, adrenaline-filled sense of progression that makes you want to keep moving forward while still being terrified about what you might find behind every corner.

These two statements encapsulate why I loved my experience with VILLAGE so much. And as someone who loved RE7, the ending definitely hit me hard in the feels.

Yeah... I couldn't watch my husband play through that part. The noises as they were had my skin crawling, but I caught one quick glance at the screen and instantly freaked out. NOPE. I've grown a thicker skin for all of his games over the past ten years, but there's still things with his games that just unsettles me and I can't handle it.

Meanwhile, he's so used to all sorts of horror elements from movies and games that he's rather desensitized to all of it, but even he had to admit that, if he wasn't so used to the freak out elements, that this section would've bothered him. And that's the first time in our entire relationship that I've ever heard him say such a thing. Laughing So to get that sort of reaction out of him is certainly something in my mind!

I like the idea of trying to incorporate different aspects of a series this long running into different sections. They seemed to be going for that with RE6, and I at least thought it was a neat idea that the gameplay for the different playable characters pulled from different games.

One thing I'm seeing some debate on is whether 8 slips too far into action territory again. Considering how hard this game draws from RE4, which was itself a pretty far step in that direction compared to the prior games, I'm not too surprised. Capcom has recently said that they were hearing that 7 was too scary, which I'd be curious to know where that came from since it seemed like that game was praised as more of a return to form. I don't know, it just seems like maybe Capcom gets a lot of mixed signals on where to balance action and horror.
