Why is standard definition blu-rays a big deal in anime?

When you say Standard Definition are you saying that they are not High Definition.
If so, I don't know if they are really a big deal. In the U.S., DVD is gradually going away. So there is a need to upgrade to BD. Some titles might not be seen as profitable enough to upgrade or upscale to HD, but would be profitable enough as SD, for those fans that want to ensure their future watch ability. |

More content on a single Blu-ray Disc than on multiple DVDs, better audio & video compression compared to DVD if done right, a much better option for shows with SD sources instead of upscaling to HD since those turn out bad most of the time plus it's also better for shows with already bad upscales in Japan in some cases. I believe the trend started in Germany with both anime and western shows and it has become more of a thing in Japan in recent years but since this is about North America, I'll talk about those releases.
With Discotek, their early SDBDs (Samurai Pizza Cats, the dub-only Wizard of Oz release & early copies of Fist of the North Star) had stuttering issues that affected those with a PS3 & PS4 but since Justin Sevakis upgraded his authoring equipment, the other releases have turned out fine. I own a good amount of them including Great Mazinger (which had 56 episodes and some pilot shorts on 1 BD50) and they were fine on my consoles (PS3 & PS4 but I use my PS3 for regular BDs nowadays more than gaming). With Sentai & Maiden Japan, they had the right idea but planned & released too many of them at around the same time with more discs than necessary (presumably for lossless audio since they're DTS-HD) and without proper quality checks. Their early releases from last year (Armored Trooper VOTOMS, Blue Gale Xabungle, Human Crossing, Hataraki Man, etc) suffered from blended frames and bad compression then some of their later releases like Sakura Wars TV* & Yumeiro Patissiere* were encoded at MPEG-2 and in the case of the former, look worse than their previously-released DVDs. They recently re-released all of VOTOMS in a complete set and fixed most of the previous sets' problems except they half-assed it since Highlights from the A.T. VOTOMS (the second compilation special meant to promote the first OVA) has the same problem along with a audio mix issue which I'm not sure if it's source-related or not and then there's the Pailsen Files OVAs which have the wrong aspect ratio which wasn't that way in the botched first release. (* - Links to threads that Twitter may have hidden since a recent update so clicking those tweets should direct to those threads) With Nozomi, they haven't done much but their one SD Blu-ray of AD Police TV apparently turned out fine so those wondering about Gundam SEED & SEED Destiny's original versions should have nothing to worry about when those Ultra Editions come out. Media Blasters tried it with Strawberry Panic unadvertised but it was hardsubbed, had no chapter stops and on two BD25s (presumably for the same reason as Sentai, lossless audio since it's LPCM). As for FUNimation & Viz, neither have tried it which for the former is very unfortunate because as already mentioned, Japan has released SDBDs of their own, including stuff that FUNi has here like the rest of 90s Tenchi Muyo (each TV adaptation & spinoff), some 2000s Gonzo shows that didn't already get upscaled (except here in the case of Witchblade) and the 90s Mach GoGoGo series (the show that was DVD-only as part of FUNi's awful Speed Racer LE head) plus there are some shows that could be better off with SDBDs here that were handled terribly in HD (see all of Slayers and their bad upscales in Japan & Spain). |

When you say Standard Definition Blu-Ray are you comparing it to DVDs or the 4K Blu-Rays? If you're comparing it to DVDs, then Tars Tarkus and NJ_ provided very thorough answers. If you're comparing it to the 4K Blu-Ray, I recently noticed the pre-order for the 4K Blu-Ray Limited Edition for Weathering with You on Rightstuf has a disclaimer that the discs will only work with Ultra HD 4K Blu-Ray players with HDMI cables and 4K Ultra HD TVs. I am assuming the Standard Definition Blu-Ray would be a bigger deal than the 4K Blu-Ray because a lot of people may not have all of the necessary equipment for it. The studios are probably targeting a bigger pool of consumers with the more accessible Standard Definition Blu-Ray and to prevent returns from people who don't read the disclaimers.
